nah ....those old dudes decide that humanity should shead their individual natures seperated by the AT fields...and become one being. People can choose to return to their seperate bodies. Shinji rejects this and that is why the end is like it is. But this whole story is a very abstract allegory so it can be taken many ways I guess.

thats interesting, that jerking off reference at the end O.O hadn't really realized, was thinking the whole time Shinji was crying, i don't think he was jerking off, still crying still, but its left open. and i think i finally get the message at the end, where Asuka says disgusting, like this is the last of Man, and he's a complete wimp who doesn't man up. is a dark film with tons of layers. I love the creepy planet of the Apes music, Very well done, I love both franchises, :) very well done :)

you know... i dont see why everyone thinks shinji is jerking it. when it shows him crying over asuka (right after he removes his hands) BOTH shoulders are quivering. thus. crying. when she says how disgusting. his arms are also shown on either side of her. I think they simply have her say "how disgusting" as he cried all over her. is basically weak as pudding. and shes going to be stuck with the opposite of manliness in her eyes =D

Second,yeah I always wondered why they changed the dialouge in the dub from "I feel sick" to "How disgusting." Those things could have two different meanings depending on the situatuion.

The real tragedy here is that's the changed dub ending, it ruins the subtlety and character buildup for the entire series.

@Krakolio Are you serious? the whole point of the series was people trying to make Shinji into a weapon/animal, and him resisting.

The same plot of PotA when the apes wanted to bring Heston in line with their idea of what a "human" is.

Albeit, Evangelion has a Jesus figure, and Planet had a Darwin figure, they still both cover thinking creatures trying to define reality, by force. And both endings have the same satiric/emotional punch.
