Man, and I thought I was the last one on the planet carving wood by hand (doing pistol grips). You got me whooped bro! Check out my vid if you get a chance anyway... Your work is breathtaking! I used to work on high end exotic cars (collision work). My old boss would flip seeing this. Thanks for the videos! P.S. I'd joke and tell them the chisel aint sharp, the wood is soft! A diamond bit on a dremel works well to sharpen the buggered up ones!
Phew, wow, that was just incredible! I was waiting for a router to appear and then... you pull out a chisel?!?!? "Are you nuts?" I've been looking for a way to do this on my guitars, so I may just try a chisel. I must be nuts too!
Hi Isaac, it's been more than a year since I found your videos here and you've become my main reference for guitar building, always hoping for a new video from you...
BTW I enjoyed your "guitar building" series so much (technical quality is not a big deal when facing true talent and a good karma) that I even downloaded them to my iphone and frequently find myself watching them again when going to sleep, first time I'm so much of a fan hahaha.
@frg8888 Most folks use a router, but if you go slowly you will quickly get the hang of it. I think most of that work was done with a 3/8" chisel. But a 1/4" will be needed for some of the tight spots.
Great craftmanship, thanks for your amazing videos, Iyou have inspired me to maybe have a go myself, haven't made a guitar since woodwork class at school, I made a telecaster, made evrything from scratch, but never took it up as a profession!...cheers!
Purfling cutter. Got mine from stew mac. They are made pimarily for acoustic guitars and softwood tops. I use it to score an accurate line to which I then pare
many thanks for this video....i've only made a couple instruments and use wood bindings (for the same reason...I try to make everything by hand when I can!!)

Altwolf123 5 months ago
@Altwolf123 I'm sure it would be fine. That purfling cutter is designed for acoustics.

great tutorial. Do you recommend this approach for a beginner? Also, What size chisel are you using, 14"?
