So, if a snake has two recessive genes that don't match (in the video's example, one ghost and one pied gene), the snake is visibly normal? So that explains the results I've been seeing on the World of Ball Pythons' genetic wizard. I thought a snake with one ghost and one pied gene would come out ghost pied, I didn't realize the 'normal' gene would stick around.
You can only breed so much before you have to add new types to get newer types but where do they all come from? sense all came from a wild type normal???? im lost
heterozygous ha both dominant and resessive traits but of course the dominant is showing so it's difficult to know generally if a snake is het unless you bred it and still you only know by a percent chance most times
hi my name is zach carter i have 100 python snakes babies need to know wer to take them i havent got no rome for them email me at zach.zsc@hotmail.co.uk
i know its a bit late, but sorry about your dog. my auntie has 2 16 year old border collies and one of them is having trouble moving, hearing and seeing and probably wont be around for much longer :(
@Nekrosis3 no it is possible but your chances are slim to none. For those people saying its not possible: how the hell do you think all those resessive and co-dominant morphs got there? Your chanes are probably close to 1 in every 2,000 or so
doesnt breeding sibling ball pythons result in a genetic mutation and heath problems? i know it works that way with dogs but im not sure with snakes...
@Nekrosis3 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% chance...unless there HET for albino :D
Kel's Question of the week. You guys have a sweet job, handling snakes all day. I am new to the snake world as I just got my first one. Love watching your vids. Anyways i am a private investigator licensed with the Ontario Government. Thanks for this video it answered many questions of mine.
if I BREED A RECESSIVE LEOPARD GECKO TO A RECESSIVE LEOPARD GECKO WILL THE OFFSPRING PHENO TYPE APEAR AS THE RECESSIVE PARENTS OR WILL THEY LOOK NORMAL DOMIN TYPE? THANKS 4 UR HELP.
Kel's QOTW: I work for Microsoft through a vendor supporting their worldwide datacenters. We manage backups (like all of the hotmail, xboxlive, msn, live, bing information + alot of hosted sites and services), internet URL redirection, and about 15 other services that my team provides for microsoft. I also work the graveyard shift. It's not as exciting and fullfilling as your jobs, but I enjoy the experience and learn new things every few hours :-p
but at the begining except for "normal" what morphs are found into the wild? I would guess: mojave,spider,pinstripe,pastel...or I might be completely wrong
I'm only 13 but i kinda get it through my biology classes in school with brown and blue eyes and that. How do you identify different morphs hough like by name?
This is still confusing, my main question: how do you determine the snakes trait? through experience? is an albino always going to be a recessive while a mjoave will always be a co-dominant and so on?

