  • HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!! how the fuck can this sound so fucking crisp live .these guys are the best fucking musicians HANDS DOWN .no other group can come close.

  • NASA should have placed this song on Voyager in 1977.

  • At 07:10 , Alex's classical guitar technique is amazing . Liona Boyd would be impressed !

  • Wow that solo was amazing. Tbh I don't care for some of Geddy's vocals on this version, but flawless instrumentation as always.

  • Poor Jodie foster; I really felt for her just then.

  • Amazing video. Amazing band. Amazing song. Did i miss anything?

  • they could at least have recorded in Eb or something, only a year later and he can't hit the notes; the music is great though, good video too:)

  • Thanks Dude...great work !!! and "3 guys in a bar"...hilarious...but TRU...Comic Reality !!!

  • I don't find it surprising that Rush has the third most gold or platinum albums behind the Beatles and the Rolling Stones...oh wait, yes I do. THEY SHOULD HAVE THE MOST.

  • visually and musically awesome. one of my favorite rush songs.

  • WOW!! Jodie Foster & RUSH!!

= What a strange pair, But WORKS! Just like Rush works = Perfect!

    Nice video

  • 3 Guys are in a bar.

One of them says: I have the longest arms in the world.

The other one says: I have the longest legs in the world.

The third guy says: I have the greatest musical talent.

so they decide to go to the office of the guinness book of records.

The first guy comes out and says: Yes! I do have the longest arms.

The second guy comes out and says: Great! I do have the longest legs.

The third guy comes out pretty angry and says: WHO THE FUCK IS RUSH!

  • @drummerfanmatt

I salute you, this may be the single greatest thing I have ever heard. *bows down*

  • @drummerfanmatt

This may be the single greatest thing ever said in the history of man. I salute you, fellow fan of Rush. *bows down*

  • @21stCenturyBoxProduc hehe thx man

  • @drummerfanmatt That is hands down 1 of the best things I have bothered to read. Similar me thinks as to the answer being WHO THE FUCK IS DODGE AND BRIAN??? LMAO!!!!!!

  • @superunt43 thx :)

  • best. opening. ever.

  • I bet you $10 that Cygnus X-1 formed THE EXACT DAY Ged and Alex found Neil.

  • @LegionOf3 maybe... I would like to think so.

  • @LegionOf3 you owe me $10 ... Cygnus X-1 is thought to me around 6000 light years distance. So the 'sensory evidence' from it reaching us now actually left there 6000 years ago.... much older than the members of Rush. However, I will not rule out the option that they are interstellar aliens who are far older than they claim - I base this opinion upon the hunch that mere humans cannot actually create musical masterpieces such as this! SO perhaps I owe you $10!

  • @pugcasso I guess so...So where's my $10?

  • I gave it a gaze this morning... I.E. M 29 Very NICE VIDEO!!! :)

  • wahey, pass the spliff

  • Has anyone ever seen video of the animation that Rush used during this song on the Hemispheres tour (1978 - 1979)? One of the coolest things I've ever seen in concert...been looking for that for years.

  • Cygnus x-1 is black hole,i think. With its accresion disc?

  • soo much better than the studio version. Thumbs up if you like Book I more than II

  • Looking forward to watching this, but Youtube takes forever to load videos these days.

  • Oh my! Thanks for that.

  • On my ship, the 'Rocinante'

    Wheeling through the galaxies

  • Great video!! Well done!! - I really like it...

  • 3 people got sucked into black hole head first and it affected their mental processes so they clicked the dislike button

  • it means a black hole....not seen to the human eye, an imploded star of immense power....its the dogs bollox of songs my friend , a lost art form....suffer you r and b suckers and all hail the music of the gods...............

  • @dwaffy1 defined as not wanted to be seen then.

    dismantle it.

  • Invisible, to telescopic eye,'' infinity, A star that would not die? What does that supposed mean? And why does it sound so fucking powerful? Just when i started to think this could not sound as heavy ,this song like a terror from black space swallowed pantera hole in a epic marvel of a snarling orphic trench

  • This is better than the studio version.

  • Crushing!!

  • really cool - nice mixing in scenes from contact which fits real well.

  • Weinrib, Neil and Alekovsky are the best power trio in the Yuni-verse.

