Nope. These are the earlier Oak's: "Little" Willie Wynn, William Lee Golden, Smitty Gatlin, Herman Harper and Tommy Fairchild. The lineup that did Elvira is the current line up of Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen, William Lee Golden (the same as in the clip), and Richard Sterban. This has been the current line up since Joe joined the group in 1973. William Lee Golden joined in 1965, Duane Allen in 1966, Richard Sterban in 1972, and Joe in 1973.
My answer to jsstephenson was - yes this is the same group, i.e., Oak Ridge Boys, previously known as the Oak Ridge Quartet that was derived from Wally Fowler's group - the Georgia Clodhoppers. I also stated that the only member on this video that was part of the group that recorded Elvira was William Lee Golden. Sorry for the confusion on the way the answer was stated.
@adkinsda actually the group called the oakridge boys started many years ago.The Oak Ridge Boys is a country and gospel group that is based in the United States. The men singing now were not the orignal group as it started in the 1940's and these guys are not that old. Willie Fowler Lon "Deacon" Freeman, Curly Kinsey, and Johnny New were the original group.
I'm not disagreeing with you. My point was that there is a continuum that started with the Georgia Clodhoppers to Oak Ridge Quartet to Oak Ridge Boys.
I envy you who have followed them since way back then. I can only go back to 1972 when my mom and sister dragged me to a gospel concert where I saw Joe singing with the Keystone Quartet. Richard had just recently left the Keystones for the Oaks at the time. I didn't even know who the Oak Ridge Boys were until I saw them a few years later on TV and recognized Joe from the Keystones. Been an Oaks fan ever since. Yes, William Lee was the looker. Long or short hair, he's a beautiful soul.
@maryanne151 Last summer, he stood around and visited with the fans for at least 30 minutes after the show. It was a warm, muggy night. He is a really nice man.
I always knew WAYYY back when I first saw them live in 1979 that underneath that goofy beard there lived a handome man! I was still in high school, but my girlish instints told me so, lol! My friends thought WHAT THE HECK, but I could see it!! Yay, I win! (Even tho it is 30 years later lololololol! Nyah, NYah girl chums - teasing)
yeah,you win,i saw him in Winston Salem,N.C. in late 60's very early 70's,Him Duane Allen,Willie Wind,& Richard Sterban..2day the 27th is my b'day..46 2day..
Happy Birthday Toonful!! Now that I rethink this I am trying to remember if Bill HAD his long beard back in '79. I believe he did but that was soo long ago. I agree with sambuckram tho, I kinda wonder what would make someone so handsome cover his face, but he obviously loves the style and feels comfortable. Doesn't really matter to me as long as he has good grooming practices lol!, Did you know he is 70 now? NO WAY I say.
THANK YOU SO MUCH,can u tell me when i quit counting'em? lol,...i heard Bill tell Ralph Emery last year,on RFD-TV,that he lost his razor in 1982..i showed this to mom,she said he was the best looking fellow in"at the time"Gospel music, may God bless you & yours..till He calls our name.
Makes you wonder what's going on in someone's head when they're this good , good, good looking and they choose to turn themselves into someone who looks "strange" At least it hasn't affected his voice.
@terrillwhite78 that's a matter of opinion! I, as a rule, do NOT like long hair & long beards on men, BUT, William Lee Golden is different, for some reason! I'm 60 yrs old, and I think William Lee is the BEST looking one of the group...long hair, beard & ALL! He just seems to wear it better!
Amazing!!! Praise God!!!

Probly my first concert, was when I was about 9 or 10 (was born in '71) Elvira had came out & T.G. Shepherd had
open for them. They woudl come up to the stage fromt he back & Bill walked past me. Anyway, he had just started letting his beard grow then.
