My mother was born in 1931 and her sister was seven years older. I can assure you that the tomboyish look was very much in vogue in those days. My father was born in 1928 and his sister was tomboyish too. Has nothing to do with "transgender" or sexual identity or whatever you want to call it. It's just the era. Even adults had bobbed hair---long hair was out of date. Look at old photos from that era and you'll see what I mean. And people really WERE poor back then even more than today.
Baby Rose Marie was indeed a child wonder! If you see this whole short, she sings 3 songs all in a row in a single take without a glitch anywhere! Thats talent! Today you get a lip syncer to a single song track that took 50 takes to make it right.
@bryonirvin About a year ago you asked, "What year was this made?" in reference to a video of Baby Rose Marie singing "Don't Be Like That." It seems no one ever answered. In case you're still interested, it was 1929.
I would say that Judy was the greatest child singer of all time (And best female singer of all time, period!) , but, Rose Marie was pretty amazing herself; and in her later years, a real treat as Sally Rogers, or just making the World laugh on the REAL Hollywood Squares (Not the awful remakes with John "Bowser" Bowman or that unfunny, so-called comedienne, Whoopie Goldburg)
Rose Marie was an amazing child singer, perhaps the best at the time. Margaret O'Brian was perhaps the best child actress. Shirley Temple WAS the best child entertainer. As FDR said during the depression, as long as we have Shirley we are ok. Rose Marie is one of a handful still with us that starred in vaudeville. Mickey Rooney is easily the best known living male. Delores Hope who also starred in the Ziegfied Follies (101 in May) & (to be 100 7- 4) Gloria Stewart are 2 others Fem.
I have a conundrum please help me. Does Alley Mills aka Pamela Douglas from The Bold and the Beautiful look like a descendent of Rose Marie aka Sally Rogers from the Dick Van Dyke show?
I was at the toast for Rose Marie at the Magic Castle last night (07/13/09) here in Hollywood. It was an intimate question & answer evening & a general celebration of Rose Marie's career. She is a WONDERFUL lady & an entertainer the likes of which we don't see much anymore.
She is very supportive of gays & I am sure she wouldn't mind someone thinking she is gay. But she isn't. To this day she still mourns the death of her husband. Strong women aren't necessarily gay.
I am so sick and so tried of every celebrity being branded a lesbian or homo. Get two or three people going in a discussion and somebody is going to come up with, "He's gay," or "She's a lesbian." I am sick of it. 99% of it just is not true, and is merely malicious rumor. Yes, MALICIOUS. If it was not intended maliciously, it would never be brought up. STOP IT!!!!
You have a definite AMEN from my corner. Obviously the folks who are saying this are folks who definitely do not have a life....or intelligence for that matter.
she turned into no such thing! she worked the stand-up circuit, In her act, she adopted the persona of a wisecracking single girl looking for a husband. In reality, she was happily MARRIED to trumpeter Bobby Guy, who worked with Louis Armstrong and Hoagy Carmichael,
the whole part of my statement that you must observe is "happily" also you may want to look her up most homosexual stars eventually are outed if they don't out themselves and yes many homosexual celebrities marry for appearances however rosemarie to my understanding is not lesbian and if she where would that be an excuse to call her a derogatory name such as dyke?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You must be a kid. Lesbians don't mind the term dyke, so who's offended. Except you when you found out Rosemarie's gay. Morey Amsterdam almost slipped and gave her story away on TV.
Richard Deacon mentioned it before he died to many people, and Morey Amsterdam made references to "the OTHER gay person who was a regular on the show." By the way, lady, when it comes to "clearly" doing research, you might ask your mother or one of your teachers about how being a married woman with a child has nothing to do with being a lesbian or not. NOTHING.
I already answered that question. But far be it from me to continue to argue with some homophobe who can't even spell shit and believes being a married mother means you can't possibly be a lesbian.
Well, I named not one, but two, sources who worked with the woman for years. I hope you don't also believe the world is flat, too, because reliable sources cannot be trusted. And if you ain't a homophobe, why do you think being a lesbian is so offensive?
Yea but how legitimate are they? Unless I hear it confirmed by Rose marie herself, than I refuse to believe what someone else said.
And no I'm offended because it's a baseless claim. I'm offended at any lie, whether it's about sexual orientation, religion, politics. Do you know how easy it is to spread false information?
I know plenty of homosexuals and love them for who they are, you have no right to call me homophobic simply because I questioned your statement.
Please get hold of yourself, lady. If you love Rose Marie and her little black bows so much that the possibility of her being a lesbian upsets you like this, remember that there are doctors out there who can help you.
Oh please you're pathetic, unless you have some real proof please stop saying that. I know you want her to be a lesbian...I really don't know why. I think it's a little creepy that you're obsessing over a little girl. Really get over it, there is no proof to back up the claim. It's just a rumor that's been hanging over her head for quite some time.
