  • Short arms, big stomach; bar doesn't travel very far. I have 6% BF and a 6'5 wing span; benching is hard as balls for me.

  • @TheYouwontgetit It's not about that. It's about individual variation; he only has enough muscle mass to move it the set distance that his body allows him. His elbows barely get parallel before the bar hits his chest, if they even do get parallel; as opposed to the majority of us whose range of motion is much larger and our elbows go way below parallel. I guess what you're asking me is; if I put a 6inch trampoline on my chest, could I do a lot of weight? Yes, yes I could.

  • snap.. his spine..? :-O by arching his back a bit while benching? I have seen extreme arches, but this is far from it. Bare in mind that this gentleman presses around 460 lbs in this clip.. For twelve reps. Equipped competition PR is 345,5 kg (~760lbs)

  • Yes. Anyone can tell beginners what to think of when lifting but when you start to give beginners advice to people who hold records it gets a bit silly.

  • Because I feel that you overestimate the impact it has on your spine.

  • I should think so but with 210kg ontop or your body, your spine should be parallel to the floor! I understand that some benchers bend their back slightly to distribute the weight but taking your bum off the bench is dangerous!

    If you fracture your spine, your career is over and if you break it, your paralised.

    There is nothing to overestimate when it comes to the spine.

    Many benchers use belts simply to align their back and support their spine.

  • Professional athletes take risks. Also, arching in the benchpress has very seldom(if ever) been the cause of a major, even a minor back injury.
