Many of the soldiers volunteered, they went just for a limited amount of time, they got paid, fed, clothed, they could smoke weed and shag things. There are still men alive in Vietnam who started fighting at the age of 16 and finished at 50, they are not many as most of them are dead. Often, they couldn't even choose the side, malnourished with a substantial part of the family dead, you do not see them in veteran nuthouses
As I watch these videos I see the young men that fought that war....so many 18 years to early twenties....and I was one of them. We grew up fast and became a very tight knit group out in the field. The same is true for our troops fighting today....young but doing what their country has asked of them. I respect.....I applaud.....I appreciate all they are doing today.

The US soldiers were doing as instructed but we were so young scared and naive. Average age was probably not even 19. I had hoped when I left the service that this country had learned it's lesson. the mother of my girlfriend is vietnamese, the fear is still visable her eye's everytime a war is on the tv she cryes, i often hear her say she could better die there during the war as a child then living everyday with this pain and fear for the rest of her life, she almost never sleeps at night, she just cant because of the nightmare's. this war is long gone but the people who lived in the war its far from gone. i wish people would think about that before starting it.

Are side was given strict orders to stay in Vietnam but the thing is the HQ and planning stations for North Vietnam were in loas I think. We had no chance to fight in it because we could not even fire on loas.

The VC and NVA were the ones in pain. Prior to the annoucement by Nixon of the withdrawal of US troops, most GIs believed they were fighting against communism. (they were). After the announcement morale declined and nobody wanted to die for a lost cause. Would you.

@elsocialistadeargent If I remember history correctly it was the communists in the north who were supplieing weapons to the VC in the south, and later when they were no longer effective sent their own troops into South Vietnam to wage war. My uncle was a door gunner on a Huey. He got three purple hearts, it was a rough job. They were sent off with 500 lbs of ammo each time and were ordered not to bring any back. He expended a lot of ammunition and burnt out many a barrel on his M60 sawing away at the random jungle, sometimes they'd kick the ammo out the side. What a crazy war. The politicians turned it into a pointless war and the poor guys that sacrificed and killed had to pay for it in blood and years later to this day.

Many of the soldiers volunteered, they went just for a limited amount of time, they got paid, fed, clothed, they could smoke weed and shag things. There are still men alive in Vietnam who started fighting at the age of 16 and finished at 50, they are not many as most of them are dead. Often, they couldn't even choose the side, malnourished with a substantial part of the family dead, you do not see them in veteran nuthouses

As I watch these videos I see the young men that fought that war....so many 18 years to early twenties....and I was one of them. We grew up fast and became a very tight knit group out in the field. The same is true for our troops fighting today....young but doing what their country has asked of them. I respect.....I applaud.....I appreciate all they are doing today.

The US soldiers were doing as instructed but we were so young scared and naive. Average age was probably not even 19. I had hoped when I left the service that this country had learned it's lesson. Apparently not. I never met a south Vietnamese villager that gave much thought to politics.

Huh.... I am a US Marine 1st Recon. And I gotta say, this war was bullshit, they had no reason to go there to die. Fight Communism? Fuck that it was to act like the police of other nations, we had no reason to go there and when no one wanted to go we drafted young teens that just got out of Highschool to go fight for something that was bullshit. And so many of them died, fuck this those marines/soldiers were criminals they killed innocents because they were trying to get out their pain.

@MrLiamBoland I know of only one incident involving marines 'killing innocents', and one by the Army, during the Vietnam war. Most operations in Vietnam had a 5-10 to one body count. The VC and NVA were the ones in pain. Prior to the annoucement by Nixon of the withdrawal of US troops, most GIs believed they were fighting against communism. (they were). After the announcement morale declined and nobody wanted to die for a lost cause. Would you.

@elsocialistadeargent If I remember history correctly it was the communists in the north who were supplieing weapons to the VC in the south, and later when they were no longer effective sent their own troops into South Vietnam to wage war. I think the people of South Vietnam had a right to be free from communism. Yankees are a great baseball team, but I like the Red Sox.:P

My two great uncles got drafted during the Vietnam war aganist there own will they both fought with combat units. They saw action in during the Tet offensive then after there tour was over they retured home to angry protesters who threated them and they blamed them for the war and after the US left Vietnam and the North took it over. They both commited suicide over nightmares and flashbacks. Even other Vets turned on them. Respect all vets. RIP

@nienmaivan You forget that the 'people' of South Vietnam did not want to be controlled by the communist north. They asked for and recieved US help to stop the VC who were being supplied by the north. Many hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese fought very bravely against the northern invaders.
