  • There is no doubt of it: Carson was a genius at what he did. and he gave his whole life to those 90 minutes of late night TV. he loved it more than anything.

  • Damn you Blizzard :l

  • Johnny Carson was the best hands down. Nothing on TV will ever compare! He and Ed McMahon were the perfect couple. They were the funniest when the jokes bombed. Just classic tv of which we will never see the likes of again. What great memories I miss so much.

  • NEVER before ,NEVER since ,NEVER again!!! a Mr. Carson !!!!

  • I liked Johnny Carson better than David Letterman.

  • Johnny was the man - PERIOD! The current current list of late night pretenders aren't fit to wash Johnny's socks.

  • Great vid except for that fucking moron bush.

  • @pm512 You're drunk,Barack-go home

  • Johnny!!!! :((((((((((

  • Interesting statistics at 1:38

  • I doubt George Bush actually wrote that tribute. He probably didn't even know what the words meant.

  • 2 days in television that i'm old enough to know that brought me to tears. the day he walked off the stage for the last time, and when this came on that morning that he died.

  • The today show is a joke indeed!

  • Johnny Carson's birthday should be a national holiday.

    Seriously.

  • @FuckYouLetMeLogIn Agreed. It really should be. He's bigger than anyone in the country. And large parts of the world around.

  • I having the pleasure of being 47, got to grow up watching Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon on the Tonight Show. Johnny Carson died 2 weeks after my mom died. A sad time. Thanks for the memories JC

  • He died in January 2005? I thought it was later than that--can't believe it's been 5 years. Johnny was an institution, he took the Tonight Show to new heights, everyone one who could stay up late in the 1960s and 1970s watched him. He was truly one of a kind and will never be replaced. RIP Johnny

  • @wlhardy Took it to new heights? I don't think many even know about Steve Allen and Jack Paar. Maybe a few. Maybe a few are old enough to remember, others have read about it. But 30 years - over 30 years - is a long time. That's an institution. Carson *is* the Tonight Show. He was #1 four times as long as a president. He saw five presidents through office. No one is bigger.

  • Ive tried and tried and tried to watch late night TV, but it all sucks since Mr Johnny Carson stopped doing late night.

  • One of the things I miss most is my father who passed away, laughing until he cried at Johnny Carson. I loved Johnny too and cried at his passing. A giant in television that will NEVER be matched.

  • @TiminPhoenix His comedy doesn't hold up that well now? Are you on drugs? Did you get an anvil dropped on your skull?

  • @TiminPhoenix Biggest SOB? Where the FUCK do you pull this stuff? Out from your ARSE? You're a scum-sucking bottom-dwelling troll. How dare you!

  • i cried when i watched this. it's terrible that my generation doesn't appreciate the work of johnny carson. i don't even think that my friends knew who he was. people watch dave and leno and they think it's comedy. the only person who can even minorly compare is craig ferguson.

  • Johnny Carson is truely a legend and I believe Jay Leno was the right choice to succeed him as host of the Tonight Show.

As for NBC bringing in Conan to host the show... That would be the same as replacing Sidney Crosby with a guy that can't skate.

Johnny is up in Heaven smiling down on us and I am confident that he watches both Leno and Letterman but like me deleted the first Tonight Shiw hosted by Conan The Tonight Show Destroyer.

  • Johnny Carson was a class act, so true!

I watched him my whole childhood. RIP Johnny

  • I want to see the Ed McMahon and Dick Cavett portion of this program!

  • so sad

  • Comment removed

  • I was never a fan of Conan and never thought he was funny....but I do think he was done dirty by NBC.....PS for this video...we all MISS Johnny

  • Well all this crap that NBC put the Tonight show overshadowed any possible tributes to Johnny Carson

  • i know i can't believe whats going on

  • conan's a class act too. he really is the carson of our generation( R.I.P johnny)

  • I totally agree w/kylie that Conan's been a class act too, and showed respect & concern for the legacy of The Tonight Show.

BUT, sorry, we just don't have any Carson of this generation, which is such a shame. If you combine Leno & Conan at their best they don't hold a candle to Carson. Letterman, who was Carson's choice to suceed him, has his moments.

Simply put, no one is in Carson's league. I'd rather watch his reruns then the drek on today. His humor is still far funnier!!

  • And Letterman would be the first to admit that no one is anything like Johnny was and that all everyone's doing these days is trying to basically imitate Johnny.

  • @VeryFineWhine absolutely he will be missed

  • Nikoh04, It might be Bette Midler singing "One for my Baby" I think she did that on his last tonight show.

  • @zwink9 Bette Midler was on Carson's next to last show. He had no guests on the final show.

  • If he was Alive He would have put thoes Bitches at NBC in Check!!!

  • 5 yrs ago today.

  • It's been five years since your last goodbye. Oh Johnny, if you could see what Jay is doing now.

  • Mr Carson was a star, BUT also he was a reg man, and that is how any guest felt when they where on the show he was cool with ANY type of person. Johnny! We will always forever miss you, R.I.P. ( a fan)

  • johnny is the man, does anyone know what song was playing in the beginning of his video montage?

  • we'll be thinking of you tomorrow , johnny!

