I worked at a video store for 2 years. We had three of these (unfortunately, not cool like this one!), and they got a workout - we had LOTS of people who never rewound the tapes before bringing them back. I loved the claims of "Oh, I didn't have time," or "Oh, I forgot!" Just let the tape run out and the VCR handles it automatically - that's what I used to do with my own tapes and the ones I rented.
I used to have one of these back in the early 2000's. My little brother thought everything was a plaything and rolled it like a car from his big Hot Wheels collection. Since my old one broke I'd love to get a new one... that's because my VCR jams tapes if I try to rewind them then take them out!
3. Some people had VCRs whose rewind function wouldn't work (just ask anyone who have ever owned a Fisher VCR from the early-to-mid 1980s) but, instead of spending money to get the problem fixed, they just bought a VHS rewinder instead.
@Chenoholic88 "I don't really see what the point was of these machines since just about all VCRs have a rewind function."
1. Saves the deck from mechanical wear and tear.
2. If your VCR rewinds the cassette with the tape still threaded, using a rewinder will save the video heads from unnecessary wear. Some VCRs, such as a Panasonic AG-1980, have replacement heads that cost in excess of $150, even today.
However, most VHS rewinders made are bad as they're very hard on the tape.
With DVDs and Blu-Ray Disc, pretty much. I still have my VCRs, but only because I still have recordings that haven't been transferred to disc yet. When I watch movies from my collection, it's mainly from disc.
As for newer VCRs, they can still inflict wear on tape in normal use, especially in play as the tape still must have tension to travel correctly in the path and make proper contact with the heads. Also, I've found some newer transports tend to be rougher on the tape.
This was the greatest toy I ever had as a child.. yeah it was my parents.. but it also made a great Batmobile for my action figure... and thats how I broke it.. shoved batman in there too many times and it never closed again.. it worked for a while with duct tape but.. it was useless.
@ThePaddyjoejr1 'Here's Sour Sign' is a slogan made popular by the comedian Bill Engval. It is used when someone say or does something so stupid that, by law, they should be required to hold a sign that say's 'I'm Stupid' where ever they go. From the exchange between you and jrcstudios, I can deduce that you never knew about the gag-gift that came out over ten years ago when DVD's were replacing VHS's. By not knowing, he called you stupid and spoke as though handing you your sign back.
I've never heard of any VCR that didn't have the rewind function. The reason why rewinders were made was to prevent possible wear and tear from rewinding the tape within the VCR itself.
@reese4mestern Hmmm.. I have a VCR so old it has a wired remote... with rewind. I'd like to see a VCR with no rewind function. I'd buy it just for the excuse at the video rental store!

@Teraforce88
Actually some early camcorder would drain the battery when using the rewind feature. So it was easier to rewind separately before watching the tape.
Other camcorders were record only!