You still see her as a little girl? Do you also pretend you know her and she's your special friend? Using your logic, you could claim to because she, herself, has never denied it, right?
I agree with unclean it is probable that RM is a lesbian because if you have been around the block, know enough people, you have a good idea of who's who, plus undeniably RM- for want of a better expression- just seems lesbian. But I think he should have just enjoyed the clip and not told people what they don't want to know. If you are waiting for gay and lesbians in showbiz to "confirm"- you really mean "confess"- don't hold your breath, because as shown by comments here, it is still taboo.
It's not about what I want or don't want to hear, I was raised to be tolerant of such things and raised during a time where homphobia was not tolerated. I would have no problem with her being a lesbian, I just think people need to use some proper evidence before stating something like that.
@Sshelly34213 She speaks, acts and moves in a manner not meant to attract the opposite sex, and I don't mean in character, I mean as herself. Usually when one "seems" like a gay man or lesbian, it turns out that way. I have no idea what "time homophobia was not tolerated." Homophobia is a state of mind. Yours, for one, calling unclean "pathetic" & demanding proof, as if a crime.
But calling her a "big dyke" was something he should have put a lid on, considering it's a clip of a child.
@defundthewar What the hell are you talking about? I never said anything about her, if she's a lesbian I don't give a shit.
Yes there was a time when gays were thought to be evil, mentally insane, and criminal. Being a homosexual was actually crime until 2005 when it was finally overturned by the supreme court. I was born in 88 and grew up during a time when people stopped caring about such things. Matthew Shepard's story was horrifying to me as a child.
@defundthewar Can you give me specific examples that support the idea that she moves in such a way that turns off guys?
Perhaps she's just not a very feminine person, or not someone who's able to understand how to communicate outwardly. Perhaps she's more introspective.
Also...she's about 4 or 5 in that video, she's probably not thinking about that. She's probably imitating the moves of other singers, she also may not have grasped physical grace yet being so young.
I had no idea you were barely an adult yourself, had I known I would never have written, and this is my last. I own watches older than you. Get out there and live and soak up experience and you will be able to discern what's what. I was referring to RM's behavior as an adult, not in this video, but you cannot fully understand the topic; it is not all academic, it takes living. What unclean wrote was inappropriate for this video; he knew it would be taken as slander and cause defensiveness.
@defundthewar I agree that he was being inappropriate.
I disagree only because I actually have a great deal of openly gay friends. Some of the men have more feminine body language and more feminine tastes, but I know plenty who are very into sports and who are very gruff.
I don't think experience is something you necessarily have to be older to have, just throwing that out there,
One can argue about the academics of it, in some cases body language and tell us something.
@defundthewar Are you basing your viewpoint on the fact that her voice is lower than usual? If so, that's because she's a contralto.
Also take into account the fact that she was a little girl in the 20s, imitating singers in the 20s. The women's movement during the 20s allowed women to be more lax about being "famine." I actually think the 90s was similar because I really have no idea of how to be "feminine either." I mean these things are determined very much by what society decides is female
@Sshelly34213 for example, transgenders are often very manly during their early childhood/toddler years. Some girls can be very rough, banging things, playing with tonka trucks, being very aggressive. Transgenders are different than homosexuals mainly because they feel like they are the opposite sex in their head. I don't believe gays and lesbians feel anything of the sort. I have met the most girly girl lesbians who are more feminine in terms of body language than myself.
@defundthewar That's what I'm trying to point out, that I have no experience growing up during a time or racism or really even homophobia. Sure there are pockets of these types of feelings all over the country, but the average person in my generation is no longer that way.
I'd say it's a HELL of a lot more homophobic to suggest that someone is a lesbian because they "move differently."
@defundthewar Sorry for rambling a bit here, but youtube does not give you much space to get your opinions out properly in one post.
I have a VERY difficult time communicating through body language. I know what I want you to think of me, but I just can't express it. I'm also very straight, have had crushes on men since I was a little girl, but when it comes to guys? I just don't know how to express body language properly.

To buzzbaybear: I agree. ^_^ (Just saw "Baby Rose Marie" last weekend, in one of those "shorts" that Turner Classic Movies likes to show between movies. I could tell from the singing style that she was the same Rose Marie some of us remember from the Dick Van Dyke Show [no, I am not THAT old... I remember it from Nick at Nite and TV Land! ^_^] ...I hadn't realized that she'd had a whole other career as a child singing star! ^_^) Bravo (brava ^_^), Baby Rose Marie! ^_^ ^_^
She was on game shows and comercials in the 70's and early 80's. She was one of the side kicks (along with Maury Amsterdam) on the Dick Van Dyke show, and guest starred in Murphy Brown. You'd probably recognize her as an adult.