  • Should appear scenes from 2001, I think it links more with the lyrics (specially taking into account Cygnus-x1 Book II)

  • Far out!

  • Beethoven should be proud.... what an epic full of powerful riffs, chord progressions, interesting sounds and changes - add to that the intriguing drum details and lyrics from Peart ... what a song - *At the end of time when all matter is compressed into a hellish node of impossible density... just before the next 'Big Bang' erupts forth a new Universe, this song will be the only thing that will be capable of escape from such gravity!* - maybe those in the next realm will find it once again!

  • BIIIG props to ya dude, great animation! youve got talent!!!

  • I am in awe that 3 of the world's best musicians can deliver such devastating power

  • Hemispheres! One of their best and most overlooked albums!

  • @kissrev1 yea it is. but this song is on A farewell to kings lol.

  • @jemmani22 forgive me for that. You can understand where I erred. I didn't listen to FTK that much, and since I loved Hemispheres, blah, blah, blah....

  • i really need to travel throght the infinite of space listening to Rush!!!

  • 11 dimensions set to RUSH.......What could be more cool than THAT??

  • You cannot go wrong with old Rush.

  • this video is amazing!!! I love it. i'm in a band that does a number of rush songs, including this one. would it be possible to get your permission to use this at our shows? ideally, i'd need an electronic file copy of the video. the idea is to play it on a screen while we're playing the song live. of course, if you want to put your name at the beginning or something, that's fine to give yourself credit. please let me know!!

  • This is just f*ckin awesome... Rush are just so unique, so incredible! Their musical proficiency, complex key- changes & time signatures are almost jazz-like in their complexity.. been a fan for over 30 years :-) Time to dig out 'A farewell to kings' for a play i think! Geddy, Neil, Alex... i love you guys!

  • Rush were the heaviest band of the 70s, no doubt.

  • @SonOfYoungwood

    not that heavy

  • Rush is just that....a rush. RAW POWER!

This video combines many forces.. enjoy humans!

  • This is a glimpse into three young men's minds. They were at their peak for this particular moment in time.. This is the second attempt at melding RUSH with the film Contact. The first vid was removed because of copywrite infringements.

  • Really nice job on the vid dude!!!!

  • SUPERCoooooooooL video and great sound; captures the true RUSH sound of that particular genre. Hope they play this as a bonus for Time Machine ...

  • I really like how you edited this. Well done!

  • i've been here many times. i love this vid

  • The sound quality of this bootleg is outstanding !!!! RUSH !!!! RUSH !!!!! RUSH !!!!! RUUUUUUSSHHHHHHHH !!!!!!

  • This song has just about anything and everything you could want. It's a total symphonic sounding bombastic feast interspersed with more silent sections creating even more contrast and power when things kick in again! It's a three-piece orchestra creating an expression along the lines of the famous Russian composers.

    In other words.... bloody cool!

  • geddys baseplaying in the beginning ftw

  • I got to see them do X-1 and Hemispheres back to back when I was in jr. high!!!!

St. Johns arena. Columbus Oh. Hemispheres Tour!!!

A night I will never forget!!!!! Seen them 14 times total since then!

  • words, music and images dance a beatiful dance that

able to sanctify the excrements of the donkey

  • Very nice job.

  • I have NEVER heard this song live... Amazing! The Bass has so much more power than the recording!

  • @narutozrasengan If you want to see this live, there's a great DVD you can buy on Mike Portnoy's website. Cygnus and the Sea Monsters. It's Mike Portnoy from Dreamtheater, Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big/Racer X) on guitar, the singer from Dangerous Toys and another guy on Bass. They play 2112, Cygnus X-1 Book 1/Book 2 and YYZ. The first 3 are just amazing.

  • One of the best!

  • oh, boy! oh, boy!! -pant!!-

  • amazing !

  • The voice over was by Terry Brown, Rush's producer.

  • this used to spook me when I was a kid.

  • The voice here sounds like 'The Borg'

  • I saw this tour,They had a screen behind them and played the intro in the dark while showing scences similair to this.

The cooliest part was when the Rocinante enters the black hole of Cygnus X-1

  • ... Cool :O

  • soi fanatico de rush y t digo deberias poner una version mas vieja de la cancion, esta suena horrible 0_0

  • Alex's guitar tone makes me want to bite nails. Pure Power....

