  • GREG HOWE!!!!!!!

  • Please step away from the bass guitar before someone gets hurt!

  • is that Jordan Rudess or Marty Friedman on 0:34?? hahaha

  • @MetaleiroKID LOL

  • dream theatre reacts to music...bands like Rush create music........BIG difference....theatre will never rival Rush in terms of success. longevity or songwriting.....good players though not very original....

  • man, Jordan is playing keyboards with his mind

  • The other guy was the Saiya Petrucci in 2006

  • wow petrucci's playing something with 4 strings

    god save us all

  • @FunkinlikeaDuncan dammit didn't notice that

    still

it's less than 48573, it must be so hard for him

  • @clokworkmusic uh thats a 5 string dude.

  • Cool vid but the camera work was pretty awful since most of it was either showing the back of JP's bass neck or MP whereas it'd have been much better to see the dude playing guitar since this was a one of a kind treat for him or at least show a little more JP playing bass.

  • There's something very strange about this video. I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it's the look on Myung's face when they show him looking at Petrucci playing bass. Or some unknown guest is playing guitar in front of Petrucci. Or is it Portnoy playing Peart's material? Very strange video, indeed

It might just be me or the bad quality of the video, but that drum riff at 3:55 doesn't sound quite right. It's an amazing beat and I can't believe Neil was only 22/23 when he wrote it!

  • @beeblebrux2112 Your right on the money at 3:55, hes not playing the ghost note in between the snare hits which makes a big difference. Ghost notes arnt Portnoys style just as its not really Neils style either but Neil plays them better and more often than Portnoy.Check out my 2 drum videos if you like.CHEERS!

  • It's weird watching videos of Mike in the band, and everyone having fun together. It's like watching old family videos after your parents divorce.

  • @dreamtheaterisbeast Oh, my bad. XD

  • @dreamtheaterisbeast That isn't The Camera Eye. That's Anthem from Fly By Night.

  • imagine being the bassist who isn't as good at bass as the guitarist (john p) is.

  • those drums sound awesooome

  • imagine being the guys tha play in front of peart? oh wait, they do that all the time. rtush 4ever

  • HAHAHAHA 2:19 Petrucci is thinking "God when is this going to end -_- "

  • I enjoyed that immensley! :)

  • this is incredible!

  • this must have been the soundcheck before a LTE-gig. No, I haven't read the comments beside this page, so if it has allready been stated then so be it.

  • lol getty lee comes in and is like MOVE OVER BITCH!

  • @btevoxboy6835 petrucci would own geddy on the bass and its not even his regular instrument

  • @kingcrimson234 u wish. lee is god on bass

  • thanks for posting this. :)

  • I love the flawless switch into Anthem at the end.

  • This was a real honor for us to open for Dream Theater. Our guitar player Chris Herin was kind of taken back when this jam all kind of happened. We just grabbed our video cameras and off they went. Impromptu. For John petrucci to play my bass was amazing. I wished I could have got in there and jammed as well but, the magic was not about me. I filmed it though. What a great memory. -Jeff Whittle (TILES Bass player)

  • Sorry Petrucci but I could have played it better lol. He sort of froze up. I know he could rape me though.

  • geddy lee plays bass like this and sings at the same time. wtf?

  • well it's a fact he does it better than me hahahaha

  • even though mike portnoy may be the second best drum god after neil no one can pull off this song

  • Portney is frign dynamite

  • What Bass???

  • come on people... stop bitching about the other guy, can´t you see it´s the same petrucci time warping, in the bass it´s petrucci 2000 and on guitar it´s petrucci 2004

  • @rodrigozamo lol...yes XD

  • w00t for anthem at the end!!

  • Portnoy is playing the wrong

  • @MikeShortlived No, he is playing his way. Not the wrong.

  • @SkyAce200 so... the wrong way.

  • @nattiep No, it's not the wrong way. The covers would be boring if everyone plays the same way. Even Rush plays this song different in each concert.

  • @SkyAce200 If it sucks, it's the wrong way.

