Micheal Mcdonald is a Great singer and songwriter...
Love the way that he does the first verse with the overlaying of words. Pity the rest of the song doesn't have a similar section in it. Great job though. What album is this on, does anyone know?
it doesn't matter what color your skin has, as long as love is the color of your heart. Michael's Music ist simply great, he is a wonderful composer, player, singer and man. fullstop.
Great rare performance!! Mike sounds great soo much soul!! Miss the Arsenio Hall show for performances and guests like this. Now all there is is this American idol crap.
No black person on the face of the earth has as much soul As MM. Or the talent for that matter. Black people need to recognize/realize that this can't ever be duplicated. So black people, you can sample his beat, but you'll never steal his voice.
@DoomCity202 How could someone from today steal something/anything from back then?? Wow, are you a delusional clown. Prove that it originated from the "cotton fields" which by the way is the grossest comparison i have ever heard. All music was created by white people......yes, even soul dummy. I don't have a complex I just state the truth. You need to learn your facts before you speak next time. But I digress.
@15scottie nope i stated my case now ill just let u sit up here & act like what i said was invalid for the sake of your stupid fucking argument fella...no way in the world u can sell that bullshit to anyone but ur dumb ass self...have fun buying ur own bullshit..mind games wont work when facts are present. play all u want but its like a game of solitaire..i asked u 3 ez questions, u answered none, just rebuttals like my dumb ass ex...id be a fucking fool to go any further with you...good luck
@DoomCity202 What was your case to begin with? You obviously have a inferiority complex. When I asked you for proof that it originated back when you say it has you came up with SQUAT! Produce some evidence, and then I'll shut up. But until then, you're a futile cunt. Give us something at least. Or stop wasting my valuable time.
@15scottie A lot (not all) of music was POPULARISED by white people but not created. To say that it originated in cotton fields is a bit far when you look at the structures of the music. It is too commercial now to draw comparisons with pure African-American working songs. Soul, fyi, is nothing more than a branch of rhythm and blues like rockabilly and tex-mex. But the main issue with what you are saying is the existence of Motown. Black people producing Black music for a black run company.
@jasonofaolain People please get a grip. This song was written by one of Michael's dear friends REVEREND PATRICK HENDERSON, who happens to be a black man, but I assure you that BOTH Michael AND Patrick would be disappointed to read about people making this a SKIN THING.
@deepfreezevideo2 1. I aint making this a race issue. I am merely giving a music history lesson to two people that obviously need it lest we hear more rubbish from them. 2. I agree. Elvis, MM, Michael Jackson and the Temptations are some of my favourite singers/performers and I am Irish!!!!! So I aint bringing race into it. Just making two people who are spouting rubbish look very silly!!!!!
Wow, what a rare treat. I've seen this great man thrice in concert and he never performed "Real Love," which I can understand because popularity-wise it wasn't a huge hit for the Doobies, but this is one of my absolute favorites nonetheless. I agree also that musicianship and pure talent like this is all but missing today.
Real Love was a top ten hit and the album One Step Closer went platnium. Compared to the Minute by Minute album that sold 3 million copies and wond 4 grammys your right.
doobieblood: Great point. "One Step Closer" would have indeed been a smash--if it weren't recorded by the Doobies, but comparitively speaking, it wasn't as huge as "Minute By Minute." I guess that's like comparing "Thriller" with "Bad." Both were huge, huge sellers but in comparison to one another, "Bad" looked like a "flop." Let me ask you: which do you like better, the Tom Johnston era ('72-'75) or the Michael McDonald era ('76-'80)? Fair comparison or not?
Hmsheppard that is a fair comparison. the first time i saw the doobies was in 1977 Johnston was no longer a doobie.
I would say the Mcdonald era. I was fortunate enought to see both lead singer on the reunion tour in 1995 at the Beacon Theatre in NYC! Greatest concert i've ever attended! 25 songs! Pat Simmons Yom Johnston and Michael McDonald on the same stage!!!
doobieblood: Lucky you!!! To see both Johnston & McDonald together. I'm so envious! I think I saw a similar concert on PBS in the late 90s. Still, to see it in person is fantastic. I think both Doobie eras were spectacular and different. Let me ask you this: do you have the catchy Patrick Simmons mildly successful solo single "So Wrong" from '83?! I have it on a compilation CD that came out about 10 years ago. I still love that song. Great guitar work on it. Thanks for the great response!
This is THE BEST!! I have to admit that M McD is THE best blue-eyed soul voice on the planet..love his soulful jazz arrangements too..you don't hear this kind of music anymore..energetic..authentic...done with passion.and spirit ...and his work is CONSISTENTLY good.(awesome sax ). Wow !!
hAHAHA...LETS NOT just aim at "niggas" ..we can aim at..no super fucking tight as shit pants...stupid looking hair..Faggot voice and lyrics..poor musical content..this is back when White boys wanted to have some soul..not just put out complete emotional trash. And yes no pants drooping gold teeth cap sideways gucci mayne shit either.
rockdiga: Yes, my brotha, no talent can apply to all colors. Remember the no-talent rainbow coalition: Vanilla Ice, Rockwell, Gerardo (of "Rico Suave" shame...) and William Jung.
@ssmarilyn I know your comment is quite old, however, he is not in a rap or hip hop video. Black men normally do that in rap videos, so what you said was a little rude. (No offense). The singers of classic R&B-(black men and women) don't represent themselves negatively whereas others in terrible music videos do.
@MusicLoverForever1 ahh...I got what the poster said and your posting was quite offensive to black people. He would be in the black groove category because he has git what it takes in the soul category. Something that you just don't get and apparently never will get. Now you can take your foot out of your mouth.
@ssmarilyn ...this guy is such a sultry class act...a voice like smoooth silk...love him since 1970 tillnow...he is a mans man....a handsome and seasoned artist...i'm still in love with him....i'm 51 now and will listen till i die..nice to see someone else...thinks he is a class act...
Its sad today that image > talent.. for years it was about the better music, the better voices.. now its about who can put together a balanced package.. sad
i forgot how some songwriters just get it right and can cut the rest of to the bone with just a flick of pen. of course michael gets our attention to listen to every single note and word. GOD BLESS YA!!
I think his greatest performances were on Livin On THe Fault Line. You're Made That Way, Nothin But A Heartache and There's A Light. Great Mike and the Doobie songs!!!
This song takes me back to when great music was made not manufactured. For any Baby Boomer we had great times from the music of this era. Michael since your days with the Doobie Bros, thank you for creating timeless music.
I couldn't agree with you more. I dont know what is going on with music now adays. I was just a toddler when the Doobies were together and they are apart of my music upbringing. Being a musician myself, I want to bring back this special feeling and emotion and intensity in my own music.. *sighs* Im so nostalgic.. I miss those days
Man I just love this song..one of my all time favorite angst love songs. The lyrics, music and Michael just owns this song--it moves me whenever I hear it
Happy Birthday Michael xx