great episode once again! haha so the goal is chewy'si got it. tht was easy lol! but im 14 and am just starting high school so my job is doin good and i also work part time at a local reptile/herp shop near my house.
I hope I can major in Biology, and earn a good sum of my cash through working as a vet. Then, I want to work as a herpetologist. Road trips+Snakes= YES, please!
I also want to breed pythons and constrictors. I would KILL for a baby Red Tail boa, but I don't have the money or space. My grandmother is our only neighbor- owns a two story 3br, 2ba house, and HATES snakes. It KILLS me; we live in one of those ancient block houses.
I was always iffy with genetics but this cleared some things up for me, thanks :)
As for the question:
No, I don't have an interesting job. I work in a small home decor/gift store and it's really not my thing. I'd love to work in a reptile breeding program or small exotic animal store.
i am currently at work and dont have the time to read all the comments to see if anybody has already asked but...
i've watched probably a third of your vids so far (im new give me time) but i'm going to the daytona expo aug 22nd and i'm planning on getting a Borneo blood python. Can you do a segment on them, i know in the deadly python vid they were in there for a sec. i think they're the most beautiful snakes there are (specially if you get an orange headed one)
Whew! My head is spinning after this episode! You guys did make it clearer to me - thanks for covering genetics. As for jobs: I do free herp lectures locally (schools, museums, public libraries, and so forth). I also take in herps that have been abandoned, and those that need to be re-homed. Darin is the "video game guru" at the local Best Buy, along with helping me with demos and critters. So, we both have fun jobs!
interesting not really im a high school student. during the summer i work at a machine shop and i work at wendy's all the time so im always straped for time
helo this has nothing to do with the vd but are you selling cresties there not on your website i was looking for a diffrent morph female for my mal plz reply
I work for a car manufacturer, the only part of it I can compare is putting the vehicles togother. All the different options make a different model.
I like the show, trying to explain genetics but maybe do something with showing the snakes instead of the crew or a punnet square like some others have suggested.
I'm in I.T. - used to be a programmer and currently replacing my boss as she is on maternity leave. I manage the Product Development department until she comes back.
I also agree with other posters - explaining genetics is easier to understand with regular Punnett squares rather than using faces from the crew... nice try though!
lol i acually work at a reptile store where we take rescues and we breed animals and sell lots go reptiles. my job is mainly cleaning out everything makeing sure everything is fed and that water bowls are clean :)
How in the world did you get a jaguar ball python!!!? My name is Josh and I'm new to ball python world and excited and was thinking of making jaguar pattern ball python. Inspired by looking at a high flame kenyan sand boa. So if you could help me out and let me know how did you accomplish this? Thanks! By the way love everything you guys do and are about. How did the repairs go after that horrible storm?
I'm just a freshmen in highschool! So i guess that makes me a student for a living. To give you a summary of my day I have to get up, get dressed, go to school, try to learn, come home, do my homework, take a shower, then go to bed. Life is tough!!
im a "pro" skateboarder thats my income, it pays the bills (barley) but the best parts to come home to see the reptiles. i think everybody has some creepy crawlys in em' lol
Me and my co-worker Josh Watch your youtube vids for a living in our Tattoo Shop. I tattoo, he pierces. and when we have down time its Snakebytes tv non stop. Come to FL and get tattoos!!!!
I work in a textbook warehouse, and no, it can't compare to your job. I put books in boxes for a few hours a day, and then once I'm done with that, I put more books in boxes. Maybe if it's a good day, I'll actually get to put some books in some boxes. That's the best!
The punnett square method is by far the easiest way to understand genetics.
And once you are able to work with it, you can pretty much calculate ANY morph out there in a matter of seconds. It's really easy. If you have trouble understanding genetics, i advice you to check out the punnett square system. Google it! It's easy :)
My job is one of the least interesting. Def not as cool as hanging out with snakes all the time. I'm a mailman. 2000-5000 pieces of mail come in, I put it them order, and take them out. Then I do the same thing the next day...and the next...and the next...and....
dude i love all your vids this one was awesome i was actually just about to ask about the double recessive stuff is there somewhere i can go to read about all the differnt like morphs and stuff in greater detal or any good book that actually go into detail about it all about ball pythons thank you
I am a full time Chef. and I also do a lot of work for a local pet store, and also a dog daycare/grooming shop. not including all the work my wife and I do with all of the pets we have at home . Gotta' love animals
I'm in the Army. I don't do much but keep a chair warm but when I do work, I order supplies for vehicles. But I am also a full time mother to a 3 yr old and a wife to my hubby who is also in the Army as a mechanic.
hey im 13, and i got my first job when i was 10 and it was hard because i had to work for what i got i, washed dump truck for $10 an hour but the people lost there buisness now i cook at my perents bar and manage the back of the kitchen on friday fish fry so now i make 5 bucks an hour and i love my job David Smith
Hello Brian it's Bryana....how are you....well as you know my job is working at a reptile pet store....but i love my job it is the best job for me to have because i love animals with a passion so i get to play with tem all day but i also take care of them and clean them and it gives my knowlegde about the animals....alot of people think i am so much older than i really am because of all the knowledge i have..even though i wish i was older...but when i get my dream job witch is urs i will thank u
anaheim is gonna be fun im definetly gonna take pictures with all you guys. and george if you like coasters dont go to disney land its WAYYYYYY to boring. go to six flags its the best of the best!
Hey Brian, is it possible to LITERALLY get a 50/50 snake morph? Example being the first half of the snake would be albino and the second half of the snake being a Bumblebee-Pinstripe? That would be sooo coool!!!!!
what would i get if i breed a normal ball to a het? i am attempting to open a reptile store just something for the townspeople to learn about them any advice
I have a reasonably average job, i am a supermarket service manager. However my man dives with sharks for a living ! He works at the local aquarium and specializes in the coral, amazon and seal displays, but a part of his job he dives with and feeds the 10ft sharks in the huge one million gallon tank!!!
Great show Brian, but lets. see those Boas, oh yeah the guys from the Scottish Exotic Reptiles Forum are hoping to organise a forum visit to the USA to come and visit your facility :)
i'm a waste and recycling operative. which is basically one of the people who go around with a big truck called a dustcart emptying peoples rubbish bins every day. it's a job that isn't for everyone but it's enjoyable for me because i'm always working outside in the fresh air rather than being stuck in a factory or office looking at the same boring 4 walls each day. also one of the safest jobs out there at the mo in the recession because there will always be rubbish bins that need emptying.
he's going to the Canadian Reptile Breeders Expo in september. search it on google to learn more. its gunna be great! its gunna be the biggest expo in canadian history! check ito ut!
im 26 and i was born with muscular dystrophy ive had 37 foot and leg surgeries i walk but dont get around good i got my first ball python when i was 8 years old at the time didnt think much of it when i reached adulthood with my disability wasnt much i could do for a job so i decided 7 years ago to be work towards being a commercial reptile breeder im a long way from my goal dont make much money right now but i love what i do and keep going slowly build towards this dream on step at a time
Im a dance teacher @ sixteen lol :P i teach with my studio hip-hop jazz and lyrical/contemproary :) love the show guys!! im getting a all pretty soon here not sure what kind... have a candy corn already
Hey guys just love the show! I don't really have a job or anything, just a full time student learning biology, next we start the genetics course :) Its what interests me the most and I really think you did a great job of explaining the genetics! I should use this in my class! I hope to be a snake breeder one day! Keep on being awesome!
Awesome show guys, you never cease to amaze me, but im going to to a senior in high school so i dont really have a career but i have been voulenteering for 4 years, i am the vice president of the Toledo Zoo teen program.
i watch your show for a living. no jk im EMT-Paramedic in Pb Arkansas. great show. You should do a show on about the discoveries and orgins of the snakes you breed. i know its all over the internet but it would be cool to see you and your crew's viewpoints.
I love Genetics its the fun part about Ball python breeding im always messing aorund with figuring out what I can make. I work For Isecuretrac they are a company that ships out house arrest units all over the US keeping trac of Offenders making sure there obeying there parole and law.
My job is almost as great as working at bhb. Yup thats right...I work for Amazon Reptile Center in Montclair/Covina California. The things that are definitely better at bhb are the thousands of snakes(especially ball pythons) and the crew is great, although so is mine
People still have jobs!!!?! Not fair! I was laid off, so my job is looking for a job. The hours and pay sucks, but I only have to answer to myself, and I gotta say, I'm a pretty cool boss. Hey, you hiring?
I'm a contract chemical formulator. I formulate pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides...so basically I make poison for a living