  • next thing you know, petrucci will kick myung out of the band and play both guitar and bass at the same time during live performances

  • @MrKiller92 No way!!! Myung plays the same like Petrucci...with fingers...

  • @MrKiller92 do you actually think petrucci can play bass better than myung?

  • ...THEY ARE the son of RUSH....

  • Petrucci is done conquering the guitar world,,Bass players beware.....

  • Can't hear it really well, but it sounds like he's more following the guitar licks and not playing the bassline. BIG difference in this song, as any bassist will attest.

  • that was awesome,,i felt like i snuck into their session,,,,thanks for posting,,that was gre8.....

  • Oh Fuck, petrucci has no limits O_O

  • That looks like one of Tony Levin's basses, so I would assume this is from the Liquid Tension Experiment 2 jam sessions.

  • They did a really good job on this song. haha most rush covers suck.

  • that's just epic!

  • Sorry, John, but i can play it better :D

  • cant even hear petrucci's bass........

  • Shrapnel shredder turned fusion bore Greg Howe has the best cover of this tune on Ascend with Vitalij Kuprij on keys

  • man who's playing guitar is from progrock music band Tiles. And they also play on Tiles' gear ;)

  • The guitarist is from the band Tiles, a guy by the name of Chris Herin. They opened for DT on the European leg of the Scenes from a Memory tour. Tiles isn't as heavy as DT, but if you're a fan of Rush and Dream Theater, you could do yourself a favor and check these guys out. After all, they were invited to go to Europe by Portnoy, that's a pretty decent endorsement there, and Alex Lifeson played a guest spot on their last album, 2007's Fly Paper.

  • thats actually the guitarist from "Tiles" theyre a prog rock band from detroit that opened for them some time in the 90s

  • If you guys want to see Myung playing guitar, then go see the music video for The Silent Man :D

Myung is on electric guitar and JP on acoustic, its pretty sweet

  • Go Mike Go

  • Go Mike Go

  • omfg at 3:19 they cut the vid at the best part!

    Nice playing JP :)

  • ...That's why they have John Myung.

I do not wish to speak ill of John Petrucci, but I bet somewhere when this was made, John Myung is cringing underneath his emotionless face.

  • Doesn't come close at all.

  • An istrument? I think playing the bass is more fun than playing something that doesn't exist....maybe you were thinking of an instrument?? If so then the bass is an instrument, so what's going on?

  • i bet john shit himself

  • 1:15 - "That's not it!"

  • is this rush -lite?

  • Thankfully, John sticks to the guitar the rest of the time!

  • RUSH!!!!!

  • john doesnt look like he's having much fun

  • a guitarist playing bass. Your expecting him to be having fun.

  • Poor guy, having to play guitar for Petrucci, that must be tough!

But Petrucci really sucks playing bass, so maybe that makes him feel a little more confortable.

  • @rbx774 He's probably thinking "haha! silly mortal!"

  • Maybe, but although petrucci is very good technicaly, his phrasing is not that good, it's actually very cheesy, but his technique prowess is indeed undinyable(spelling?).

  • @rbx774 I think his phrasing is incredible. In fact my favorite Petrucci moments are when he's playing the slower more articulate and phrased licks.

  • That was fucking terrible! Get that guitar player out og there.

  • Kind of rough through the 7/8 part pretty damn good.

  • imagine being the guy who had to play guitar in front of john petrucci...

he pulls it off but still...

  • I'd be too overwhelmed to play right.

  • @mlceltic well to me i think that Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci are really cool guys and dont really care they are just jamming out....and to JoseEdo Mike Portnoy said it himself that Neil Peart was like the biggest influences in his youth as a drummer.

  • @LegendOfOldTrafford was just a joke mate, guy is a really talented guitarist !

  • @mlceltic yeah i would probably shit myself if i had to go through that chore

  • @mlceltic I always imagine having to play bass in Myung's place alongside Petrucci. And every time I do that, I always make a mistake that's very hearable. :D

  • @wladarthvader hahaha ! you'd feel his eyes burning into the back of your head.