No black person on the face of the earth has as much soul As MM. Or the talent for that matter. Black people need to recognize/realize that this can't ever be duplicated. So black people, you can sample his beat, but you'll never steal his voice.

@"15 year old Scottie" That may be the dumbest shit EVER on Youtube.
Where did soul originate? hint: hot cotton fields
Or....the term soul music is related 2 who ? hint: sun blessed people
Who would u say was the very first soul artist was? hint: not Elvis
Here's ur chance 2 make up more bold face lies that no 1 will cosign.
Use some other shit 2 support ur fake superiority complex.
Music is universal Clown!!!
Now go do a search for Donny Hathaway and then lets her that bullshit your talking.
DoomCity202 1 year ago
@DoomCity202 How could someone from today steal something/anything from back then?? Wow, are you a delusional clown. Prove that it originated from the "cotton fields" which by the way is the grossest comparison i have ever heard. All music was created by white people......yes, even soul dummy. I don't have a complex I just state the truth. You need to learn your facts before you speak next time. But I digress.
15scottie 1 year ago
@15scottie nope i stated my case now ill just let u sit up here & act like what i said was invalid for the sake of your stupid fucking argument fella...no way in the world u can sell that bullshit to anyone but ur dumb ass self...have fun buying ur own bullshit..mind games wont work when facts are present. play all u want but its like a game of solitaire..i asked u 3 ez questions, u answered none, just rebuttals like my dumb ass ex...id be a fucking fool to go any further with you...good luck
DoomCity202 1 year ago
@DoomCity202 What was your case to begin with? You obviously have a inferiority complex. When I asked you for proof that it originated back when you say it has you came up with SQUAT! Produce some evidence, and then I'll shut up. But until then, you're a futile cunt. Give us something at least. Or stop wasting my valuable time.
15scottie 1 year ago
@15scottie A lot (not all) of music was POPULARISED by white people but not created. To say that it originated in cotton fields is a bit far when you look at the structures of the music. It is too commercial now to draw comparisons with pure African-American working songs. Soul, fyi, is nothing more than a branch of rhythm and blues like rockabilly and tex-mex. But the main issue with what you are saying is the existence of Motown. Black people producing Black music for a black run company.
jasonofaolain 1 year ago
@jasonofaolain People please get a grip. This song was written by one of Michael's dear friends REVEREND PATRICK HENDERSON, who happens to be a black man, but I assure you that BOTH Michael AND Patrick would be disappointed to read about people making this a SKIN THING.
Wake up, we all bleed RED.

I agree also that musicianship and pure talent like this is all but missing today.
hmsheppard 2 years ago 3
Real Love was a top ten hit and the album One Step Closer went platnium. Compared to the Minute by Minute album that sold 3 million copies and wond 4 grammys your right.
doobieblood 2 years ago
doobieblood: Great point. Fair comparison or not?
hmsheppard 2 years ago
Hmsheppard that is a fair comparison. the first time i saw the doobies was in 1977 Johnston was no longer a doobie.
I would say the Mcdonald era. I was fortunate enought to see both lead singer on the reunion tour in 1995 at the Beacon Theatre in NYC! Greatest concert i've ever attended! 25 songs! Pat Simmons Yom Johnston and Michael McDonald on the same stage!!!
doobieblood 2 years ago
doobieblood: Lucky you!!!

Wow !!

rockdiga: Yes, my brotha, no talent can apply to all colors. Remember the no-talent rainbow coalition: Vanilla Ice, Rockwell, Gerardo (of "Rico Suave" shame...) and William Jung.

@ssmarilyn you got that right..straight out music
linee2009 1 year ago
@ssmarilyn I know your comment is quite old, however, he is not in a rap or hip hop video. Black men normally do that in rap videos, so what you said was a little rude. (No offense). The singers of classic R&B-(black men and women) don't represent themselves negatively whereas others in terrible music videos do.
MusicLoverForever1 1 year ago
@MusicLoverForever1 ahh...I got what the poster said and your posting was quite offensive to black people. He would be in the black groove category because he has git what it takes in the soul category. Something that you just don't get and apparently never will get. Now you can take your foot out of your mouth.
