It's difficult to argue that 'gang culture' is not 'a black thing' IMO. The influences that draw people into the gangbanger lifestyle are predominantly black-influenced. Like Starkey points out, music being a huge contributory factor. 95% of Grime artists are black yuts.
It's a shame so many young black guys are drawn into it, but the fact it they are, on a hugely disproportionate level to white kids.

Starkey's comments are important to me in at least one respect. They confirm how many racist and bigoted people are out there ready to lay the blame of society's failure at the door of this so called nihilistic aspect of black culture. I don't think black people should be surprised but terribly disappointed.

i thought David starkey was an intelligent historian for him to say this is black is absolutely shocking. this just showed that racism cases may seem to have reduced over the years it has gone undercover. someone like starkey will never employ a black person and there are many people like starkey out there. starkey needs to check on historic facts which shows that the sort of violence have been happening in UK long before black people had right in this country.

To blame black culture and indirectly black music as influencing and somehow "darkening the hearts of these peaceful white folk" is pure ignorance. Metal rock music is just as violent, maybe even more violent that rap music. What about chav's and hooliganism. He's just blamed the black culture for these actions. That really doesn't make sense.

To all those who oppose multi-culturalism, i have my middle finger in ure faces because it is multiculturalism itself that created England 1500 years ago. Jazz, which led to big-band broadway music, then to rock and roll, disco, funk, and now rap. I'm not condoning the looting but how can the state expect it's people respect the law if the police are blatantly breaking it themselves, for example shooting Mark Duggan and trying to cover it up. The said week the police beat a 16 year old black girl in Tottenham (it's on YouTube for all those none believers). I suppose that's acceptable, so long as it wasn't a white girl.
I feel that the looting is largely attributed to the government continued cuts youth services. Irrespective of colour

I like Starkey, I'm an aspiring historian myself.
But go back a couple of hundred years and people would say that he talks a simplified and 'slangy' form of English.
Language moves on and in a few hundred years it will be completely different. But as for race, i think you get people from all aspects of life and backgrounds who can be good people or bad people.
Just judge people by their deeds not their skin colour.

Speaking slang isn't black culture. Any black person that speaks slang is supposedly a gangster, I speak slang, I'm not a gangster. Many people think that being a gangster & being violent is someone trying to be black. Here the joke though, it's not just black people that are violent & gangster because I'm sure there's white & Italian gangs, amongst others that are violent and very gangster.