  • I'm impressed by the guitar work. It's hard to get some of the subtle stuff from Liefson's solos to sound good.

  • I wish Dream Theater had for one CD Daniel Gildenlöw or Jorn Lande or Russel Allen as Guest Singer

But that will Never happen i know i like how Labrie sings on Systematic Chaos he never sang better

Or Another Cool Thing would be Liquid Tension Experiment III with Another Bass Player Maybe Billy Sheehan

    I think DT were best in 1998 and 1999 in Love S. f. a. M. and LTE I & II

but i like Train of Thought to

  • Train of Thought is not from LTE you fuck

  • I know That LTE and DT are two different projects but they are the same musicians involved except John Myung and James Labrie

I just wanted to say that i like Train of Thought why am i a Fuck then ?

    Whatever a Fuck is :)

  • @Zappafan1980 actually,if you read inside cover of LTE 1,MP tell a story about how he formed LTE.. and Billy was being considered as their bass player but can't make it due to a busy schedule.and the torch was given to Tony Levin who i believe is a legend in prog scene.

even MP said it himself that Billy is the greatest bass player he ever played with :D :D and doing that Who cover with Billy,Gilbert was a lot of fun :D :D

i got a chance to meet Billy when he was playing with Vai.Great Guy !

  • i wish they would have covered this on there new album

  • i think they wanted to do songs not very popular. i don't know about you, but i've never heard of Zebra's: Take your hand off my hair. but i aggree, a rush cover would be sick on the album.

  • Acutally im 17 and a huge Zebra fan and i went crazy when i found out they where covering Zebra's Take your Fingers From My Hair, i have a tshirt with them on it and nobody in my school knows who they are. If you like Rush and DT check out Zebras Debut you might enjoy it i did

  • who is the guest guitarist?

  • look 0:09 he looks like a muffin man!!

  • i stuck my dick in the mashed potatoes

type the in and hit audio preview

  • bad guitar loool

  • So wait. If he's playing Bass, who's playing lead?

  • Man I wish I had 1/10 the musical talent of either of these guys.

  • it doesn't suck horrible,

and these guys are just having fun,

see how easy portnoy plays Neil's parts...

guitar is just different, but good anyway,

as long as Labrie isn't singing everything is great.

Hail to Rush, hail to DT

  • dont talk shit about labrie. he is god

  • So...uh uh.... that's why you sent me a mail.

to tell me Labrie is god??

Well as the wise men spoke; religion will bring

    nothing but sadness.

    Dream on laddie.

  • sadness? i'm quite happy to be honest have you heard labrie in 1992 or 1993 during the images and words tour or the live in japan tours? he is the best singer youll hear in your life yes his voice has aged and hes damaged it a few times but hes still a damn site better than most singers nowdays

  • thats the guy from soundgarden and audioslave isn't it? he is a good singer but it always sounds like he struggles to hit any high notes

  • actually he seemed to have lost hhis singing voice years ago just look for audioslave chochise live on letterman and you'll know what i'm talking about. i have nothing against him just he isnt as good as labrie.

  • go fuck your mom retard..!!..

keep your mouth shut if u dnt know shit about music...

    fag

  • There's no sense or point of comparison btwn Cornell and LaBrie, my friend.

Either you enjoy boy of them or not, just keep ur mouth shut...

    Sorry...

  • Shut up? that would be perfect...Haha naa, you know bro I'm sorry...if you post a comment like yours you can expect one like mine in response. But take it as a joke, it never happened.

Let's just throw away useless wages and comparisons for the sake of music's zest.

    Keep it lock n'lol mate

    Cheers

  • such a tough guy to hide behind the internet like you are. If we met in person I'm pretty sure you'd be more averse to replying to MY comment. If you were at least armed with something intelligent to say you'd have typed something beyond YOUR four letter word vocabulary

  • WOW! What a great comeback! You are so original dude! I'm impressed...

Now shut your filthy mouth you moron! I just like to make of fun of people on the internet and it seems like I managed to hurt your little feelings! Eat a bag of shit and die...

