  • But the tar-baby, he don't say nothing....... damn.

  • I think the scenes with Prissy in Gone with the Wind are far more offensive than something like this. You can imagine how uncomfortable I sometimes felt watching GWTW, as good as the film is. I like it, but there are certain parts that I didn't think were necessary...but it was released in 1939, when segregation was still prevalent.

  • If you are a black person that has watched this show, either now or in the past, do you honestly find anything offensive about it?

  • k i love this its sooo much fun but im seeing that people are complaining its raceist and this may be because im only 14 but i dont get it! all im see is a fun hero who out wits the two villians both are dim but one is mega slow! thats no different then modern cartoons and shows! so someone please expain to me!

  • I don't understand what is so racist about this? Can someone explain it to me? It doesnt make any sense, and Splash Mountain at the Disney Theme Parks is one of the greatest rides in the history of attractions.

  • A salesman came to my house to sign me up with Humana advantage health plan. I am white an he is African American. While he was going through the sign up process I said, I know who you remind me of, Uncle Remus. He was sort of offended. I said that I did not mean to offend him but that I loved the stories and songs of Song of the South and that I had a great deal of admiration for James Baskett, the actor who played Uncle Remus. I think Song of the South is one of Disney's greatest movies.

  • I remember having a read along cassette and book about Brier Rabbit and the Tar Baby when I was a kid. I'll admit it is interesting see the movie from which it was from.

  • Whatchu talkin bout nigga? you just go be eating ur friend chicken and watermelon aight?

  • There is nothing wrong with these old cartoons there is something wrong with the stupid fuck liberals that don't like for black people to act black. I grew up with this and more and it was wonderful. Liberals need to fuck off and focus on things like actually fixing world hunger and race relations and quit worrying about a fucking cartoon.

  • James Baskett deserved that Oscar (:

  • i remember seeing this as a child. shame i cannot share this classic with my children. this movie is not racist it only tell a tale of the times. to forget one's history is to hinder the learning for our future.

  • just be thankful why don't you leave your past behind

  • THIS IS NOT A RACIST MOVIE. If you wish to view the entire movie we have the original 1946 Song of the South on DVD, with an interview of Walt Disney himself on the creation of the film. Only at ACME SALES AND BOOKS only in beautiful Savannah, Georgia.

  • I was small when I saw this at a theater. I want to see it live. Esp with new technology.

  • @piercedapparition well if u want to see it live.... go to a Disneyland or Disneyworld and ride Splash Mountain lol. I will never figure out how this is so racist that they won't sell it on vhs or dvd, but yet they make a ride based off the movie. hmmmmm

  • Phineas and Ferb sucks! I love this!!

  • Br'er Bear is gonna knock 2 heads clean off!

  • Thank you so much for this! I was born in 1992 and loved watching this when I was younger! I never realised it was released in 1946! Think I'm going to have to get out the video if it'll still work! And I actually love Uncle Remus' voice and laugh! And Brer rabbits laugh gets me everytime! Gosh I actually love this film, thank you once again! :)

  • This movie is a classic piece of Americana! Uncle Remus was not a slave in this movie, he roamed freely wherever he wanted. We have the original 1946 "Song of the South" on dvd with an interview of Walt Disney on the creation of the movie. Only at ACME sales and books in beautiful Savannah, Ga (912) 352-2203

  • Such a shame that this cartoon never got its own movie :'( Defs my fav Disney cartoon short. Come one D:< Freaking spanish parrots got 2 movies wtf

  • @Evan8787 This is a movie. =/ Get with it.

  • Aw, I love this <3 So cute. I wish they released it. They released that weird re-done version but it's just not the same!

  • my boss laughs like this fox its so so funny klmfao

  • Brer Fox's voice reminds me of Eddie Murphy lol

  • Brer Fox' voice remind me of Eddie Murphy lol

  • To all the people ranting about left wing activists and the like; Disney took it upon themselves to kill the rerelease of this film and that's the reason it isn't at your local WalMart or on Netflix.

