It's always good to record a stop so you can have evidence of your own in the case of police misconduct. Don't allow your city or state lawmakers to create laws inhibiting your right to protect yourself in this regard. Many cops will tell you to turn off your recording device and make it sound like it's against the law to record them. If you contact your local ACLU you could get material that will help you in such encounters. Police should not be the only ones recording stops.

That means he lives in a Southern East Coast state. Things don't work there the way they do anywhere else. If they believe you're guilty, then you ARE, no matter what evidence you may have. When a cop does something wrong, it is indeed more publicized..... but police officers have to be held to a higher standaed of conduct because of the power they have. If I'm accused of a crime by a police officer, in the absence of evidence, the judge will take the officer's word 90% of the time. In my town, police corruption is rampant. People are afraid of them. That's why it's important to hammer the one's that are caught... To restore people's confidence in police.

People where I live have stolen police cruisers (it's happened a few times), and they impersonate cops to get a woman to step out of her vehicle. Then they abduct, rape or kill her. Sometimes all 3.

I have told my wife this and I will also suggest it to you. "IF" you are being pulled over call 911 and inform them that yuo have an officer behind you and tell them where you are and they will verify that it is a real cop stopping you. PUt on your hazzard lights and slow down but don't pull over until verification of a valid stop and officer.

Vicki, your concern is totally legit and smart on your part and officers are aware of this. If something makes you uneasy during a stop, respectfully request to phone the local dispatch, stating your concern to the officer, and he should have no problem with you doing so. Also, pulling over into a populated, well lit area is a good idea.

I used to live in LA, but I have a friend who was an LA police officer. He lives in Arizona now and works in the Phoenix area.

I don't think they should wait until terrible things happen to start screening potential police officers, but that appears to be the way everything in this country is done.

Not all the time. if the officer has cuase that you are carrying illegal items such as drugs or weapons. they may request a drug sniffing dog or search. in most cases if they spot something illegal in the car they will search it without consent.