  • You've gotta love any song that has a scary sounding narrator overdub. Did Terry do this one too?

  • Pretty sure he did. Don't quote me though.

  • What band was heavier than this in the seventies? Answer

is None, including Sabbath. This is just insane power....

  • @xyz321123

couldn't agree more, i've said this to my mates on many an occasion. every time i hear the bass at the start of this CLASSIC i'm a quivering wreck. underrated for their heaviness at this point in their career

  • @xyz321123 Errr. Black Sabbath......That's a tough call man, lol!

  • @DUDEplayer69 I agree, Alex here sounds just explosive!

  • awsome post nice work thank you

  • This is my favourite Rush song, never heard a complete live version of it before!

  • man, that was awsome right up to point when Jodi Foster popped in. Then it sucked ass really hard.

  • Wow- best recorded version of this song I have ever heard-much better than the Hammersmith Odeon recording from Different Stages. THX so much for posting. Awesome.

  • i don't think it was supposed to be a girl.

  • I think I'll give A Farewell To Kings a spin tonight!

  • @ausme10

    ..and Moving Pictures

  • Well done! Excellent video interpretation of this magnificent and prfoundly intense tale. Bravo!

  • Nice in 1981 herad first time Rush with this song!, amazing!

  • haha this is so epic, Rush is amazing

  • Cygnus.....some parts sound like some parts of some Mars Volta's song.

Sorry all i'm effin drunk and ut's friday night

  • lol if you were drunk you couldnt type like that

  • wow, kubric and rush....

  • six stars of the nothern cross, in mourning for their sisters loss, in a final flash of fury ,never more to grace the night

  • We will call you Cygnus, the god of balance you shall be.

  • Two thumbs up and five stars!

  • I'll second that and maybe add five gold stars, He He! Best band to have graced this planet.

  • Man you are right, they graced the planet. 6:15.

  • Fantastic.......love RUSH. Thanks.

  • Thanx! I never got to see Rush until 1990, so I never got to see this whole song live! I almost saw them in 1980, but my militant Ukrainian stepdad said "Noooooo"! Oh well...I was only 11...

  • Excellent work! Couldn't have done it any better myself...

  • not only do i take my hat of to you, but i bow as well fuckin well done!!!

  • that solo gave me goosebumps i love what they did with the solo, pure epicness

  • fvcking awesome job! i want a trip through a stargate now!

  • Excellent video showing the forces of the universe at work. I've never heard Rush doing his one live and I'm astonished at how well they've managed to capture those sounds that they created in the studio. I've just added it to my favourites.

  • i like this,

    it's just like megalongosta says.

  • you've made something sort of like what I always imagined listening to this.

  • This song is heavy. I cant imagine what it was like seeing it live during this period. Judging by the crowds reaction they had no idea how privilage they were to witness it...

  • Great stuff with the vid - but been a picky sod you could have done better at the end before the baby - but still fecking good to watch and i hope Rush see your tallent

  • Fuck me! Who ever you are,You are a graphics genuise! This is the best space based graphic I have ever seen! (let alone RUSH vid!)

I hummbly bow to your talent...

  • Fuck me! My old favourite band playing one of their utter classics!

  • That Bass intro is just down right funky!

  • Ooohhh, love the split signal into the (really early!) harmonizer at 6:46, & panning back/forth @ 7:20, then a doubling effect at 7:50 that was always there but increased on the guitar. This has to be a really good board mix. Thanks for posting!!

  • My father used to talk about when this song came out it would tripped him out. To have such a deep song and all the craziness in it! It's an amazing song, especially with the great video, even if only a compilation of documentaries. 5/5 for me. Tho I would have used a studio version. Not a big fan of the whistling and screaming myself

  • This is as pirdy good depiction of the first part of the two part series. i really hope you make the sequal book 2. it is in my opinion the better of the two. that would be awesome

  • Rush was never what we today consider "heavy metal", but this song easily puts most poser metal to shame. All 3 are just gettin' it done, here. I love Alex's wah wah action at 7:00.

  • if a black whole that big was coming twords us we would all be gone

  • I believe this is an under-rated Rush song. To me, it kicks ass and belongs in their "Top 10" list. Quite creative.
