Hey Jared what camera did you start with? And when did you start getting into pro cameras, like the d7000 or even like the D700 or D300? And lastly what is a good thing to start photographing, like subjects?
This is the second video of yours i have watched this morning. So well done-- I am now ready to take the leap and really learn manual. I hope you have more of this type. Including your gran. Thanks.
i ususally go for manual when i have time for it, but sometimes the thing you are going to photograph happens so fast that you dont have time to change the settings.
My way of getting out of auto was going straight to manual. I stayed there for 2 years. You'll learn so well and you understand photography so much more. Teach yourself manual shooting and you'll get so much more out of your camera.
@RatsPal..... In some situation Shutter priority and Aperture priority can be a great benefit when time is an issue. Especially when taking pics of high energy kids.
Thank you so much Jared. This tutorial helped me a lot... I hope you'll make some more videos around that topic. My problem is that when I take photos I don't have much time to set manual settings, so it ends up that I use auto much more often :\
i actually never use auto before... i just use manual... easy.. dark.. low app,low shutter speed.. too bright.. do the opposite.... rarely tweak ISO unless necessary..
Froknow, no homo, I love you man. I use a mid-range camera (sony alpha 55)and was so scared to get out of shooting in auto mode. I saw this tut and started playing around with manual mode, now I feel more confident and can really TWEAK the shutter speeds to get better colors than auto. Thanks for all you do man.
I thought in manual you want to shoot in ISO 100 whenever you can as you get a much better quality image? Sometimes that's not always possible, but there's a lot of light in that room already, and you used a pretty high iso.....was there a specific reason you used such a high iso? Otherwise, good starter guide for getting out of auto,
@JaredPolin yeah, but grain and noise are not necessairily the same thing right? that would be awesome to use a 3200 iso with lots of grains but no noisy at all
@mrnicekevin It has the same effect but it looks nothing like the same. Grain is grain. Noise is noise and looks waay worse when you use a higher value. Noise destroys the image quality, Not the resolution, but the quality.
@egornest when viewing your photographs through the camera, press the arrow key (up) and your metadata for each photo should come up, telling you your f stop, shutter speed, iso etc
I LOVE how you find object your grandmother, perfect to demonstrate ! :) I didnt buy this camera yet but i will in jun,or maybe some other im not shure yet.Anyway i didnt before used proffesional cameras and i woud like to discous with you about everythink.I dont know anythink so.. i will register leater on your forum so maybe you can help me :)
Jard, this tutorial totally put it all in perspective for me. Awesome way to approach manual mode! Just signed up to the forums. Now how about sending me one of those Black Rapids? ;)
Thank you for posting his video Jared, I just bought a D3100 kit & 35mm 1.8 and I’m very happy with the D3100 system. After seeing your video, I’ve been using the Guide Mode as a starting point, then switch to Manual Mode and adjust the settings like iso, exp, and ss to my liking. I’ve learn a lot so far using this method. I enjoy your videos very much, keep up the great work.
You don't even have to take a shot just press the shutter button half way and remember the settings in auto then just play with the settings in manual- :D
Jared or anyone for portraits do you recommend choosing a single focus point on the camera to make sure it gets the eyes? Because on my 550D on multiple focus points it hardly ever gets the eyes and they are slightly out of focus. thanks
Would the settings still give you the same results if its not a DSLR camera? My digital camera has manual settings (ISO,f-stop, Shutter Speed) that I can change but will I notice as much of a difference when changing the settings on a DIgital camera as I would with a DSLR?
LoL you are like me, when I need a subject... I can always find an elder to model for me to do some camera testing. If only I have fashion model to practice shooting.
Hey Jared, I am thinking about getting a new lens. I was looking at the canon 135mm f2. The thing is i'm on a cropped sensor. Do you think that the focal length is too long? What would you recommend? I dont want to spend too much.
i would say for people just starting out and there in auto to move up to aperture value and time value modes first to build there confidence someone who shoots auto obviously doesn't have a clue so jumping straight into full manual is a wrong move in my opinion
@aimanazlan90 with each one stop, the amount of light becomes double of half. for example, going from 1 second to 2 seconds of exposure doubles the amount of light hitting the sensor, so our photo will be more luminous. by multiplying the number by 2, you will go one stop up or down. for example from 1/30 (one thirtieth of a second) to 1/15 is one stop (30/2=15 ===> double the light) and again from 1/30 to 1/60 is again one stop (30*2=60 ===> half the light). so from 1/15 to 1/60 is two stops.
