kind of confusing with the titles, apparently the first novel is called " The Mallen Streak"; the second " The Mallen Girls"; and the third "The Mallen Litter"; so i dont really see where these two, Secret and Curse Mallen parts goes...
The reason Cookson writes about sexual violence, mental illness & poverty is because she lived it! Born illegitimate, a terrible stigma in the early 1900's, she was told her real mother was her sister, and was poor, abused and frightened as a child. She had a nervous & physical breakdown at 13, and couldn't use her legs. She had 4 miscarriages, neuralgia, psoriasis and telangiectasis (bleeding from the nose, stomach, bladder), and 5 heart attacks. And she had deep depression her entire life.
@mannixisle well said mate,my mother always read cookson, she told us as kids of the evil things people are capable of.Watching this,i now know why im a trade unionist and socialist
Honestly, i have no idea what was in Cookson's mind when she wrote this, but i think its her record when it comes to body count, everyone's bloody dyeing...And the ending is just so sudden, it is appropriate but just too abrupt...
15 streets was the first catherine cookson i watched when i iwas about 8, and have always been my fav, this is a good one but my brothers were glad when i had finished watching them all : )

i don't think that catherine cookson loves rape , she only denounces what is an habit among riche people.