  • shut up, no one cares for you assholes....

  • So dont tell him to shut up and you'll stop to contradict yourshelf

  • no one wants you do tho

  • God given eh?

Internet=/=USA btw, it's like saying it's illegal to mute somebody in an IRC chat lol

  • bullshit he's way better than cornell

  • cornell suck´s anyone can sing his songs all you have to do is scream

  • lol chris cornell has been terrible since the mid 90's, and after his solo album i wouldnt even mention his name in any kind of music discussion cause w/e he makes now, it isnt music.

  • uhm.. its just a reheasal, ok? easy now...

  • yea pretty sure they were just messing around.

  • oh dear

  • i dont remember the song that they play at the end...what´s the name of it ??

  • Anthem

  • Anthem off fly by night album (Rush)

  • Shooow

  • These boys did pretty good,(well, the drummer and guitarist anyway!) Petrucci is in unfamiliar territory, been there done that, so understood. It's apparent that DT's drummer grew up learning Rush for he nailed some accents and time signatures that have to be learned, not improvised. Love this song. The first money I ever made playing music, was La Villa! Good times and plenty of laughs!! :)

  • Is there anything Dream Theater can't play?

  • I hope they will cover morbid angel some day..

  • Probably the stupidest thing I've ever said^^^

  • That would be so epic lol

I bet Mike is the only one that would listen to that band though.

  • @JoseEdo Space-Dye Vest...... :(

  • @JoseEdo Jazz.

  • @Soul74 yeah not even dream theater can do it, they ahvent got the jazz touch

  • @FunK0Slap0GB Go listen to some of Liquid Tension Experiment's more "jazzy" songs, then tell me DT doesn't have the jazz touch :P

  • @Soul74 I donno, they did a REALLY jazz like improv instrumental at the end of hollow years during the DT show i seen last month, it was EPIC

  • @JoseEdo because there isn't any singing

  • @JoseEdo noup

  • Before any more retards comments on how this isn't as good as the original Rush version.....THEY WERE GOOFING AROUND!!! And why would you want an exact copy of the original anyways??

  • A perfect example that ability and speed don't automatically mean quality.

Alex' playing is far more emotional and of higher quality than this one.

  • errr.their just messin around in a sound check..

  • what is this video from?

  • Thanks for posting, even though Mike got the ride pattern and the change in the middle wrong and John wasn't able to duplicate Alex's solo. That's ok though, NOBODY can. Rush owns. :)

  • John petrucci is playing bass

I don't think there is anything alex can play that john can.

  • considering the fact that those guys wrote the song, i would hope they can pull it off better than DT

  • Rush didn't play Cygnus on Snakes and Arrows. Sorry. And I think, interestingly enough, Geddy's voice has stayed just as good as it was in the late 70s, if not gotten better. I mean he can still hit the high notes in Freewill.

  • tbh that was terrible.

  • great clip!

  • right before the bass

    solo what's that all about??!!

  • Dude! No kidding man! Bass solo is like the greatest part of that whole song!

  • It's the beginning of Anthem, from the Fly By Night album.

  • i saw these two bands live in my hometown rotterdam within a month its a shame i didn't die after that haha

  • I assume you know he plays part of Anthem after that excerpt from La Villa

  • Who's the guy playing the Guitar?. He's shown in the Hollow Years Video I thought it was another Keyboardist besides Sherenian, but seeing Jordan there I cannot say that anymore.

  • I think it might be Rich Chycki. He knows DT very well, is friends with J LaBrie, and was the recording engineer on Snakes and Arrows and did all the sound for the S&A DVD as well.

  • rush and DT two awesome band!

  • SICK. I found this on accident. Dream Theater is the best.

  • Now show me a video of Myung playing guitar!

  • That's easy, just look up The Silent Man. Then, search for Nightmare Cinema, and you can see him play the keyboards, Mike Portnoy play bass, and John Petrucci on drums.

  • that's a sick video, mike's kinda goofy on bass lol

  • buen video, petrucci tocando el bajo tambien es bueno, anthem es de mis favoritas
