the arc force should float it out anyway. maybee alaskan oil pipeline jobs require certain welding prcedures but for all practical everyday purposes its preferance. i recently had a woodstove that wieghed 3000lbs and change. had to pick it up so i cut a chainlink in half[3/4 inx4in] and welded the pieces to the side of the stove, downhill w 6011 100 amps and when it was raised and moved by a fork, not nicely iether, the pieces of chain link bent and twisted.the welds were fine.single pass too!
its nice to see some different techniques. in college i was mostly taught to weld in a triangle formation (point ponting up) for upill, and same for downhill, (point pointing down) and flick it if its too hot.
why did you hot pass so cold. even on 2 and 3 inch i run about 120 to 130 amps to hot pass. also why didnt you use a step pattern. im just being curious not critzing so any one who says i need to learn to weld can bite me cause i aint flunked and x-ray.

I' not sure that you know what are you doing - honestly. Did you made some NDT for this weld? Lack of fusion in the left side of the joint, two-three nice pores in the middle of the weld length? :) And why, the hell, with 6010?
I've been pipe welding for 35 years and welded up hill the whole time. It looks like your doing down hill stringers, any time I went and re-certified on a new job they always instructed me to do all up hill welding no down hill stringers they would throw you off a union job for that.
@jedediahbc you must weld for conoco philips cause their test is LH stringer hotpass and cap for pipe any ways their structural test is 8" both in the 6g
hey micheal was size land was used i hear that when u run the root just to have the amps set hot enough so were it will weld but not get stuck is that all ways r depending on pipe size an answer asap would be appreciated thank you if any one else can give some insight ive been asking around on here thanks guys
On gas line 6010 downhill is required in most places on the other hand pipe welds in the maint. and chemical industry are uphill 6010 root 7018 fill and cap I have worked both types welding a gas line up hill will get you out the gate quick and downhill a steam line will get you out the gate quick for home welds uphill is safer but harder with a lower risk of trapped slag sorry to say two different schools and both are right
@TheJimineycricket dude really it depends on preference, like almost everything in welding. there's not a ONE way to do things, there's multiple way to get the product, and if you are such a pro to give advice, why are you on a beginner's video. I'm here, because I just started stick welding, but have been around it my entire life, and have learned a thing or two, especially that opinion and preference, are some of the biggest factors.
@youlosesucka420 it depends on preference if you want to be a junk yard welder. Your never going to see this in the field, TheJimineycricket and others know what their talking about. Downhill is fast and easy and produces a shit weld, and is STRICTLY FORBIDEN in my union and I imagine every other local in the UA in the US and Canada. You'll get brought up on charges and have to go before the board. This isn't basic learning, it's hack shit.
@youlosesucka420 true!! soooo true! I agree with you that about 70% of the industry is based on "school of thought" or "preference" however, I feel that the thing that people who are stil really green struggle with is identifying the things that everybody understands to be the same, and the things that are based on preference. there are some factors that are open ended, and some that are written in stone.
@TheJimineycricket depending on how the camara was positioned you dont know weather its uphill or downhill. the camara might be facing donwards and this might like be a flat weld on top of the pipe....
@jedediahbc are u sure cus @ 33 seconds he slide the plate like if its laying down flat on a table. and i down welded before just messing around to see if it looks better like they say and i remember the weld was running faster than that????
@totallysick88able hey what size is your landing and gap when you running it up and u gap all pipe sizes the same land and all just learning and want learn some good techniques thanks
Give the guy a break. He didn't say it was going to pass x-ray. I think he is just giving the basics for people who aren't welders but are interested in how it's done.
Your stick is all over the place! Looks like you've been smoking weed before you made this video! If you sat a test for a pipeline job I think they would hit you over the head with a ball peen hammer lol......!
Why the hell are you trying to teach peoople how weld? #1 NO contractor is going to hire if you take a test and start downhilling. your going to get laughed out of the shop.#2 any welder knows that you dont downhill anything...all your doing is making a dirty weld. which will not pass a bend test or x ray. You will get laughed out of the shop because you aobviously dont know hat the hell you are doing. You could teach the basics... like how NOT to weld< and how to put a rod in the stinger.
@jofus465231 maybe you should do more research before you post.......... pipeline welding is down hand and it passes xray infact i seen 120 down hand welds pass xray yesterday and before the job started all the welders did a job test and the test welds were all downhand and i never noticed anyone laughing at them
@lochart12 your absolutly correct, the pipeliners weld downhill & pass x-ray. as far as being laughed at there the ones laughing, all the way to the bank!!
Mdtread why u are u so lazy-chip ur slag! Anyone can run downhill and this guy still manages to screw it up. If u dont understand pipe why are u teaching it? Then u rush the puddle when its not needed? Pressure pipe it IS welded uphill. So why are u telling people you'll get fired for running uphill? That is a lie!! Post a video without you burning thru and cutting the camera before u remove the slag. You know your welds look like shit.
Welders Lens-Mdtread is a SCAM and LIAR. My buddy (Jeff) made the MISTAKE of buying dvd's from this guy. w/o knowing the difference of good or bad pipe weld processes These are BAD!!! without a doubt.
1st thing Jeff found out is there is NO REFUNDS!! Everyone else has some kind of refund policy.
2nd Mtread is not working as a pipe welder- reason is his welds could not pass any xrays.Go back to school and stop SCAMMING people out of money who dont know better.
vertical runs should start at the bottom, working from top to bottom doesnt give as much penitration, i doubt this would pass a bend test, and you will have alot of slag trap.
hey dont give up look for a 4 - 7 welding course (basic) that will help u alot its easy when u have a guy going over it next to you showing you helps alot but never give up only if u reallly realllly suck if ur from the UK i can give u sum website u should try
It is probably less than 3/32. I have some metal banding material I use. I doubled a piece of it and tacked it together. The piece is probably 14 inches long by about 1 1/4" wide.
The gap is smaller than 3/32. In this video I was using a 1/8" rod. You could still use the same gap with a 5/32 rod if you crank up your heat or open the gap slightly and lower the amps. The amps on this video was about 90 to 95 on the root and then I came down on the hot pass and cap
@mdtread i would rather do up hill because it ties in better and ill tell them its a saftey issue i would raither do a job right insted of cause several probloms

Just out of curiosity, what size of rod are you using here? I don't think i caught that... I work for a company that installs steam boilers and all of our piping over 2" has to be welded. Most of the time we use 6010 rods at 5/64" or 3/32". Amperage of course depends on the size and thickness of the pipe as well. Once again, just curious...
well welding downhill shudnt be done really unless your doing cabinet work where you want to keep the heat off the metal as much as possible but when your doing a weld like this it should really bu up. and the reason it seams easier with having your amps higher is beceause it is eaasier try practising on thin stuff with low amps then the thick stuff comes easy my work mate is 62 and he learned stick on 1.6mm and hes brilliant. just give it a shot