cmanclan101 10 months ago
@cmanclan101 single, double, and triple just refer to the number of genes the snake is het for.
Het for albino: single het
Het for albino and axanthic: double het
Het for albino, axanthic, and ghost: triple het.
etc.

Can you do a segment on them, i know in the deadly python vid they were in there for a sec. i think they're the most beautiful snakes there are (specially if you get an orange headed one)
oh i have a desk job.

I work for a car manufacturer, the only part of it I can compare is putting the vehicles togother. All the different options make a different model.
I like the show, trying to explain genetics but maybe do something with showing the snakes instead of the crew or a punnet square like some others have suggested.
Love the pieds you had in the vid.

I'm in I.T. - used to be a programmer and currently replacing my boss as she is on maternity leave. I manage the Product Development department until she comes back.
I also agree with other posters - explaining genetics is easier to understand with regular Punnett squares rather than using faces from the crew... nice try though!

I work in a textbook warehouse, and no, it can't compare to your job. I put books in boxes for a few hours a day, and then once I'm done with that, I put more books in boxes. Maybe if it's a good day, I'll actually get to put some books in some boxes. That's the best!

Justin Guyer of Guyer Genetics
I'm breeding reptiles on the side and hoping to make that into a living but right now my job as a correctional officer is paying the bills.
So yeah, I get to do strip searches for a living. It gets pretty nasty when you get a guy who doesn't know how to whipe.
I think you can see why I want out of that line of work!

Hi Brian
