I took Japanese for 3 semesters in college. Then I quit for various reasons--one of which was having to learn all those kanji at once instead of spread out...

I think to be considered "proficient" I had to learn 10,000 of them?

Tired is not a "past tense" is a "past participle". Past participle works as adjectives!

The past participle is sing sang (sung) and is used in the passive voice. The song was sung by Jeremy. Many times the past particpal is the same as the past perfect. The beer was drunk by Jeremy. Jeremy is drunk. This is an adjective which is NOT using the past participle to discribe the subject. I did not get drank. Drunk in this case means wasted. Anyway tired is a past tense verb. It can be used as a past participle because it's the same. Tsukareta is past tense.
