the union demands over the generations incrementally made doing business in the U.S. less profitable. Especially the legacy liability (retirement). Retirement began when the worker spent 25 to 30 years on the job. So if a worker started at 18 years old he could retire at 48. Thats not old. Most of these retirees went out and got another job like home depot. On top of that they live longer so the number of retirees end up greater than the actual workers. Thats what happened to GM.
ASK ROSS PEROT.. "Because of Nafta and GATT thee will be a Giant sucking sound of Jonbs out of America". You can thank WALL STREET AND CORPORATE GREED for moving our jobs overseas. Not unions.
@hammocktime2002 Unions? It was far more than the unions that brought an end to the industry of America. How about all those patriotic Americans waving their Chinese made American flags on Sept. 11th that bought foriegn junk. How about corporate greed, how about government regulations, and other bad Federal domestic and foreign policy? Have unions caused all the jobs to leave this country since 1990? No, it's the average faux patriot that buys foriegn junk n votes for big corp politicians!
stupid fucking casinos .. they have to let off hundreds of people n close down schools but they wanna put in a casino .... gooood ole bethlehem will never change
I'm an Architecture student at Penn State and we're actually doing a project as part of the re-development to build an "experimental theater" somewhere beside the blast furnace. Granted this is just a bullshit design problem we're not actually building anything in reality but it's still pretty cool to be looking at a site like this.
I guess it was part of the efforts to revitalize the area, there was an ice rink/center built on the old grounds. I use to figure skate there and it was something else to see what's left of the plant and to watch them tearing parts of it down :(
The old ore pits with the crane bridges are going to be converted to money pits or bins if you will. The existing unit the minsi trail bridge will be retrofitted but the former sister crane was not deemed structurally stable to hold up to the corporate necessities of "Sands Casino International".
The "Steel" will always be a part of Bethlehem. But to preserve any part of it at all there had to be a huge influx of capitol that only a group like The Las Vegas Sands could provide. The casino and entertainment center will be awesome.
Nice video My grand father worked at Empire steel in Reading PA. and he said that it is a sad thing what has happend to this contrey that we have left this happend.
