My goodness I wish it were this easy now. Today most expenses require us to use credit... many places don't even offer 'lay-away' for example. I am one of many college students living with a negative cash flow. Rent, insurance, and utilities take up all of my income from work. So saving for say, food, is impossible (without EBT program I would starve)-- let alone text books or tuition-- and forget crazy luxuries like medicine. Ahhhh... the 1940's and 50's.
Thrift is an ageless quality.
