I've always liked Gwyneth Jones. Her voice is truly operatic. In the opera house, cushioned by the orchestra, it loses that seeming harshness or "wobble". Opera wasn't written for youtube.
what a thrilling performance! -- it's easy to criticize every soprano on youtube -- but will any of us ever hear this aria performed so well in person? I heard Price sing this area in Boston (when she was in her prime) -- while the singing was admirable, areaiyzizeu u ;s
I applaude her for being able to sing like that with such a power, wobble and hysteria, but its nothing more than horrible and tasteless and not very interesting for others than fetishist...sorry. I love her in The Ring , Brünhilde, Boulez though - thats another story. Strauss is my favorite and this piece is very beautiful, but she doesnt give us the music, she sings it to herself!
I have heard La Jones many many times live and have to say that she has been an absolute crazy soprano with attitude for drama and power- sometimes for my taste to much crashy and not very supported on the air - this is why she lost her WONDERFUL GREAT QUALITYS from her beginning time (Verdi and Puccini) she married an man who is an WAGNERFETISHIST and Operaenthusiast....... I dont like this interpretation... Excuse Gwyneth....
Almost all wobbles are the result of pushing too much air through.. the voice, if you notice, most performers wobble either in the middle or on top, usually not both... In any case wobbles come from any voice trying to be bigger than god gave em.
I think I'm more exhausted than her at the end of the song! You can listen to her effort... don't like comparisons but take a look at Mrs. Price after listening to this version
There's just something about Gwyneth Jones' voice that I don't think I can ever really like. Her voice is really unflexible, it's like a glacier navigating a slalom course. And that really makes her wobble even more prominent. But she does do a more difficult ending at 4:54 that I hadn't heard before.
Well, if you consider the size of the instrument, it's not too surprising that she's not as agile as a smaller voice would be, and it's not so surprising that sometimes she had a little wobble...more often than not she didn't.
I love Voigt, but now i start to realize that she's definitely not the ultimate straussian and wagnerian. What a voices i couldn't heard for to have been born in the 80's :(

I really like this interpretation. I think she has the power and range to pull it off. Can anyone tell me the exact recording it's from?

What in the world happened from 4:30 to the end? This was not good at a;ll

@mtbrown75
4:30? It's called a foreshadowing of things to come. The High D flat went flat and it was all down hill from there.

a little wobble? Lord its almost on every note in the middle, upper middle and top.
And I am fond of Jones. I prefer Price.. NO wobble.

Very glamorous performance. Gleaming high C sharp in the final bit that is fully integrated into the voice. Impressive!
