My mother was born in 1931 and her sister was seven years older. I can assure you that the tomboyish look was very much in vogue in those days. My father was born in 1928 and his sister was tomboyish too. Has nothing to do with "transgender" or sexual identity or whatever you want to call it. It's just the era. Even adults had bobbed hair---long hair was out of date. Look at old photos from that era and you'll see what I mean. And people really WERE poor back then even more than today.

Baby Rose Marie was indeed a child wonder! If you see this whole short, she sings 3 songs all in a row in a single take without a glitch anywhere! Thats talent! Today you get a lip syncer to a single song track that took 50 takes to make it right.

I would say that Judy was the greatest child singer of all time (And best female singer of all time, period!) , but, Rose Marie was pretty amazing herself; and in her later years, a real treat as Sally Rogers, or just making the World laugh on the REAL Hollywood Squares (Not the awful remakes with John "Bowser" Bowman or that unfunny, so-called comedienne, Whoopie Goldburg)

Rose Marie was an amazing child singer, perhaps the best at the time. Margaret O'Brian was perhaps the best child actress. Shirley Temple WAS the best child entertainer. As FDR said during the depression, as long as we have Shirley we are ok. Rose Marie is one of a handful still with us that starred in vaudeville. Mickey Rooney is easily the best known living male. Delores Hope who also starred in the Ziegfied Follies (101 in May) & (to be 100 7- 4) Gloria Stewart are 2 others Fem.

I was at the toast for Rose Marie at the Magic Castle last night (07/13/09) here in Hollywood. It was an intimate question & answer evening & a general celebration of Rose Marie's career. She is a WONDERFUL lady & an entertainer the likes of which we don't see much anymore.

She is very supportive of gays & I am sure she wouldn't mind someone thinking she is gay. But she isn't. To this day she still mourns the death of her husband. Strong women aren't necessarily gay.

I agree with unclean it is probable that RM is a lesbian because if you have been around the block, know enough people, you have a good idea of who's who, plus undeniably RM- for want of a better expression- just seems lesbian. But I think he should have just enjoyed the clip and not told people what they don't want to know. If you are waiting for gay and lesbians in showbiz to "confirm"- you really mean "confess"- don't hold your breath, because as shown by comments here, it is still taboo.

Yes there was a time when gays were thought to be evil, mentally insane, and criminal. Being a homosexual was actually crime until 2005 when it was finally overturned by the supreme court. I was born in 88 and grew up during a time when people stopped caring about such things. Matthew Shepard's story was horrifying to me as a child.

I disagree only because I actually have a great deal of openly gay friends. Some of the men have more feminine body language and more feminine tastes, but I know plenty who are very into sports and who are very gruff.

I don't think experience is something you necessarily have to be older to have, just throwing that out there,

One can argue about the academics of it, in some cases body language and tell us something.

Also take into account the fact that she was a little girl in the 20s, imitating singers in the 20s. The women's movement during the 20s allowed women to be more lax about being "famine." I actually think the 90s was similar because I really have no idea of how to be "feminine either." I mean these things are determined very much by what society decides is female

@Sshelly34213 for example, transgenders are often very manly during their early childhood/toddler years. Some girls can be very rough, banging things, playing with tonka trucks, being very aggressive. Transgenders are different than homosexuals mainly because they feel like they are the opposite sex in their head. I don't believe gays and lesbians feel anything of the sort. I have met the most girly girl lesbians who are more feminine in terms of body language than myself.

The *very best* child actress from way back when was, in my opinion, Margaret O'Brien (Journey for Margaret, Our Vines Have Tender Grapes, The Canterville Ghost [really old version], etc.) She did not *usually* sing/dance all that much (although she did a *little* of that too *sometimes*)...she ACTED. ^_^

Margaret O'Brien was truly a child ACTRESS. Shirley Temple was more of a child STAR (although I think she really had more acting talent than Hollywood wanted to let her use!).
