  • 'LIBERTY HAS A CERTAIN COST'. Thank you. Unfortunately too many people today who never had to fight for their freedom are so eager to give it away and aren't willing to stand for it, or their country.

  • Maybe if the Germans keep all the SS in the west to fight USA and uk . And in the east move all the way back to Germany then get the Luftwaffe to bom Russia . And keep all u boats in the west to keep ships away and then Germany may of had hope of a win .

  • @morrison2791 the luftwaffe could not bomb russia because russia had more airplanes by 1944. and the more russians advanced the further away russian factories became. even when they were in front of moscow the germans could not reach te factories in the ural.

  • This Stephen Ambrose is for some reason annoying. He exaggerates the importance of D-Day and acts like he doesnt know Germans were already fighting much harder war in the East. And an invasion of 7-8 divisions? Whats that compared to the operation Citadel or Stalingrad? Seriously. They made the invasion when Germany was already mostly defeated.

  • ashame the word freedom is used!at least the nazies weren,t hypocryts like the allies:as long as u can keep it a secret,it didn,t happen!

  • nice's movie

  • @thatamazinggeek Couldn't agree more, everyone should serve at least two years in the military to understand that and prepare for it, but the democrats and the progressives will never allow it.

  • Hitler is stupid in the way he never listened to his generals.....the wall was so much cost and supply, a mol3ile counter-army would have l3een way l3etter

  • it's so sad:(

  • The argument --- and it is one that is, not surprisingly, favored by militaristic men ON BOTH SIDES of conflicts --- that people must be willing to DIE to have freedom is obviously a faulty argument. Homo sapiens have been killing each other since BEFORE they had first settled into large communities. Peace is just respite between killing & savagery men of different ideas inflict on each other. Man is no more wise or intelligent than any other species like lion, tiger, elephant, etc.

  • @HenryDavidT you're exactly right!! we need to stop the lions, tigers and elephants from building houses, driving cars, flying planes, shooting everyone with guns... my god you are stupid.

  • An interesting " what if " would have been if Field Marshal Rommel had got his way and had more armor up close to beaches ( basicaly have been given a free hand ) what the outcome would have been. Thanks for posting this documentary; regards.

  • When it talks about Omaha we actually see the Canadians (Queen's Own Rifles or Winnipeg Rifles) landing on Juno... that's retarded.

  • @metalrocks21rapsucks The combat photographers at Omaha died. You could walk from one end of the beach to the other without stepping on sand. The first greeting the Americans had was a Browning designed machinegun

  • @DonMeaker So ? Nobody gives a shit about what Canadians done on this day even tho they landed on the second most defended beach (the only reason why Omaha was worst is because the bombers missed their targets) their first wave got annihilated but they still managed to push farther inland than any allied force and they fought Elite SS divisions while Americans faced poor quality troops. I'm not dissing the american effort but I think Canadians should credits for what they've done on this day.

  • @metalrocks21rapsucks Certainly the Canadians and Aussies were of the highest quality. In particular the Canadian members of the First Special Service Force were of the highest quality, and their training greatly helped the FSSF to reach its objectives

  • @DonMeaker Canada + USA + GB = THE team

  • @metalrocks21rapsucks Always keeping in mind that USSR lost over 20 millions. Shortly after the Normandy invasion, USSR conducted an operation called by historians "The Destruction of Army Group Centre" Soviets were at that time behind on amphibious techniques though

  • why did the atlantic wall fail?

it didnt as a whole, but only a part of it and this was stated in the video. the atlantic wall was unbreachable in and around calais. the invasion was at a weak point yet there was still causalities, the germans fought well

  • what does the belgian mean wth söffer and bönker?

  • 'LIberty has its cost'. Damn right. We are too used to freedom in the west, and we are not as willing to defend it as we ought to be.

  • @illbetilbake That and due to brushfire wars and what I call the age of American Entitlement the people no longer support our military nor hold patriotism, they expect that they can go to work, have recreation, and enjoy their lives without having to give anything back, that it will last forever. They have no clue nor do they care for the grave sacrifices their fellow countrymen lay down for them every day. And the consumption of our government by pussies only increases that the lack of respect.

  • This was pretty good, showed what collectively lead to the destruction of the Atlantic wall.

Although i do think Mr "Why the Atlantic wall failed" is falling into the same trap as the man who built that wall.

  • Rommel's "Asparagus" sounds yummy!

  • sucks that they worked so hard and still lost

  • Considering the casualties, it didn't fail...

  • Yeah...

4500 casualties, a decisive blow to the allied forces...

Even on the beaches, when the landing troops broke through, the Germans took heavier losses then the Allied.

Even at the bloodiest Omaha, the losses of landing troops where roughly 2-2,5 times those of the Germans.

The wall had failed to do its job, even if the landing would cost the allied 200 000, if they would secure a bridgehead, they would easily supplement the losses, and the wall would fail.

  • why they are saying the atlantik wall was something evil?!?!?!

the americans, canadians and britains attacked for their own cost, the germans didnt asked for that atttack

  • Well the Germans to make warfare so thats kinda like...

  • lol, so happy the allies won

if D-Day failed the war in europe would be over for the british and americans they'd probably have to make peace or hope the soviets could defeat the germans by themselves, which is pretty scrary in it's self.

  • no they wouldnt have lost the war. We would have had a major set-back, but we would have still found a way. The problem was, was that the Nazis wanted to conquer the world with only of couple of countries worth of soldiers. By the end we had them surrounded from 3 sides, so they where pretty much just holding on for as long as they could.

  • Btw, can anyone hear what Stepen Ambrose are saying about "why" the atlantic wall was a failure?

  • I have heard his opinion on this before. Something like there was nothing to hold the Allies once they penetrated it.

  • I googled it, and found a document(partly script)

STEPHEN AMBROSE; You want to know why the Atlantic Wall failed? 'Cause of the people who went against it. That's why it failed.

I recall his name from somewhere, wonder if I read a book or two written by him, I'll have to check it out.

  • I don't like many of his books. In fact his book on D-Day was terrible.

  • @kingtiger88 Not as good and accurate as Cornelius Ryan.

  • @Plastrader

    Band of Brothers fame

  • @Plastrader dont bullshit yourself, you cant read.

  • @1973mazdarx4coupe

    WTH are you talking about?

  • The reason why D-day is so important today is that it provided (west)europe to be liberated by western forces.

Otherwise we(I'm Belgian) were probably liberated by Russian troops at a later stage, and we would have lived our lives behind the communist curtain for decades.

I owe my freedom to D-day and I went to Normandy last year to pay my respect to the fallen and visit the sites.

  • Exactly, and that would have been far worse.

However the italian campaign was unnecessary(IMHO) as every soldier dying there, both axis and allied was in vane.

    Ticonio, go away please.

  • War between USSR and nazi Germany was the real World War II in Europe.D-day was something secondary.

  • noit wasn't D-Day was very important

  • Another great series. thanks kingtiger for posting, keep em coming.
