Ya, the needles actually do wear out after about 1-2 plays. I have heard something about you can substitute the needle with a cactus needle, however I'm not suggesting it...
It is a good collection I like it. I have a good collection of Gramophone and record player, am a mechanic of the gramophones If you r interested please contact me my mobile no +919995017065
@monty78pig how hard does the needle pushes on the record? I want to know because it is so hard that you have to change it everytime you play a record!
amazing how loud they are, but imagine playing an old record on an amplified modern player, it would be massively loud because its designed for smaller grooves unlike the oldies that had big grooves i imagine.
How can it be "massively loud" when an amplified modern player has a volume control? Wonderful results can be obtained from 78s on sympathetic equipment capable of using the necessary equalisation used by various manufacturers.
-Superb machine great sound a master piece . I collect 78 records i have a vast collection but have never been able to obtain 1 of these old machines to play them on . if any1 has any to sell please leave me a message
@shieldsguy I am a collector, I have 17 machines and over 300 records of all types. I strongly recommend the site: collectors world west dot com, they have a great choice of machines at great prices.
@shieldsguy Don't use one of these they'll destroy your shellac records (especially later ones). Buy a proper setup with a turntable that can do 78 rpm, a decent cartridge such as a shure SM78 and a flat level pre-amp. Steel needles will ruin your collection.
Sorry, but steel needles do not themselves ruin 78s. Badly-adjusted (or indifferently made) gramophones and not changing the needle each side are the offenders. I have been collecting gramophones and 78s for well over 40 years and have NEVER worn out a record by playing it acoustically. Contrary to popular belief, it is the record that wears the needle, which when worn and not changed can damage the groove. Never use a loud tone needle and use the best gramophones.
So play them on a modern stereo - they'll sound great ! And the light tone-arm, the record will appreciate.
By the way, "His Master's Voice" was the dog listening to a recording of his DEAD master, who was lying in a closed coffin. The dog and the phonograph were both perched on the coffin llid ! Somebody said that the theme was macabre, so the coffin was left out of the final design.
Ah! The Art-Deco detailing is BREATHTAKING on this machine! I positively love gramophones. I have...a 1920's HMV portable, and I love it to pieces. Not literally of course...heh heh.
hi great video I love all your machines I have a columbia gramophone simaler to that one but it has the brass speaker thing I was wondering if you could give me a ball park figure of what its worth I havent got a clue?
Modern music stinks

do new records work on gramophones??
jellybones423 4 months ago
@jellybones423 No, the grooves are not wide enough and vinyl is too soft, that steel needle will go right through!
