This woman was a phenomenal talent and will be missed by millions. I was a fan of much of her music. A beautiful woman who unfortunately and tragically for her, her family, and fans, got caught up with the wrong person/people in her life. She sang without effort when performing Star Spangled Banner with a beautiful glow to her. It was heartbreaking to see her fall from grace as she had vocally and physically. @aoibhealfae thats true yet smoking crack or smoking anything can do terrible damage over time and you can hear the damage as she sings.... having said that the singer 'Eddie Vedder' from Pearl Jam smokes cigarettes and although his style is more ruff than Houston's 20 years on he can still sing with power and hit the same notes almost as clear as he did on Pearl Jam's first album. Also some people like myself are more sensitive to vocal damage from smoking substances.

Muscles, even vocal cords, can be atrophied and scarred. @aoibhealfae thats true yet smoking crack or smoking anything can do terrible damage over time and you can hear the damage as she sings.... having said that the singer 'Eddie Vedder' from Pearl Jam smokes cigarettes and although his style is more ruff than Houston's 20 years on he can still sing with power and hit the same notes almost as clear as he did on Pearl Jam's first album. Also some people like myself are more sensitive to vocal damage from smoking substances.

That's heartbreaking. I remember as a kid respecting her so much- thinking she was a powerful, proud woman. She came across as so confident and assured in interviews, and she looked so gorgeous too.
But in the end, she died and will probably be mostly remembered as a hardcore drug-addict. Never got the chance to turn it around and shine again.