  • br'er fox and br'er bear are a great comic duo, the fox is so funny!!

I'd hope these sequences might have a dvd release if nothing else...so beautifully animated and hilarious stuff.

  • 2 people won't howdy back.

  • it was made for kids and honestly they dont know much about racism and stuff like that. they jus love the colorful moving images. we know as adults that this is a little questionable but honestly it was years ago. i think we all should jus relax.

  • @MrDatbrownboy Questionable? Get real.

  • @DisneyGuy1946 I agree with you!! I like Brer Rabbit too!! I miss the good old days of Disney so much!!

  • I really which this was on DVD cause i love the characters/pilot and the songs and Splash Mountain is awesome ride

  • was this out beforer splash mountain was made? or vise versa

  • @mickeymouse14 - "Song of the South" was released by Disney in 1946. The first Splash Mountain at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim didn't come along until 1989, three years after the movie's last theatrical release.

  • Wheres splash mountain when I truly need it :/

  • Walt Disney's problem child shouldn't really be a problem child. The problem is made up by misguided activism that seeks to create racism out of nothing. Stereotypes are stereotypes and all peoples have them. These left wing activists want to perpetuate a stereotype - that most white people were racist in the old days.

  • i would almost accept disney making new parts and episodes to the brier patch because i love brer rabbit so much and id hate to see a story line and characters like these go to waste :'(

  • again like many ppl said before.. Not Rasist.. i love the how do ya do song and i just got back from WDW today and spash mountan has all of theese char are in the ride so when i got home ( now ) i went and HAD to google it lol XD

  • this is not racist...

  • I love Uncle Remus. I'll bet he never packed an Uzi or carried a razor in his boot.

  • Why is this movie such a sin? It is a classic Disney movie mixing live action and animation set at the turn of the 20th century. People really need to look at the garbage on tv today and the stupid music out there promoting prostitutes and killing people. There is no comparison. Thanks much for sharing this lost treasure with us.

  • @storrs19 No problem man. :)

  • @storrs19 "Tar baby" was an old racist term for a black child back in the day. I dunno, personally I can see why that would be insulting but aside from certain parts I agree with you.

  • @storrs19

I agree, the fact is there really were black people who worked as servants (not slaves) for money on plantations in the post civil war south, and many of them probably talked this way. Whats wrong with making a movie themed after those times?

  • @storrs19 I know! I've been searching everywhere for it because the darn thing has been banned. It's so ridiculous! My auntie used to have a version, but a broke long ago. :(

  • @storrs19 exactly prostitutes like hannah montana and whiny crack heads like the twins from the suitelife, television has become so superficial its terrifying! Thanks Ralphie these are the best memories

  • @storrs19 Right. You know why I think people think this is so "racist", if I may venture an opinion...people now (and maybe then too) are so afraid of being called racist that even a mild film like this that portrays animals that have "southern black" accents is automatically racist. Just the way the characters talk and act is seen as racist. People don't really want to just watch things like this for what they are, they like to pick them apart.

  • Respond to this video... And might I add I really enjoyed this movie! I wish i could find it on dvd anywhere. Bre'r Rabbit and his foes are the funniest characters!

  • @storrs19 i'm pretty sure 1946 is a little past the turn of the 20th.

and you obviously haven't heard any good Mission of Burma XD

but yeah, i'm also watching coonskin. and i have to say 'guys, it's a film about a whiteboy admitting he's not black.'

  • @storrs19 well the reason many people say it is "such a sin" was because the rabbit was referring to the plantation owners and the other animals were the slaves. The tales were stating how the slaves outsmarted the plantation owners. Uncle Remus was the person telling the children, so that he can stab at the point of how slaves were treated :| so uhm yeah that's it

  • @horuloverthenikka Except for one thing, they're not slaves in the movie but rather "Sharecroppers" yes what you said may have been true for the original stories but its implied that they're there by choice in the film, yeah still historically inaccurate for the post-civil-war-south, but it did show that Uncle Remus could leave whenever he wanted to as it shows towards the end when Johnny gets attack by the Bull. But to Me it doesn't look like the film revolves *2bcont.*

  • @horuloverthenikka *Continued* but to Me it doesn't look like the film revolves around slavery or sharecropping, but then again I have ADHD, Asperger Syndrome, Mild form of autism (I'm not stupid it just makes some things hard for Me besides as My Mother is trying to prove to Me that being disable doesn't mean the same thing as a person can't do a darn thing for themselves) so all I really see is a another Disney movie from way back with catchy songs and animated tales I really enjoy seeing.

