I don't think popularity has anything to do with it. Aesop mentions spiritual aspects much more than a lot of other artists, mainstream, underground or otherwise. Sometimes he gives credit to those forces literally and sometimes he is just rapping about other things and trying to sound good. Sometimes it's subtle sometimes is obvious, and sometimes he is expressing his personal struggles, but those spiritual aspects are existent in his music.
