this seems like a good show for america to adopt. there is no such thing as an actual "native american" (even the indians came from asia, just a long, long time before the europeans), and the vast majority of people who came to america came to escape something, so everyone would have some kind of conflict or historically significant event in their ancestory.
anyway, loved this! i know what he feels like, with the conflicting feelings. i have ancestors on both the union and confederate armies
This story is (was) so sad, you never know about someone else's life until you hear their story. That's why I use to ask my grandmother a million to one questions. Love the history.
I feel so bad at how disappointed David must have felt learning that he had sectarian ancestors :( and that he learned it whilst it was being filmed for a television show could not have made it any easier :(
@mirandasblog We here in Derry were inspired to take action against our own injustice by the civil rights movement in America, especially through the speaches of Dr Martin Luther King. Its sad that this place has become such a racist shithole since.
I learned more from this show than I did in my History classes. The personal, intimate points of view make it more real. And that David Tennant was my guide made it all the better. Thanks for sharing David!
That was pretty wrenching, both the footage and hearing about Bloody Sunday from someone who was there. I'm so glad that the inquiry has concluded now- with the right decision, in my view. I'm also glad that this history is getting told in this show, so more people can hear it.
And God bless Derry city- I hope the European capital of culture thing is actually helpful!
I love that even if a part of David's family was involved in sectarianism, another branch chose to believe in a more peaceful ideal. The fact that the two opposites could be sharing the same blood and living in the same place during similarly violent times gives some hope for a better future. It shows that picking a side really comes from your own decisions. Also that people who 'are' enemies could be having much more in common with each other than with their current friends.
I am sorely tempted to travel up to Derry right now just to see if I could find his relatives and possibly convince them that arranged marriages are the way to go... and then casually mention that both David and I are single... :P (It's thoughts like these that are the reason for said singleness, methinks)
@xPrincessKx Hahaha I completely understand your motivation, don't worry! But unfortunately David's not single; he's still with Georgia Moffett. :( Bummer!
this was really very interesting. Both to hear about the history of Northern Ireland and of his personal family history. David seems so sweet and kind. Really wish I could meet him someday.
@roose85723 the Troubles have mostly passed now. As you saw, the children and young adults care little about each other's standings, but occasionally you hear of an undetinated bomb near the border. All of the murals in Belfast remain simply to remind the people of those terrible times.
Pretty freaky... I mean its like a life long dream to talk to him................. I was shaking... I was like 100m away from him... but it was scary.....
Just noticed something random. Do the Scottish tend to say, "Right?," a lot while Irish say, "You know?,"? As I said, random thoughts...

@Jaspirita Definitely, my brother just got back from Ireland and he really has picked up on that.

Those images remind me of the Mexico City Masacre 1968 where hundreds of students were killed.

That was fantastic! I'm so so glad I watched this!
I can't believe how much I've learned and how close to the doctor David really is and how amazing it is to see the past in the eyes of one family...
I'm actually amazed!

I don't honestly think he had to do that much acting while playing the Doctor. His personality is just like the Doctor's.

I'm very surprised at how much this reminds me of the Black civil-rights movement here in the USA. Very sad stuff.

The Sectarian violence video at the beginning looks alot like black civil rights down south here in America. It was almost the same time frame too...
