I feel so sorry for both the people of Borneo and their wildlife. Humans are so selfish and money hungry, they cannot see the forest for the trees, that is, palmoil tree plantations. It has to stop NOW BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. We in Sydney are trying to help by fundraising for the Orangutans, and spreading the word NOT TO BUY PALM OIL PRODUCTS. We do care, I'm so sorry for the people who keep losing their land to this horrid industry. and I agree, there are too many humans.
I am so worry about our forest, why are the ppl so selfish? They don't care about our forest, now I know why when I came back to my place, the climat was very..very bad to hot like sahara, please don't destroy our forest save the animals save the beautiful nature ,don't kill orang utan's...our forest(Borneo) is one of 3 most important forest of the world....save the world! I love my place Borneo..please don't be stupit to be selffish!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@estafel Actually, although I agree with your sentiment and the conclusion seems convincing, the population explosion is secondary to the industrial revolution. It is a outcome and consequence of the engines and fossil-hydrocarbon fuels put into service as the industrial revolution wore on.
Humans do not control their numbers humanly or effectively; there was not much need to do so, prior to the industrial revolution.
The "cause of everything" is a little deeper. But your point is well taken.
Luckily there is the global crisis, weakening demand for tropical timber and palm oil, which together cause most deforestation in Borneo. For people who want to stop this deforestation: At least stop buy tropical hardwood, even FSC, because even FSC is damaging to the tropical rainforests of Borneo. Try to look for an alternative...
The Indonesians have to repay the billions of dollars that were loaned to them by the west. This money was mostly pilfered by Suharto and his crooked mates. We , the west are responsible for this devastation and the poverty.
brazil is doing more slash and burn to grow corn than borneo could dream of. stop buying hardwood things. even plywood we get in north america that is supposed to be oak mostly comes from borneo.
Indonesia even has lost billions of dollars because of illegal logging, and fires of borneo and sumatra also have caused billions of dollars in neighboring countries.
if you leave your home long enough, it will naturally become a forest too. So for those who oppose so strongly, the best way out is to convert your house into a forest to compensate for the deforestation in Indonesia.
The truth is that all busy cities was once upon a time a forest. Your cities would not have become concrete cities if you didn't take down those trees. It is selfish to justify that you could have beautiful cities while poorer nation should remain poor forever.
deforestation can't be compensated, because tropical rainforests contain much more carbon than temperate forests, and also biodiversity.
Governments over the world, developing countries and developed countries, try to put a value on the forest, so that the forest alive has more value than raised to the ground. So that the forests doesn't has to be chopped down for wood, and agriculture
I don't understand. The newly planted palm trees should be able to compensate for the damage that was done earlier. Although i agree that deforestation has done damage, but new plants should be able to compensate in the long run.
Tropical rainforests contain much and much more vegetation than the sparsely planted oil palm plantations. If you cut the big trees, burn the rest, and plant oil palm, you emit more than you save. Because of this oil palm fuel emits indirectly more CO2 than petroleum.
You might have more neocortex than any human, but a bigger fool like you can never fool a smaller fool. Why i don't see people complaining much about deforestation for building concrete cities which have no compensation for what is being removed. This is just political propaganda trying to keep poorer nations forever poor.
That Indonesian Environment Minister is talking bs. What does he mean that "could" be the land that is allowable by the Department of Forestry? Find it out man! What do you mean "could be"? And do you mean it's not a big forest?
They can still plant oil palm in a sustainable manner. Instead of burning down new forests, they should replenish the land they used to plant oil palms in order to replant new ones.

It was ok for you in the west to use your resources, now you are fat on it you don't want the third world to do the same!! You highly educated fat cats,do you know what it's like to be poor?
Sidecrank, who are U talking to, I'm living a sustainable life as much as I can, our ancestors have destroyed forests and wildlife, my grandparents finished it by ignorance.
I'm trying to repair by giving a fair amount of money to sustainable projects of farming in third world, and forest conservation, so don't give me your fat cats things...I'm not fat, I only eat what is necessary, do you?
So give me a break and go have your unsustainable fat fish and chips meal...
Palm oil is EVERYWHERE in processed foods in our supermarkets, so it means basically that we eat the rainforests everyday, and we seat for our breakfast on chairs made on the extincted Tiger's kingdom trees.
So much for the indonesian crooks, making money because of OUR needs.
West civilisation is eating up the old world to build...A big waste. Bon appetit !!
Ok, I understand poverty is a big issue, but the Indonesian gov. is looking to tackle it in a manner that is very short sighted. That task can be carried out in alternate ways - that's where the effort should be. The long term effects of this constant pollution and damage to the ecosystem will me more devastating to ALL in the long run...
It was only one hundred years ago that Pennsylvania, USA was clear cut to make charcoal for industrial purposes. We nearly lost the American chestnut and our animal populations suffered. Hopefully they can learn from our history and save their ecology.
The mismanagement of deforestation in Indonesia has caused its neighbour Malaysia to get a bad reputation in producing palm oil where in fact Malaysian part of Borneo is stil 80% covered by jungle. So sad... Myself is from Borneo.
!! And why is so bother to see it again! you cant have enough videos or information about this issue! the climate is way under reported even in countries where media is over whelming, as if like these out-lets don't like to report bad stories or open a debate and engage the community!!
PrecisionAfrikan the problem is not biofuels it is growing crops for biofuel as opposed to using waste or crops like Hemp or switch grass or waste wood all of which require very low energy imputs compared to the energy output. The problem is gov't involment to get votes and promote one thing over another wrongly.
This is why I am weary of biofuels and am more in favor of solar, wind, geothermal, wave, etc (not so much hydroelectric though, which causes massive land loss and releases CO2 from the decaying matter in the backed up reservoir waters). In third world economies already characterized by primary commodity exports (raw materials and cash crops), planners may be tempted to grow biofuel crops for export to wealthy countries.
But this neither solves the problem of reducing green house gas emissions (biofuel still involves burning and CO2 release, not to mention the slash and burn of forestry as shown in this video), nor does it transform neo-colonial relationships in trade between the developing and developed worlds.
Furthermore, the media conditions people to snicker when Chavez or Morales express fear of biofuels reducing food production and raising food prices as corn is increasingly shifted from feeding humans to feeding cars and generators. But the reality is the pie is only so big, and inflation in the third world, especially of food prices, happens very easily, causing more hunger. So those in the West thinking they are progressive for putting ethanol in their cars should think more critically.
Are there any practical steps to be taken which allows economic development and halts deforestation? I'm sure in a country in need of development the powers that be will push for it over conservation.

So please let me understand--North America, with its world wide highest standards for environmental safety-- wants to drill, but US says no.
Meanwhile, other countries, with less standards, get to drill first. But it doesn't hurt the environment. Only we do. What hypocrisy.