  • I love the "How Do You Do" song. :) It can get stuck in my head. xD I would've loved to see this movie if it actually was on video in the U.S. Thanks to YouTube, I can see it anytime I want! :D Of course, I always watch the animated segments; they're the highlights of the film.

  • this is not racist u are stupid to think this is racist. it is simply a story that helps us understand slavery in a childish matter

  • I think Brer Fox has a secret... Brer Rabbit/ Brer Fox ;)

I sort of think that Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox have another, passionate story behind the scenes. Maybe it explains why Brer Fox keeps letting Brer Rabbit get away all of the time, and Brer Rabbit "tricks" him every time.

  • @PrettyVixen91 On second thought, maybe Brer Fox shags Brer Bear every now and then. Brer Bear has eyes for Brer Fox, too. I don't take my previous comment back, though ;)

  • Are any of you (Amberiella, brainiacbelle, drumwraith,MissJNMelvin, etc.) actually even reading what people are saying in their comments? No one (on this page) is saying the movie is racist!! C'mon people. Read the comments before getting all excited! Everyone loves the Uncle Remus stories and kudos to the Disney Studios for giving us a medium in which we can enjoy them.

  • When people claim that the Br'er Rabbit stories are racist, they're just showing their ignorance. These stories came out of black culture, and it is a representation of slaves (Br'er Rabbit) outsmarting the people who oppress them (Fox and Bear). This is exactly the opposite of racism. As for the speech, it's a combination of southern colloquial speech and Gullah, which is essentially the black version of cockney ( a language they came up with so that the upper class couldn't understand them)

  • Look people need to stop with all the comments about this being a racist movie. It is a classic and if you can't enjoy the video then dont click on the clip

  • so either you have to sing a greeting to everyone you walk by, the same song every time and over and over because it's such a happy friendly place, or you'll get your lights punched out. What kind of a world is that?

  • @luno44 The kind of world I want to live in!

  • hahah uncle there is smoking a pipe with a talking frog ahhaa

  • Heres what I say, bring back the cartoon characters, Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear, and Brer Fox, screw the other parts of the movie. The cartoons don't look like much harm, that's just my two cents.

  • @GeniusRKO39 thats not a bad thing haha

  • omg i alsmost died when brer rabbit went " i said HOOOOWWDDYY" XD

  • i think this is satire of the plantation tradition....

  • Splash mountain flashback o.o

  • This is supposed to be for Kids

    Why is Uncle Remus Smokin

  • @Emimi33able there wasnt anything wrong with smoking back in this day.. i dont even think they even knew it was bad for you yet back in the 50s.. everybody just did it.

  • Br'er Fox is really the best!! He's cute!

  • So they can release the Princess and the Frog which has an all black cast but they can't release this. Seriously, grow a pair Disney.

  • @TurdFurggison It wasn't Disney, it was the NAACP. Disney had released this but the NAACP put up a ruckous and they got this movie banned.

  • @TurdFurggison Actually, apparently, people were calling Disney 'racist', which they arent, so Disney made the people in Princess And The Frog black, which I dont get because isnt Mowgli and Aladdin from India, or something? :L

  • Comment removed

  • "What's the matter wit' you? I said howdy! Is you hard of hearin'? I said HOWWWWDY!!" XD

  • Br'er Fox sounds like the lady who says "Hercules! Hercules!" from "The Nutty Professor". This is funny. Disney HAS to release this on DVD in the United States sometime. This is possibly the funniest thing Disney has ever made. I just about died laughing during this scene. Racist? I don't think so.

