About discussions about if or not the balloon would actually manage to lift the boy you can do some easy calculations. The balloon apparantly contained 28 Cubic meters of Helium. That would give the balloon a Lift Force of 354,7 Newton (around 36 KG) Though, to get the "actual" lift we have to take the weight of both the structure and the Helium, Helium density = 0,18 kg/meter 3. Weight = 5 KG. Construction Weight = 8,2 KG. Total lift = 22,8 KG. So yes, I guess it could lift the boy.
Though, when looking at the balloon airbourne it seems like 30 % of the helium is gone, this would of had made the hoax obvious at the time if people allready knew all those numbers :)

Well for one thing helium does not have that kind of lifting capacity. That kid could have stood on the ground and held that balloon with a piece of kite string. I read a news report on this. It said the family had been trying to get their own show on TV. They had been on "wife swap" and later tried to get on a show with TLC. My guess is that they did this so that they could get some media attention. It goes along with what the kid said on a another vid.

The thing that really supprises me more than anything else is that no one has picked up on the fact that this balloon could not have lifted a child that size off the ground. How so you ask? Well for one thing helium does not have that kind of lifting capacity. That kid could have stood on the ground and held that balloon with a piece of kite string. For instance a weather balloon about that size has a lifting capacity of about 10-15 pounds.

I read a news report on this. It said the family had been trying to get their own show on TV. They had been on "wife swap" and later tried to get on a show with TLC. My guess is that they did this so that they could get some media attention. It goes along with what the kid said on a another vid.
