If you listen to the sound, you can hear two shots happening very close to each other. This is not something to freak out about. These are his movies, his stories, he can make them what he wants. I will forever think they are awesome.
I hate how George Lucas tries to rationalise that Han 'would never kill someone in cold blood' -- Han Solo is a SMUGGLER. Smugglers by trade are thieving liars, only out for wealth and themselves. Han initially didn't even care about Luke or Leia in Episode IV, just the prospect of a significant payday.
I hate the recut scene where Greedo fires a shot. It's a joke from a filmography/editing standpoint, and makes Lucas look like a tool.
"The first time you point a blaster at me will be your last" Han Solo, 1977. Think about it... today if you aim a weapon at some one when police are on the scene you would be taken down without prejudice. Han did the right thing and shot first! :-)
I haven't seen this version where he shoots first since I was a kid. Thank you for uploading this. Now I'm stuck remembering the Version where greedo shoots first.
Why the hell wouldn't anyone defend the Greedo shoots first? This introduced Han Solo, this is the scene that shows you he's a badass. He's not a Super "good" or "bad" guy. He's a regular person, and that's why I like him. Han shot first.
If greedo did shoot first, you or one of your production team members would've put that in the script 34 years ago! I know you were trying to make things less confusing, but lets face it: HAN SHOT FIRST! He You know it because you and your production team put that scene in the first place and we fans know he shot first because we all saw it happen! If you want more evidence, watch this clip! Thankyou
I watched it 6 times, and it to me it doesnt just look like Greedo shot second, it looks like he didn't shoot period. I just see a blast and it seems Han just slew this dude. I'm not under the impression that Greedo shot at all.
If you think about the conversation, greedo really had no reason to shoot when he did in the updated version. Han on the other hand, was cornered, which gave him plenty reason to shoot
..why the fuck does lucas even care? I mean, seriously?
Who wouldn't have shot in that situation, I sure as fuck would have
and it's not like Han was ever supposed to he a moral crusader, he only agrees to help Luke in the first place because he was being vastly over-payed and couldn't turn it down.
1. They show Han pull out his gun which implies he was going to shoot Greedo anyway
2. Greedo couldn't miss from point blank range
3. Lucas altering it to have them shoot at almost the same time makes it even more pointless
4. If his current statement of Greedo always shot first was true he should have admitted that 15 years ago when this began. Also there's too much evidence to prove him wrong. The original script, the original comic, the original novel, and THE ORIGINAL SCENE ITSELF!!!!!!!!!
@sharkkingx Just because he stated it doesn't mean it's true - ever heard of a history revision? In hindsight he wanted to make Han look like a good guy, but this scene shows him in a (really) bad light - he shot the guy point blank before the other guy could shoot him.
George Lucas can say whatever he wants and re-edit the scene however many times he feels necessary. As a sell-out and a hack, in the end, it's meaningless.
@NextG666 Well techincally he didn't miss. Han dodged it lmao. Of course Greedo was dumb enough to aim for the head when he should've aimed at the body first lol
@LudusVan There's only one blaster noise, and there's no mark or evidence of any kind next to Han's head. I think it can be assumed that Greedo never fired.
clearly it looks like Han shot first, but according to news yesterday Greedo always shot first. Yes, ladies and gentlemen we were all wrong, Greedo always shot first according to Lucas. The SE just made it less confusing and clearer. We sick human beings just wanted to believe Han shot Greedo down in cold blood. We should all be ashamed.
Greedo never fucking fired a shot dumbass! His shot was added in to the later versions becouse they wanted Han to be good guy. If you dont believe me look at hans head, it was digitally rendered to dodge Greedos shot. Lucas is wrong.
I have a copy of the Star Wars novelization written by George Lucas and that book is pretty clear that Han sneakily shot Greedo from under the table rather than be taken. Thats just how it was in the original movie. If Lucas wants us to believe that was never his intention, I have the book he himself wrote that says otherwise. Greedo was there to capture Solo for the bounty; he was a bounty hunter, not an assassin. Greedo never shot at all and thats why he died. The End.