  • Br'er Rabbit: One!...Two!...Two and a half!

    Br'er Fox: XO

  • Throw around all the proverbial hate stirring tid bits you like... This is one of the funniest movies you'll ever see! The cartoon scenes between Brer Rabbit, Fox and Bear are stupendous, and no one should have the right or ability to deny me this incredible work of art! GROW SOME BALLS DISNEY, AND RELEASE THIS AMAZING CLASSIC ON DVD!!!

  • @SheitDynamite It's not Disney's fault, the NAACP banned this movie because thye thought that it was racist. Disney had nothing to do with it.

  • THIS SCENE ALWAYS MAKES ME LAUGH!! 5:09 TO 5:18

  • Around 4:26 the bayou looked a little like the same artwork from The Jungle Book.

  • only a bad ass like uncle remus could make a square smoke pattern lol :D

  • @iloveyoutification Now Listen you!!

If you got NOTHING GOOD TO SAY...

    SHUT DOWN YOUR MOUTH!!!

  • Remember: The war was NOT about ending slavery. That was just a tactic used by uncle Abe. It was about money and power. Don't forget that the Union army segregated their troops while the Confederates did not and the the Union used these segregated troops more for cannon fodder than for tactical reasons. Rather have the black man killed than the white, I feel, was their thought.

  • i don't really find it racist i think that people portray it that way because it does remind people of how things were @ that time but as awful as it was it did happen and we need to keep in mind that this movie was made during the time that there was slavery it would be different if it was made now.

  • i want 2 know what this song is

  • I LOVE THIS SHOW SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH

  • @DisneyCrazed4Life

    its not a show

  • ANYTHING just NOT that brier patch

  • I remember seeing Song Of the South as a 9 year old.I was a little white boy but I sure remember how I loved Uncle Remus.I wish that he was my uncle.

  • wow! i was a kid last time i saw this. times have changed so much. in a country that strives to be so correct, we are still so wrong. our priorities are so twisted!

  • This movie is locked in the Disney vaults forever

  • Disney had a really bad fire a long time ago and it unfortunately burned a long with other things. :(

  • Splash mountain is the best

  • fucking ridiculous racism my arse u can find racism in anything u do i happen 2 have fond memories of watching this as a lil girl with my family its a harmless kids film not a subliminal message spewing vile hatred honestly ant just see it as a funny song in a kids film and ill be damned if i dont let my children watch it one day its just a animated childrens movie and i personally think brer rabbit is hysterical just like a old southern farmer people need 2 get a life

  • Can't you just enjoy the song all you people!!!

  • I dont see the racism, other than people injecting it into something such as this cartoon that is a part of history. It opened the eyes to people, teaching them NOT to be racist. It never amazes me how people go out of their way to twist things into something they are not and refuse to see the beauty in the movie. This was from YEARS ago and it is still a legend for many reasons.

  • How do you do?

    Fine, how are you?

I wish people sang like that to each other in real life XD

  • It'd be nice to live in a world where fights only start if you don't say hi back :P

  • this fox is making me laugh so hard. I love how he talks. so fast. this is cute.

  • @lunalovett lmfao ur right x

  • you just can't beat classic disney

  • I like the how do you do song:) it's cute

  • i said howwwwwwwdy

  • Eddie Murphy should do Br'er Fox's voice in the future. (If Disney has the guts to use him again.)

  • @operafan31 HOLY CRAP I agree it sounds like him almost too. Eddie Murphy would be right at home.

  • I see no racism in this at all. I think it's cute and hilarious. I love the "How do you do" song.

  • Gotta love Br'er Fox. He is hilarious! I about died laughing when he facepalmed and fell after Br'er Rabbit says "Two and a half"! I love Br'er Bear as well. He reminds me of Patrick Star or Big the Cat.

  • Br'er Rabbit is the coolest Disney character ever! I went to Disneyworld last week and rode Splash Mountain. When I saw the characters, I thought to myself, 'I have to find out were they come from'.

