Good night a livin?? I'm impressed...really impressed! This comin from a redneck! That is unbelievable and the simplicity is amazing. Well, Deb's lost her vacuum cleaner...
How do you come up with these things?? We so appreciate bein around all you guys and the ideas and knowledge shared. This one is a keeper...now, I'm wonderin bout a redneck vasectomy?? LOL!!
A #10 holds 3 quarts. Walmart sells 3 mason jars for about $2.50 for 3. a tilla food saver jar sealer and good vacuum pump will give a EXTREMELY GOOD VACUUM. and the jars are plenty re-usable and you do not have to open or fill a whole plus you see what you got and the process is easy, simple, & proven..
use your #10 cans for starting fruit trees.Just my advice... no offense meant...
@UserAccountDenied Thanks, no offense taken. I have about 3,000 jars, 2 vacuum sealers and all the fancy attachments. I'm worried about the people out there who don't have the means to get those things. Hopefully a hand full of seeds, a few pieces of junk and a few saved jars or cans can be a step towards self reliance. It's probably not the best but it's better than nothing.
@UserAccountDenied I don't want to risk my food on glass, it breaks too easy. Its too heavy for my flimsy shelves. I also get most my food in cans, so it would be handy to just reuse cans rather then spend money on jars.
Atmospheric pressure is about 14 pounds per square inch. If you pulled a "real" vacuum, the the container would have 14 pounds pressure on Evey square inch. On long term storage you want ALL the air out because you want all the oxygen out. I personally do not believe there is much of a vacuum, I mean if you achieved a 20% air evacuation, you would still have 80% of the oxygen left.. To achieve a real vacuum, you need a vacuum pump designed for complete evacuation. Harbor freight $100.
@UserAccountDenied getting all the air out is not necessory. For 10cents you can buy an oxygen absorber, drop it in your jar, put on the lid, and it will pull a light vacume by absorbing the oxygen. As oxygen is the only problem you dont need all the air out just the oxygen. Pulling a vacume also removes most of the humidity, which causes spoilage.
McGyver ain't got nothin' on you!! Love that idea! I've had to resort to doing something just like that with my regular mouth canning jars when I do dehydrated foods because the handy-dandy lid attachment for the food sealer doesn't do the job. The wide mouth works fine, but the regular jars I have to put into one of the sealer camisters to get a seal now...whatever works! Where there's a will - there's a way!! That also works for getting the air out of the mylar bags before you seal them.
You did it!!! Great job. What an inventive solution!!! I don't care what they say, Necessity is NOT the Mother of Invention! I know the Mother of Invention... and her name is ImStillWorkin!
since they have changed the laws about air conditioning service. There is a large quantity of equipment that is not legal to use. so there are vacuum pumps sitting around that will pull 30 inches of vacuum but will not recycle refridgerant. I have one sitting in my sideshed.
You need to write a book. That brain of yours needs to be studied. You are sooooooooo amazing. Thanks you from the bottom of my heart for all your brainstorming. I would like to order a set of cd's with all your video's please.
You know if you poke a small hole in the top of the caning lid or even use pickle jar put a small pice of electrical tape over the hole then hit it with your rubber home made vac hose atachment and there u goes. vac sealer works good !
This is AWESOME. I've gotten so tired of having to rip and run all over and try and find vacuum-sealer attachments. You can get a baster everywhere. :)
WELL HOT DAMN!!! I bought a vacuum sealer at our local thrift store and it works great but I wanted to vacuum some jars......thanks for showing me how to do that!!!!!! A great big hug (((()))) to you ;)
One more thing. We are going to be hurting (business wise) if gas goes to $5:00 a gallon. We won't be able to travel. so all of these tips I am learning are going to come in handy.
So cool. Glad to see you got it. I am going to try to find one of those coolers at a yard sale. Keep those videos comin. Were ggoing to get through this (tough times) together one video at a time.
@gardennana3453 I was real tempted to buy a little iron while I was on that website. It looks something like a curling iron with a pointed tipped iron on the end. It's used to iron tedious stuff like appliques. Do you have one and do you think it would get hot enough to seal mylar bags?
@imstillworkin the heating element under the hot plate section of a drip coffee maker could be straightened out to form a plastic bag sealer. it just depends on what part of the coffee maker breaks first. may of mine blow out the tube from the element up to the drip section. you have to cut the plastic to get at the parts for repair so it is easier to replace it entirely. you could get those parts for free.
Ever since your first post about sealing the cans I have been trying to come up with ideas on how to make the #10 can work. Everyday I come home with new ideas and a different shopping list for my husband. I cant wait to see his face tonight when I tell him to scratch the old shopping list (last night) of a styrofoam cooler, liquid leading and a pond hose.... now I need a plastic cooler, a turkey baster, some liquid leading and my handheld vacuum. HAHAHAHA you are a true MrsGyver. THANK YOU!
@imasurvivornthriver You should be able to find it in any craft store. If not, they sell it online. It doesn't cost much, something like $5 per bottle and a little goes a long way.
I bet nasa does the same thing on the space station. lol. One time when the grid went down for days, my dad milked cows with vacuum from the tractor intake manifold.
@lauriegirl2 I'm so glad you told me about the turkey baster. I can't believe I didn't think about it since I was using the bulb end of it. There's definitely more than one way to skin a cat. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Great idea!!!!
