  • ooh I like that ! never heard of them before but they popped up at the side of video I was watching - that is the joy of YouTube . Sharing music

  • Whilst listening to this, the story comes to life, thanks to the brilliant orchestration and singing. Its almost like watching a movie of the story! I'm addicted.

  • Such great music- I go to their gigs whenever i can - and i LOVE everything they do, Bands like Bellowhead gi

ve life fun and excitement for me!

  • We saw them yesterday in Antwerp, oh my, they are some impressive musicians, each and every one of them, tons of fun to watch. I didn't dance but it was hard not to get out of our seats.

  • jesus christ !! what a load of B******s !! either you like the song ( as i do ) or you dont, listen to it or dont !! life is simple ( as i am )

  • First point: Carthy says "you cannot ruin folk music, it's bigger than anyone!"

2nd point: John Kirkpatrick says the way to play English Folk tunes is to play them over and over again changing as you go along - and this arrangement does that exactly. So with 2 of the greats of English folk revival supporting this arrangement, I do feel that sanealladin needs to reconsider.

  • I must say, I like this song! I don't know the Martin Carthy version yet, but I will see to that! I didn't know the band 'till recently. Their song "New York Girls" is the Hot Shot at the local radio station for this week, and that's my new favorite song for now!

  • When will people realise that there's a difference between a piece of music being not to their tastes and it being bad? Just because this arrangement has other priorities than the melody (which is the simplest, easiest and most cliched element to emphasise) doesn't make it bad. The subtleties, the fact that the accompaniment evolves and is very rarely the same from line to line all make it a technically accomplished piece. Feel free to dislike it, but don't frame your opinion as fact.

  • @FaithHealer1 If you judge things this way, no piece of music, not even one by Take That, could be judged as bad, people could simply say 'it's not to your tastes', that approach leads to no great piece of music being valued. A melody can be embellished without being lost, the Chieftains demonstrate how to do this; Bellowhead simply descend into a pointless mush, that's not subtle. This tune is one of the few great melodies the English have retained, hence it should be properly looked after.

  • Love the song (Iknow the Martin Carthy version too) The dramitic arrangement adds to the atmosphere of the song without altering it. Love it!

  • God sang

  • Sorry this is bad, the Martin Carthy version is how to do it, on this version they don't establish the melody properly, it's one of the greatest of all tunes, and there are not that many in englsih folk music, also what tune they possess they swamp in sub-heavy metal arrangements that are supposed to be atmospheric and meaningful, but are just obstructive and short in the head. Good Morning People.

  • @TheSanealaddin I feel your comment here were quite derogatory and made me cry in fact you have ruined my entire week i hope you're happy with yourself, not only this but after reading the comment you posted my parrot left and threw him self down in front of the cat, (not so bad you think) but when the cat ignored him he opened its mouth climbed in and crawled down in to the cats stomach. Thanks

  • @Emizatial Bloody hell old man you are reacting, OK they start off nice and atmospheric, but then it's all pseudo-drama, melody losing, and Ozzy Osbourne type instrumentation, don't do that to such a great tune, check out the Martin carthy version, that's how to do it.

  • @TheSanealaddin There are umpteen versions of this with different melodies and treatments. I love Carthy but he's not canonical on this one.

For example Carthy' wife Norma sings one with a different equally venerable melody. And knowing Carthy, he probably messed with the melody anyway.)

Bellowhead are known for complicated "modern" arrangements; it's silly to criticize them for exactly what their style is.

  • @Yehudittx This version was taken from a Suffolk railwayman in the 19th century, the Carthy version follows the sheet music, it is technically canonical. The tune was almost lost, typical of the English. The other versions are not equal to this one, many of them wittering affairs. If an arrangement is vague and mushy, it's useless, doesn't matter whether it is modern or not. This is one of the few Englsih tunes that can compete with the great Celtic tunes, it needs preservation not destruction.

  • I want to see an animated short set to this song.

  • this is a masterpiece.. woman's revenge!! Just get those hairs on the back of the arms and neck sticking up!! love love love it!!

  • YEY, there are finally some comments!

  • Wow, i like most of their songs with a passion, but this is simply brilliant...

  • Why are there no comments?????????

  • @bigquackers1998. What can you say about genius? Any comments are likely to be fatuous & unnecessary. :D

  • @bigquackers1998 because everyone is stuck by awe