@Wyrmwould I just found that same book in my basement yesterday and scanned the pages and posted on facebook. It's so obvious in the novel that Greedo wanted to take it outside. He tells Solo to get up, and then Solo blasts him into a "smoking slimy spot on the stone floor."
George Lucas should do what he wants to his movies. The sad part is he doesn't like the edit where greedo shoots first. Lots of people wanted him to change it so their kids wouldn't think of him as a cold blooded killer. George Lucas wanted han to shoot first to show how far the charecter develops into a good guy.
It doesn't really matter to me who shot first because Han looks awesome either way. But in defense of Greedo shooting, at least you can see Han pull out his blaster.
its sad that i havent seen this version since i was 8. im 22 now. can we please get the originals on dvd or bluray? and for longer than a month? jesus christ man.
Greedo Shot First! I mean, come on, it even shows it. Like, Han moved his head to dodge the bullet and then shot. Seriously, what's up with saying Han shot first? It shows it right there IN THE MOVIE!
@luis6079 You serious, bro? Read the video description. In the original release of the movie, Han Solo straight up murdered Greedo in cold blood. George Lucas changed it in 1994 for all the little children such as yourself.
Can anyone tell me where I can get a "Non F'ed up version" of Star Wars on DVD, before Lucas got stupid and vandalized his own master piece by adding crap, like Greedo shooting first...and missing from three feet, needless saturn ring like blast waves form the death star and such.
@lastchip Lucasarts released the non-remastered cuts on DVD a while back. They were released in a limited 2 pack DVD that included the remastered version as well.
@MrEniena Yeah, I have that set. I hadn't seen the originals unaltered since I was a kid until I ordered them from Amazon last year. I really like being able to compare the 2 versions side by side. Some of the added CGI in the Special Editions actually adds to the story (like in the Death Star trench run). Some of it takes away, like all the extra crap in Mos Eisley. Either way, this scene is MUCH better in its unaltered form, as seen here.
@Kirochi80 lol got any other comebacks, I don't mind the changes that much, HELL i perfer the SE's over the originals, yes i have watched both versions (except hayden at end of ROTJ), but god you idiots BITCH over scenes you guys are fuckin nuts about that lucas changed SO WHATXD! Lucas can do whatever HE wants to his films. Regardless.
Forget heroics, shooting first when a guy is pointing a gun at you is just smart. If Greedo had shot first and been a good aim, then...well, its pretty hard to look heroic with a hole in your head.

Watching over this again, I just realized the style and pacing is a little too hard-core for what Lucas had in mind over the prequel trilogy. It's a shame, he had to cater to children with lightsaber nerds and Jar Jar.
@ItsBaconPower If you watch the 1997 Special Edition and every edition that has been released since, both of them fire and Greedo somehow misses. Mainly because he was never actually supposed to have fired a shot in the first place.
I've got a few questions about this "Han shot first no Greedo shot first" debate. Why WOULDN'T Han shoot first? Whether it's canon that he did or not, why would it matter if he had? Also, why do people anywhere, even rabid Star Wars fans care at all about (or even remember for that matter) a scene that only takes up an insigificant 1 minute of decades of Star Wars lore?
@immortalfrieza Because it helps set the tone of Han- if he shoots first he's a cool-headed action hero, if Greedo shoots first then Han's a chump who got lucky that Greedo missed him at point-blank range.
Plus some people don't like it when scenes are rewritten. I would never buy a redone copy of ET because Spielberg removed guns 'for the children' and I won't buy a copy that makes Han look like a lucky chump rather than a smart guy. I want the film I saw as a kid.
Unfortunately this edition is no longer canon. As the owner of the story, George Lucas, has mended the scene to show Greedo shooting first. This footage therefore has become mere fan fiction.
@probababably Star Wars is much bigger than George Lucas. If he wants to say he owns it, he can go fuck himself. He didn't make those movies by himself.
