SO SO many comments about the 'head near the engine' saga - let me clear this up for once - IT IS NOT DANGEROUS! The air is sucked in here but not as much as you would think. The air is expanded inside the engine so 'more' leaves the output end. If the engine explodes then it does so laterally (out to the sides) and not down it's length so the driver is 'safe' :)
I understand what you are saying since the density of the air is greater when it enters the engine and as the exhaust expands it, the density decreases greatly. By the way, is that a pulse jet?
there is too much fuel going into the engine tweak it a bit down so that there is no white smoke the smoke means all the fuel isn't burning so your not getting your full performance out of it :)

mmm, I think that space-ship rocket engines are big turbo-compressors where oxygen fuel is supplied from a tank and compressed by the turbo-compressor for combustion.

It's a large turbocharger with the compressor (cold) outlet piped into a combustion chamber. Fuel is added and burnt causing the air inside to expand 'alot'. This air is then fed into the turbine (hot) side and thus turns the compressor and the turbine together via the central shaft. A 'round robin' type affair! The exhaust out is then your thrust.
