I absolulely love this song, indeed, anything by Joni--and this is one of the two or three albums/cds I don'd have. I'll correct that! Thanks for uploading! For years aI listened to this on a cassette tape someone made for me, thinking I would one day replace it with a cd.
"First you're green then you're grey" possibly the best turned phrase in the histroy of lyrics. My best friend introduced me to two of my favorite things in 1975...Joni and Cosmo quizzes. Halcyon days.
Joni's comments on the Greed Decade. To see her transition from the love songs of the early 80's on Wild Things Run Fast to the more cynical and angry Chalk Mark is telling. The 80's were not one of Joni's favorite decades.
I agree. Must be the demographics of Joni's fan base who themselves were getting on with their lives in the 80's. We all knew that the 60's and 70's were long over by then. By the 90's, we were of the age when we were starting to realize that some of what many of us stood for in the 60's and 70's were right. By the 2000's, it seemed like Joni and the rest of us retrenched into deep introspection with the advent of the Bush years. "Shine" was a valiant "comeback" that laid it all out.
@ghanick If the 80's were the greed decade when the American populus prospered...I wonder what Joni would think of the government greed of 2009-2011, now that there is 19% unemployment and the governments out of control deficit spending.
@n2motocross I am glad you did well in the 80's, but to say that the American populus prospered is absurd....many did not ride the gravy train. As far as governent greed, if it did nothing to try to put a floor under the travesties and thievery of the Bush era, we'd probably have 85% unemployment now. Obama may be a sell-out, but having McCain/Palin in the White House is as frightening as the earthquake/tsunami that just higt Japan. Our's may be coming, too.
Joni's wonderful, of course, but this isn't one of her better tunes. She's been down this road before, more effectively on "Hissing" and "The Arrangement". It seemed like she designed a song to blend with Don Henley's vocal style. It worked better with Peter Gabriel on "My Secret Place". She sounds strained and too cynical, even by Joni standards. This is one of the few Joni songs that sounds dated.
Joni.... I am your secret lover ;) Thank you Joni ....I love your music.....since i was a wee lad..

there was video on youtube where she said she liked synthesizers in 1987.
she did good in the 1980s up to 1988 but didn't get heard for the most part.
drumming is annoying here but the rest of the song is good.

I have always liked this song, like pretty much all of them on Chalkmark. :) I've always liked the feel of this one.
