Virgil Donati !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Incredible-fantastic-superlative drummer , one of the best , surely one of the my favourite ( Dave Weckl and Steve Smith , too !!!!!!!!! ) . I ' ve seen Virgil Donati playing in Roma with Billy Sheehan and Tony McAlpine : simply wonderful ! A great musician ! About Dream theater session , i have my personal opinion ( we can discuss , eventually ) : Virgil Donati is too important drummer for Petrucci and Co. , his personality too big and strong for this band
Virgil Donati never stops to motivate and inspire me, I think he is the single-member-absolute-one-of-a-kind stellar class of drummers. Although I am not too much into DT, I think that Mangini is the perfect match for them. After having watched the audtion vid's of Dream Theater I found Virgils takes killer but it appears to me as if he just had fun with the guys, not really looking for a job in a Progrock-Band.
Virgil Donati easily can be called the greatest drummer of all time.This is real progressive drumming of world class.Not like the losers in dream theater were they play different note groupings and call it "different time signature".I know why there is so many fools out there because few people have the desire to educate and listen to 4-5 bands and have no idea what really monster players are out there like Planet X or Allan Holdsworth.
Like my drum teacher told me: "After seeing and hearing Virgil play you are faced with a decision. Either give up drumming all together or dedicate all your motivation and energy to try and obtain a fraction of the skill and musicianship Virgil possesses.".
@Klebourass not impossible just little harder than usual but not impossible. a good drummer from your country is george kollias and of mine it is antonio sanchez god bless all this kind of musicians wherever his nationality, and long life to the kings. lol.

Virgil is the shit. I gotta say from 2:33-2:39 and 5:26-5:30 are my fave parts. It's just something about the lil things here throws in, so dope!

A short dissertation of Virgil's playing style:
step one: play a simple-ish beat
step two: suddenly decide that youre bored and choose a new time signature to play in without alerting the rest of the band
step three: magically rejoin the rest of the band perfectly on the down beat as if nothing happened

@isaacleedrums
Well i have to say for me m-audio ie-30
is the best choice for acoustic drummers.
you have a reduce of 27db. But you´ve still
everything transparent in clear. For the
best decission i´ve ever do. and remember
i have also the ue-4 from ultimate ears.
For live drumming not a good choice:)
