HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!! how the fuck can this sound so fucking crisp live .these guys are the best fucking musicians HANDS DOWN .no other group can come close.
I don't find it surprising that Rush has the third most gold or platinum albums behind the Beatles and the Rolling Stones...oh wait, yes I do. THEY SHOULD HAVE THE MOST.
@drummerfanmatt That is hands down 1 of the best things I have bothered to read. Similar me thinks as to the answer being WHO THE FUCK IS DODGE AND BRIAN??? LMAO!!!!!!
@LegionOf3 you owe me $10 ... Cygnus X-1 is thought to me around 6000 light years distance. So the 'sensory evidence' from it reaching us now actually left there 6000 years ago.... much older than the members of Rush. However, I will not rule out the option that they are interstellar aliens who are far older than they claim - I base this opinion upon the hunch that mere humans cannot actually create musical masterpieces such as this! SO perhaps I owe you $10!
Has anyone ever seen video of the animation that Rush used during this song on the Hemispheres tour (1978 - 1979)? One of the coolest things I've ever seen in concert...been looking for that for years.
indeed, my dear,. just because the Very large Array says to Garry Busey that he needs inner cochlears doth that mean the beach hath no path buy your carrying mon ami

This is just f*ckin awesome... Rush are just so unique, so incredible! Their musical proficiency, complex key- changes & time signatures are almost jazz-like in their complexity.. been a fan for over 30 years :-) Time to dig out 'A farewell to kings' for a play i think! Geddy, Neil, Alex... i love you guys!

@narutozrasengan If you want to see this live, there's a great DVD you can buy on Mike Portnoy's website. Cygnus and the Sea Monsters. It's Mike Portnoy from Dreamtheater, Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big/Racer X) on guitar, the singer from Dangerous Toys and another guy on Bass. They play 2112, Cygnus X-1 Book 1/Book 2 and YYZ. The first 3 are just amazing.
couldn't agree more, i've said this to my mates on many an occasion. every time i hear the bass at the start of this CLASSIC i'm a quivering wreck. underrated for their heaviness at this point in their career
Wow- best recorded version of this song I have ever heard-much better than the Hammersmith Odeon recording from Different Stages. THX so much for posting. Awesome.
Thanx! I never got to see Rush until 1990, so I never got to see this whole song live! I almost saw them in 1980, but my militant Ukrainian stepdad said "Noooooo"! Oh well...I was only 11...
Excellent video showing the forces of the universe at work. I've never heard Rush doing his one live and I'm astonished at how well they've managed to capture those sounds that they created in the studio. I've just added it to my favourites.
This song is heavy. I cant imagine what it was like seeing it live during this period. Judging by the crowds reaction they had no idea how privilage they were to witness it...
Great stuff with the vid - but been a picky sod you could have done better at the end before the baby - but still fecking good to watch and i hope Rush see your tallent
Ooohhh, love the split signal into the (really early!) harmonizer at 6:46, & panning back/forth @ 7:20, then a doubling effect at 7:50 that was always there but increased on the guitar. This has to be a really good board mix. Thanks for posting!!
My father used to talk about when this song came out it would tripped him out. To have such a deep song and all the craziness in it! It's an amazing song, especially with the great video, even if only a compilation of documentaries. 5/5 for me. Tho I would have used a studio version. Not a big fan of the whistling and screaming myself
This is as pirdy good depiction of the first part of the two part series. i really hope you make the sequal book 2. it is in my opinion the better of the two. that would be awesome
Rush was never what we today consider "heavy metal", but this song easily puts most poser metal to shame. All 3 are just gettin' it done, here. I love Alex's wah wah action at 7:00.
HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!! how the fuck can this sound so fucking crisp live .these guys are the best fucking musicians HANDS DOWN .no other group can come close.

The other one says: I have the longest legs in the world.
The third guy says: I have the greatest musical talent.
so they decide to go to the office of the guinness book of records.
The first guy comes out and says: Yes! I do have the longest arms.
The second guy comes out and says: Great! I do have the longest legs.
The third guy comes out pretty angry and says: WHO THE FUCK IS RUSH!

I've just added it to my favourites.

you've made something sort of like what I always imagined listening to this.

This song is heavy. I cant imagine what it was like seeing it live during this period. Judging by the crowds reaction they had no idea how privilage they were to witness it...

I believe this is an under-rated Rush song. To me, it kicks ass and belongs in their "Top 10" list. Quite creative.