PS- I'm full black and I don't see how this is racist (It might be b/c I'm 16). I think this movie is hilarious!

  • Br'er Rabbit is an african version of Bugs Bunny.

  • @gertzadek More likely Bugs Bunny is an American version of Br'er Rabbit since Br'er Rabbit stories existed long before Bugs.

  • @Antonellamalabela Or at least they're both ethnic versions of the same character that seems to be universal.

  • How did you get this movie?!?!?!?!?! :O :D :)

  • I hate how people say this movie is racist, I LOVE this movie

  • i will never fight a black person again lol

  • i swear brer bear sounds like goofy

  • Brer Fox is sexy! I felt like saying that ;D

Song of the South is racist, but it is a wholesome film with good morals:) I watched it once a month ago.

  • @animefoxify

    I think Brer Fox is sexy,too ;D

  • @KimtheVampire Me, too. XD

  • @animefoxify I agree with you... ;) I looove HIM! He's soooo sexy... XD And i love this movie... ;)

  • @AzumiCoyote I so agree with you! I'd love to get laid by him if I was a vixen he's super delicious.

  • @skittlesareawesome07 That means...?

  • @skittlesareawesome07 lol, I would rather have Todd! X3

  • @AzumiCoyote he is cute

  • i loved the cartoon of the movie. i didnt care about the rest of the movie

  • How is this racist?

  • Awesome comment, LarryH54.

  • You know, Brer Rabbit was and still is my favorite Disney character.

Ever since I heard about the whole "racist" thing, it made my stomach turn.

But no, this film is a masterpiece, it should be on DVD and blue-ray, anyone who thinks that this film is racist, can suck it, and Brer Rabbit will always be my favorite Disney Character!

  • this totally reminded me of that "nigga moment" episode of the boondocks. Br'er rabbit is having a total nigga moment.

  • You have to be a complete fucking retard to see racism in this movie. And even fucking dumber to agree with an idiot who finds racism in this movie. Yeah, how dare a movie show whites and blacks living happy together.

  • love this film.... is there a certain message it portrays tho? or a meaning??? please any1???

  • Looks to me as if only racists see racism in this beautiful story. It is set in a time when slavery was a fact of life. Should we whitewash history to satisfy a few radicals? I don't think so. Pirates were terrorists in their time. Should we ban Treasure Island too?

  • @LarryH54 Actually it was set in time when slavery had ended a year or two earlier. This movie takes place shortly *after* the Civil War.

  • Only a racist would find this movie racist. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would find this movie very racist.

  • a tar baby is exactly what it sounds like a TAR baby not a black baby

  • I'm thinking Walt Disney had big cojones in 1946 racist redneck America daring to portray Blacks & Whites getting along with each other; especially children of rich White parents becoming best friends with Black children & Uncle Remus. What sort of crazy mixed up modern world are we living in where people are bashing Walt Disney for racism? What the hell is wrong with some of you retarded assholes? This movie helped change attitudes of white children like me all over America in the 50's/60's

  • @drumwraith I think people are upset because Disney relies on racial stereotypes in films like Mulan , Dumbo and the Frog Princess. SOTS is still about slavery and no amount of profanity will change that. I wonder if it changed the attitudes of those white children who assaulted blacks at lunch counters and during sit ins. A film can't change what parents, church and institutions create. The ideology of mainstream white supremacy. Which is the audience that Disney markets these films for.

  • Pegging the entire white race with "mainstream white supremacy" just because you've seen the 60's films about redneck whites treating blacks horribly in Birmingham is like pegging all blacks with "mainstream barbarism" because of the atrocities 'some' blacks have committed in Central and Southern Africa; or "mainstream laziness and nastiness" because of what a handful of blacks have done to the 5 Points district of Atlanta. You wouldn't know real stereotyping if it bit you on the ass

  • @drumwraith Wait, since when has people bashed Disney for racism?

  • @Midnight1711 Well, I'd say it's been going on since sometime in the late 80's, when Disney stopped showing the film in theaters, because of "perceived racial stereotypes"...and way longer than that within the general black community. I'm sorta shocked that you're not aware of the Disney bashing. If you can find an American copy of this movie...please tell me, and 50 million other Americans, who have been waiting for its release forever.

