  • I was actually on this excursion, in vestibule on the right hand side about the third or fourth coach back from the sound recording car. All the way from Milan into Belleville, we laid down the blackest cloud of smoke I have ever seen. Ahh the memories! I really miss the 1218 more than anything on earth!!

  • any other videos of the 1218 in michigan

  • I love that whistle sooooo much. R.I.P. 1218

  • @HaloCE14 I saw 1218 Monday (Memorial Day) and climbed up on her. There is a plastic glass that keeps you out of the cab but you can see inside just fine. Also the firebox doors are a bit open and you can tell there is nothing inside. 611 is next to it.

  • I like the single "double lick" from the exhaust as she's stopping...and starting...

The whistle is a N&W hooter as applied to all their freight locomotives. Ain't no way it sounds like SP4449's whistle...

  • does this train still do excursions????

  • It's funny, you know her whistle was from a tug boat!

  • this steam program norfolk closed down needs to come back with the echo of the giants.

  • I was 2 year old at the time back in 1986 i was born man why did they cancel this steam program greedy bastards =(

  • just join up on skype and look for trainmaster 844, gyjg, ronthecyborg, NCSTL576 or myself

  • From a distance it sounds like SP 4449.

  • I was on that train!

And man, that whistle! Oh, that whistle!

  • This information may sound promising to not only myself but also to a ring of youtube users on skype which includes YT users trainmaster844, gyjg, ronthecyborg, SPGP60 & myself to name a few. If u want, you could join our ring and share the info man.

  • How do I join?

  • Even though the economy will likely recover we still got one issue thats the fact that with freight traffic the way it is. It would probably be impossible to find a way to run steam without interferring with freight traffic. The only option would be to run it on an abandoned railroad line like they did with the NKP 765 excursions in Indiana but that would mean they couldnt go very fast because of the danger of a possible derailment because of the lack of maintenance.

  • And of course it wasnt the the CEO who closed the steam program, it was chairman of the board David R Goode according to trains magazine. They had a meeting about their expenses and they were trying to find ways to cut expenses so that idiot David Goode suggested abolishing the steam program. And they all agreed to it. Now the new CEO is planning to reopen the steam program, Unfortunately, the economy tanked. Even though the econmy is showing signs of possible recovery. We still have one issue.

  • Actually, I recently had a conversation with Rick Harris of NS and he said they might try to bring the steam program when the economy gets back on track(which i bet it will) and if they find a way to run freight and steam with out causing problems. He also said the CEOs been planning to reopen the steam program. So I give it a good chance that the steam program will reopen.

  • Is this what your saying true?

  • Yes it is true but the conversation was a little while ago, Im going to talk with him again so I can make sure I got it right.

  • OK you do that

  • Do I have to become freinds with one of the guys in the ring?

  • well, its best that you create a skype account and then i'll introduce you to the guys in the ring. I suggest your skype name should be your youtube name, that way people would reconize who you are.

  • Unfortunately I cant join skype because Im not allowed to make internet calls. Sorry. Maybe I could send you a message with my information that I learned and you could send it to these guy in this ring.

  • why did'nt 611 go out during april may june or junly or august 1988

  • wow this was in 1988 i really love 1988 in fact it is my most favorite year along with 1991 1992 and 1994

  • As much as I'd like to hope so, with a rumor as big as that one I'll have to say I'll believe it when I see it. I do hope it comes to fact though.

  • what about challengers?

  • From which road? There's only two Union Pacific challengers...

  • well i know that...but....

  • What do you think about restoring 9000 to.

  • that is cool, the whistle echo's around 3:08

  • no the video is 1:28

  • Great video. Thanks for sharing it.

1218 was the first mainline steamer I ever "met" and I'll always have a special place for it in my heart.

  • In Fact, riding with Bob Saxton, & jack Taylor, which they both ran 611 & 1218. They never ran past 40 MPH. That was the max speed they could go,Cause They gave me cabride's only one way over the weekends, this is how i know ,,, Sandy was sometimes the fireman. In melvindale i stayed with another robert during the nite to keep the loco ready for the next morning...

  • I was also on this trip,& the others in those 10 years they came to allen park, because i was part of the Road Crew,& helped them out over the weekends, & this is where i got my FREE ride to ft.wayne & back sat & sunday's in those years.

  • I was actually on this excursion, but on the opposite side. We really flew all the way from Milan into Allen Park, Mich. at speeds of 55 MPH at times. I really, really miss the NS Steam Program, and especially the N&W 611 and 1218.

  • Thanks for the comments:) I only wish I had better equipment back in 1988 but what I did use was "state of the art" for the home user,...

  • Great Video. I sure do miss that engine!

  • What a great video...brings back some good memories!
