  • Yeah!! DSO!

  • I always thought his first symphony was informed by outside influences a lot, but this one was the starting point for him defining his style.

  • The opening reminds me of Beethoven's 4th piano concerto. Very warm, loving and tender.

  • i love 1:17, makes me wanna play violin lol

  • Ummm, what is earthatic??

  • @podiumman2 channel name

  • get to see the minnesota orchestra preform this in june, and i get to play III and IV with my orchestra just before that, does life get any better?

  • Great composer, and absolutely in my top 10!!!

  • I have a great emotional connection with this beautiful music. I love it.

But, since I am not a musician, would someone spell out for me reasons why this is so great? Does it deserve to be in the same class as the music of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart?

  • @robertrstevens I would say, it's great because it plays so powerfully on the emotions. Also, the way Sibelius writes for the different instruments of the orchestra is excellent.

  • @robertrstevens Oh gee, where do you start to answer a question like that....first of all, the basic material, the melodies are wonderfully tuneful and "catchy" (that term actually comes from the old Italian "Caccia" meaning chase and was a term to describe what we call in English a "round.") Secondly, it's what he does with the tunes, the development, the haunting harmonies, the orchestration.

  • @robertrstevens Absolutely Sibelius ranks among the best of composers. His ability to generate musical tension, and resolve those moments in ways which keep the piece moving (through great pacing!) and developing over the course of the symphony is amazing!!!! Plus, the way in which Sibelius wrote was amazing . He would write out each part one at a time (the length of the symphony), as opposed to writing for all instruments one measure at a time. So the entire piece was already in his mind!!

  • @groovehard Many thanks to you - and to emilygclarinet and podiumman2 - for spelling out so well reasons why Sibelius is "so great". I sincerely appreciate it.

  • 0:59 is incredible

  • Dark, I thank you for putting this recording on. I have a question: Did you ever hear an old LP of it with Serge Koussevitsky and the Boston Orch." That was my first acquaintance with the symphony. I have since had Ornandy and Philadelphia, Mariss Jansons and Philharmonia, Herbert Blomstedt and San Fran. I prefer a bit more leisurely pace than this one, with more pregnant pauses, but this is a very good interpretation, well worth having. No classical composition more glorious than movement 4.

  • Thanx for putting this up, DarkRaimundo. However, I, too, must ask: who are the performers?

  • @schlesmail The Detroit Symphony Orchestra

    Have a nice day!

  • @DarkRaimundo: OK. And is the conductor Neeme Järvi?

  • @DarkRaimundo If you hurry, the DSO is playing Shostakovich's Festive Overture as well as this tonight at like 8.

  • @DarkRaimundo ....and the conductor?

  • @DarkRaimundo Is that with Paul Paray conducting, or someone else?

  • Conductor? Orchestra? Year?

  • Who are your top 3 Composers apart from sibelius i mean?

I really like Chaicovsky and beethoven

But i really that wagner is the top

  • Sibelius is a genius ... but this oboe player is AWFUL who ever it is ruins the piece every time they play

  • Nice hairdo!

  • this is definitely one of my favorite from him

  • What a great conductor! Though the sound quality of the woodwinds could be better, it's overall the best recording I've heard of this. Who is the conductor?

  • this is FANTASTIC! what a great piece of music. I am playing this at a music conservatory i am attending. Thanks for the post!

  • 2:22... he was a chuncky man

  • playing this with the Sudbury Symphony tonight!!

  • Brilliant!

  • Sibelius is terribly brilliant...i'm searching for my favourite section but have not been able to locate it yet...the Allegro Moderato (Part IV) of Symphony.2....

  • cool! Sibelius is one of my favourite, I love his symphonies and his Violin Concerto is my favourite (violin concerto of all times)

  • ?? you're not very keen on Sibelius' music, yet your avatar is a portrait of Sibelius, your channel wallpaper has a portrait of Sibelius, and you list Sibelius as one of your favourite composers?

are you sure you know the definition of "keen"?

    lol

  • I think I should change my description. I posted this video when I was just getting to know Sibelius' music. Now I consider him as a genius.

  • DarkRaimundo >>>Well you've not yet changed your description.

  • @DarkRaimundo you got that right. he was a genius, indeed.

  • I love this music. Where do you get the recordings, because I would like to get this symphony, along with the Rachmaninoff symphonic dances recording so I could have them on my iPod

  • It's dedicated to me, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am so glad that you enjoy my videos, I think that I should dedicate a video to you, who's your favourite composer? This is a great symphony, I do not know much Sibelius, but I love this!
