I have to say, though, when Britain gave Hong Kong back to China, Prince Charles admonished the Chinese officials of being Soviet-like. Why does the buck stop with Britain? The Spanish and Portuguese empires were Great before Britain even got started, and one can go back further and further and find evidence of ancient empires stealing, pillaging, and dominating the world. I do not think Grasse's book is not entirely incorrect. It is however, incomplete. I have to say, though, when Britain gave Hong Kong back to China, Prince Charles admonished the Chinese officials of being Soviet-like. I also do not like the Chinese Communists, but the Prince, however, forgot how the British forced China to open its ports in order to increase opium trade. Hong Kong was the consequence of that conflict.

Again I do not see your point. Originally there were three main French settlements in Canada. Don't forget Acadia. After the Acadian deportation by the British, the Acadians came to Noew Orleans and became Cajuns.
Also keep in mind that while we do not have an official policy governing languages, Louisiana is one of two or three unofficial bilingual states in the Union. They are the only state that still adheres to the old French legal system.

Yes, that is true. Famines are caused by nature, which nobody could deny. But the famines were at their very worst and killed the most people while the Raj presided. As they say in the US, the buck stops here. The failure to implement better agricultural technology to prevent the famines from the first place or to even implement disaster management for the citizens that had been affected by these disasters are directly the fault of the British Colonial Office and the British Raj regime.
