I used to bike everywhere when I lived there back in the 90s. After a whole year, on my second to last day in Japan I had the bike stolen when I left it in Hirakata shi for the day to take the train into Kyoto. Bummer! The bike belonged to the host family I was staying with...I'd taken such good care of it the whole time before that.
