If anyone's considering watching this online, in parts, with low resolution, don't. This needs to be seen clearly and continuously for the full effect.
I love how Gaspar Noe aims to show human suffering/condition that eats away at us in our daily lives. We are in this incoherent entity, where space is endless and we are a most vulnerable being. Noe plays off that universal fear and reality. That is indicative in the sense that some people embrace it, and some are horrified.
This movie really did scar me and leave me an emotional mess. But for a film to be able to do that to someone is so amazing, this is the first movie I have ever watched that I could "feel" like it was real and it was happening to me. The most AMAZING piece of cinimatic art I have EVER seen!
The movie is basically trying to tell you to live a good life/ don't do things you may end up regretting.
DMT is the drug he smokes in the first sequence. It is found naturally in humans and said to be released when people die.
When people see the "light at the end of the tunnel", or have near death experiences that cause their lives to "flash before their eyes" it's because of this chemical.
His friend even mentions this at one point, and goes on to add that the Tibetan Book Of The Dead sa
This film is incredible. It's emotionally, physically, and spiritually draining, but absolutely incredible nonetheless. Gaspar Noe is quickly becoming my favorite "new" director. His films haunt you. They scar you. They stay with you. I hope to be able to see this on a large screen one day. Sadly, I was only able to watch it at home on my widescreen.
@louisunderwood You put my exact feelings into words perfectly there. I felt so damn drained after I saw it. I want to see it a second time later, but I'm just not ready yet. :)
@Vesters1 gaspar noe has always all the admiration of the press, at least in my country n in hispanic world, all the reviews that i read: 90% says all the stuff he does is fuckin amazin... I think the story is good but the movie is long like a pain, n has to much sex, a story like that doesnt need naked gals in slutty lingerie all the movie, so he used that resource to keep us awake.
I don't think the story was good at all. There was no story. Plenty of flying around the place from one inconsequential scene to another, so that we could watch characters we don't like doing things we don't care about. At least all that flying around enabled Noe to pad out the running time, when simple cuts from scene to scene would have made it more obvious how empty the thing was.
@textthing I think that the story is not empty but is not easy to tell to the public. I liked the story coz it is about the book of the dead n about life after death n reincarnation.. so it is somethin "spiritual", "religious" It is not easy to show... sorry for my crappy english
I know what you're saying. There is a way to make a story like that, but it's possible to make it interesting and involving. What happens in first 11 minutes of this film is that someone's sister goes to work, and he gets high. Most movies are well into their first act by that time.
@textthing Noe is all flash, no substance. He pounds you with technique (in fact, he overwhelms you with it) but if you take away the technique, you realise how shallow and empty his films are (not just Void).
Thank you. In fact, some of the techniques he uses could make for dazzling film-making if they served a purpose, such as serving a proper script with interesting events and characters we're given reasons to care about. Unfortunately, we're expected to be wowed by spinning cameras, and that's not good enough.
@textthing All of his films are like that. Irreversible had all those wild, spinning, sideways camera moves, which ultimately didn't mean anything consider how hollow the film was. Also Gaspar likes to use shock tactics on this films to cover their essential emptiness.
@woolymurmur have you seen this whole movie though? it's so much more than these visuals. it has true depth and absolutely amazing. these effects tie into the story and aren't just there as filler
it would be better if i would make it full movie but iam not the director to decide that.. i guess i was the first in make 11 minutes...there is a lot of fake videos about acid tripp beware...try found a good theatre, good screen ,good audio and enjoy full movie there cause the director dreamed his movie with angles for big screen(hope someday decide to do 3 d version)...this movie is like google earth after take pills...very visual...and the point of view is very indie movie not hollywood...
I love this movie so much i watch the trailer every day
I'd watch the movie daily, but as 'louisunderwood' says, too emotionaly draining
fucking brilliant