  • Watching this makes me really want to go the WDW and ride Splash Mountain! :D

And for those of you who think this is racist, get serious. :p

This is just another great Disney creation to add to the collection

  • Comment removed

  • There is nothing racist about this. I can understand how people don't like the term "tar baby" ...but it actually does mean "Being in a difficult situation" and Uncle Remus is the one who made it up. Anyone who is saying they're offended by this need to grow up.

These tales come from black people and are a part of black culture in times past. To silence this film, would be to silence a part of black culture and brilliant story telling.

  • @brainiacbelle I agree...all though the stories do have cherookee roots too..I told some of my kindergartners some Brer Rabbit Stories and they love them.

  • @brainiacbelle Uncle Remus was a fctional character created by a white man named Joel Chandler Harris. I agree that the stories are not racist but the term "tar baby" was definitely coined by a white man.

Joel Chandler Harris was a folklorist who collected this tales from slaves on a plantation in Georgia. We don't really have any stories directly from the slaves themselves, they all come through Harris. Again, I don't think they're racist but they are presented by a white man. Just sayin'.

  • @MissJNMelvin

Well yeah, but I got it from my grandmother who got this particular tale from her father, and so on.

And there ARE stories directly from slaves, it's just a great number decided not to pass them down from generation to generation. I'm just fortunate enough to be able to know them.

  • @Kukilunestar I'm well aware these stories originally came from the slaves. I just finished writing a huge research paper on the Brer Rabbit stories and I was just saying that Uncle Remus was not an actual person, that's all. And this Disney movie was based off the Joel Chandler Harris tellings. I'm not disputing anything else.

  • No, they sound Southern, and what you just wrote is idiocy of the highest order.

  • that's why people shouldn't beat others for not saying "howdy" :P

  • Presuming that is true, words don't have meaning untill you give them meaning. On the plus side the story has value with a strong moral behind it. The characters don't cast a negative image of black people, and the old man is passing on wisdome. Also, is the story saying that black babies are made of tar? Is the story saying that black babies are sticky?

  • Never heard of that

  • would you perfer the honey baby? Then people would yell sexist wouldn't they. Tar is black so only people paranoid of racism would make the connection.

  • this was uploaded on my birthday! what a nice present

  • I totally agree. This is not a racist film AT ALL!

  • The concern of Racism comes from the Portrayal of Uncle Remus's relationship with the white children. Critics say that the movie portrays the "Slave/Master" relationship too leiniently, implying that slavery wasn't that bad. However, Disney contends that the movie is set after the Civil War and the Emancipation of slaves, so they aren't protraying "Master/Slave" but Wise Old Man/Children.

Also, the character of Uncle Remus is fairly stereotypical.

  • I think the conversation of if this is racist (when it is obvious it isn't) is stupid. I wouldn't give such idiots the benefit of an answer.

  • does anyone know where i can find a plush doll of br'er rabbit? haha hes so cute

  • i saw your coment on the brer rabbit movie and you can find the plush dolls at disney world .there is a ride there and its called splash mountain and you ride threw all the scenes its real cool any way there is a gift shop there and they sell them

  • this is my fav. one!!!!

    I love the fox.... :D

  • finallly!!!!! i found the fucking song!! yes!!! ive been searching for sooo long. thanks for uploading!

  • thanks for putting this on here! i've wanted to see this ever since i went on splash mountian!

  • IT IS NOT RACIST! This movie is the best thing Disney ever made! It makes me smile every time I watch this! I so wish they would put this on DVD.

  • I dont get where the whole RASCIST thing is coming from ?? .. how is it rascist ??

  • AS a half black man myself, I've seen more racist content in Gangster Rap

  • LOL!!! Brer Bear is sooo FUNNY!!! XD

  • 6:59 GONG! LOL

  • hey, my grandma has this movie!

  • that is both enigmatic and awesome