I was painting a room today, and I couldn't stop thinking about the possibility of a parody that would be interesting. Brace yourself; Frodo Knows Photo. I think you will understand.
Good video. I have wanted to do one like this for a while. I did a couple not as good but the same concept. Nice job Jared. Great for beginners and even some others. Have a great night/day.
@atyl1972 Those white spots are probably little bits of dust floating around in their house. You won't see dust at f/2.8, or even f/4 unless it's really bad.
@SMSBJM1981 well thanks for sticking around for the real deal photo tips. I do like mixing in some of the other stuff but I like to get a lot of good info out there for you.
Huh? 1/20 to 1/80 is two full stops less exposure. A one stop (or step) difference is always accomplished by a doubling or halving the amount of light. You increased your aperture by one stop when you went from f/4 to f/2.8, but *decreased* your shutter by two stops (1/20 --> 1/40 and 1/40 --> 1/80). That's probably why that shot went darker.
Jared, i would like to thank you very much, ,,,, i wanted to start shooting RAW but never really know how to get started and was getting frustrated about it,,, but your method is genius,, i wonder why other people have never come up with this advice before,,, they tell you to shoot RAW but offer no ways of how to learn to do it...... i really appreciate all you energy and hard work and will be ordering something from you web site just so you get some benefit out of all you do for us rookies
One question, when you are using a zoom lense and have the aperture wide open (say 2.8 for the lense you used in this video), then you zoom in the aperature also changes. When you zoom in do you usually also make other changes to compensate for the change in aperature? (i.e. change your shutter speed or iso to comensate) Thanks!
I just learned how to get out of auto mode and shoot in manual. I'm a beginning major of photojournalism and it has changed my world in photography. It was hard to learn at first but I went and did some concert photography and everything just clicked then. Manual gives you the opportunity to control your photos, not the camera control you. I am beyond glad to have learned this!
Thank you for the video helping others get into the wonderful world of manual ;)
@BLiSSFULxFiLLY When you like manual, think about buying a film camera in some time. It teaches you to think before each picture, as there are only 36 shots or less. And you even need to think before loading the camera: is the film good for people or objects, for night or day.
I really like these videos. It's a long process, but there is much more fun in photography when you're in control and know what you're doing. It's really cool what Fro is doing to get people forward one step at a time.
Great video, anyone buying a DSLR should know at some point if not immediately they need to break the habit of shooting in Auto., for the exact reasons that you have mentioned.
Very nice house.....Don't know if I could live with the pink, but Grandma Lil overrules everybody! lol
That lens is sooo pretty! I just have my d3000's kit lens right now, and it's nice, but I was trying to take pictures of the super moon out on the beach the other night, and as expected, they weren't as good as I wanted them to be. If only I could get a job :P Oh well, I'll learn to make this one work. Your videos are always soo helpful for me as a 14 year old getting started in photography :) Thanks!
Nice tutorial for beginners going to manual, thanks very much, I hope I was watching your videos 3 years ago when I first bought my DSLR, anyways I would like to note that everything is manual except focus keep it auto, because some think that manual include manual focus and start training to shoot manual and end up shooting non-focused images. They don't put sonic motors in expensive lenses to use it while in manual focus, and when using autofocus it is easier and it will be sharp. :D
I never shot in auto always full manual i wanted to see that improvement in my pics as i learned about aperture, better glass etc, im seeing the improvement and it's more rewarding when you get that great shot that it was all you and not the camera.
i might be wrong, but I've always thought that 1 stop increment for aperture speed (i.e. f4 -> f2.8) can be "balanced out" by increasing the shutter speed by 2 times (i.e. 1/20s -> 1/40s) instead of 4x it?(1/20 -> 1/80s)?

You keep saying "one stop" or "two stops" a lot. What does it mean?
aimanazlan90 11 months ago
@aimanazlan90 with each one stop, the amount of light becomes double of half. for example, going from 1 second to 2 seconds of exposure doubles the amount of light hitting the sensor, so our photo will be more luminous. by multiplying the number by 2, you will go one stop up or down. for example from 1/30 (one thirtieth of a second) to 1/15 is one stop (30/2=15 ===> double the light) and again from 1/30 to 1/60 is again one stop (30*2=60 ===> half the light). so from 1/15 to 1/60 is two stops.

Hey Jared!

Your videos are always soo helpful for me as a 14 year old getting started in photography :) Thanks!

the white specks in the picture was floating dust right?
vapors67 11 months ago
@vapors67
Yes. Dust won't show up at 2.8. :) Unless it freakin' muddy inside. :P Also you can se the dust-position changes from each shot. :)

HKMoo 11 months ago
@HKMoo yes, it is.
