Bill Haley and Fats Domino saved rock and roll. This song opened for the movie Blackboard Jungle The song and movie scared the crap out of a lot of parents.
European fans rioted when Bill Haley and the band toured about this time.
When ever I watch this, or listen to this, I think to myself, what the hell happened to this kind of music? Now all I hear is shit these days, love, money and sex. What happened to singing about the little things? Like the colour yellow or clocks or even flowers? I like this music. And the dancing for Rock 'n' Roll with all the twirls and spins and clapping. That was better. (:
thats how the music should be now... techno is crap =S rock n roll is god ! @@ =D=D p.s i love it i actually dance'd jitterbug in front of 1k ppl when we where dancing to it =)
When my son was born just over two years ago this was the first song he heard on our way home from the hospital. My favorite song of all. As fresh today as it was way back when it was first recorded.
I thought it would be a good start to life. Was I wrong?
Bill Haley and His Comets were among the first rock groups to appear on Ed's show (still known as "TOAST OF THE TOWN" when this aired in August of '55). The only reason he booked them was because the song had become #1, due to its inclusion on the soundtrack (under the opening titles) of MGM's "The Blackboard Jungle" that summer. Whatever Sullivan may have personally thought of "rock and roll" at that time didn't matter; if an act or song was HOT, he made sure they appeared on his show first.
lake40...if this gave birth to rock n roll what was happenning to all those black blues musicians...boogie woogie players before this and Antoine Domino? Think deep now.
If there's any guess that rock n' roll was an amalgamation of country, R&B and Big Band pop - dig those instruments! A steel guitar, a sax and an accordian.
The sound still had some stripping to do to get down to guitar, drum and doghouse bass.
This was before Elvis. To me this is the first ROCK song ever. Yes I know about Little Richard also. But this song was truly guitar drivin with the feel of rock unlike any other song before Elvis.
Yes Yamsha81 Elvis started in '54. But I meant to say that Elvis' first REAL rock and roll song Jailhouse Rock was released as a single in February 1956. Before that he sang rockabiliy music like Blue Moon of Kentucky and That's Alright Mama. It's like the band Cream. They started a year before Jimi Hendrix. But, Hendrix made the first ever heavy metal song with the song Purple Haze. Later in that same year in 1967 Cream came out with White Room the 2nd heavy metal song. See my point ?
Guitar is shreddin' okay but you really can't beat the lick played on the original version of the tune.
A one of a kind rock and roll solo by Danny Cedrone. Worth looking up. Shame that he passed away before he could ever know how big that song would become.
Bill was 103 years old when he recorded this. Not bad for an old guy.