  • Carson exuded class, humor and an ability to feel like an old friend. Leno, Conan, Letterman etc... only have MAYBE one of those. Some...not even that. I feel sorry for the generation that will never know how good late night T.V. could be. (But how lucky are we, that witnessed it... and sad that it ended?) R.I.P. Johnny and Ed

  • I'm not one to get emotionally attached to celebs; but with Carson, I felt as though I'd lost a family member. I loved this man. Me and my grandmother would watch him obsessively during the 70s when I was a kid. He had enough wit, humor, and confidence in himself to allow his guests to shine and connect with his audience; whereas most of today's hosts spend the entire interviews trying to outsmart their own guests and make cutesy jokes at their expense. Unfortunately, Johnny's gone forever.

  • Almost cried......during an interview Letterman said that every single late night host today was secretly trying to replicate what Johnny Carson had done during his Tonight Show reign

  • We will probably never see another Johhny; we will probably never see another Ed.

But we will DEFINITELY NOT SEE another Johnny AND Ed.

They were the perfect Late Night pair...

I love David Letterman, and I'm happy to know when he retires some sad day I'll have Craig Ferguson, who I love and think is probably the most electric personality on TV today, to fall back on.

But Johnny and Ed... no, that'll never happen again.

  • @obiwanobiwan13 I couldn't have said it better. I agree with you 1,000,000%. Thank God for Craig Ferguson.

  • NOBODY will ever replace the king of late night.

  • I'm surprised Katy & Matt didnt blame Johnny's death on President Bush.

  • We'll be happy to do that if it'll make you feel better...

  • There are many duos in hollywood. But the bottomline is: JOHNNY CARSON AND ED MCMAHON WERE, AND STILL ARE THE BEST DUO IN THE HISTORY OF HOLLYWOOD!!!!! R.I.P JOHNNY AND ED!

  • Johnny is a national treasure. Thank you so much Johnny. You and David letterman gave me my sense of humor.

  • legend.

  • Since Johnny retired, I have watched approximately forty minutes of late-night television. I still miss Johnny.

  • AMEN. There will never, ever be another. Not even close.

  • Icon

  • carson guest starred on the simpsons episode krusty get cancelled.

  • Comment removed

  • There will never be another Johnny Carson. He was truly one in millions.

  • R.I.P johnny carson and ed mcmahon , carson and his sidekick are in heaven now.

  • Don't forget Tommy Newsom.

  • and God has asked them to do a Tonight Show up there now!

  • u'll always b d best johnny

  • Still miss ya Johnny. Rest in peace.

  • johnny we miss you thank you for being you.

  • I came here because I still miss Johny Carson. I like the others in late night but there will never be a replacement for Johnny. When I see clips of him it just brings me to happier times when I was younger and there were more people around that I loved. I wish we could travel time because I will always be visiting those days of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and hope to see the old greats that he had on all the time. I'm getting too old I guess. I hope to see him in heaven when I go.

  • Did you see the look on Katie Couric's face when Matt Lauer said she was 35 years old?! LMAO! (See marker 4:25) I bet she attacked him backstage. LOL

  • Still hard to believe his last appearance on TV was a brief visit to the David Letterman show in 1994, 2 years after his retirement. And the crowd response was so overwhelming and unending the typical humble Johnny just couldn't get them to settle down so, almost embarrassed by the adulation just got up with a smile and shook Dave's hand and walked off the set, smiling and waving to the audience. It's amazing how to this day he is so missed and is STILL the standard in which all hosts are judged

  • Actually, Johnny cited that as a bad case of laryngitis (ya I can't spell) which left him unable to talk anyways. But whether he had his voice or not, he wouldn't have been able too. The audience obviously wouldn't have let him ;). That, my friends, is a true legend.

  • Of course Johnny said that. He didn't want anyone to feel upset by his walking off stage. But that wasn't the truth.

You can clearly hear Johnny ask Dave "Is this it? Is this what you're looking for?" as he hands him the list, and then as he walked off, he shook Dave's hand and said "Goodnight." as clear as day. Johnny felt bad that he walked off like that but he was just simply overwhelmed by that adoring crowd.

I miss Johnny. God got a good man that day!

    -SAVATS

  • R.I.P. Johnny

  • R.I.P Johnny Carson. You are definitley the founding father of televison! We all love and miss you.

  • I can hardly see the screen thru the tears...

  • R.I.P MR CARSON

  • There will NEVER be another like him!

  • how the fuck do you think i feel, i had to watch her just for this old clip, i'm not sure about the monkeys, i'd rather see her thrust off a cliff myself, feed the monkeys. new campaign. i'm still working on that one. but johnny was a legend, kinda like me in my own mind. was always nice to view his show, & a man of class that seldom gets exceeded in any talk show today. craig ferguson is awesome, did i spell that right fergie? not the bitch twat, the comic i meant. woof rough crowd.

  • Katie Couric is a HATER...bitch...

I would rather watch two monkey's fuck then give her a minute of my time.

  • I could not have said it any better RestiveBob!

  • Did you write this because you support Sarah Palin? If so, I think you should know that she had nothing to do with the McCain/Palin ticket losing.

  • Do you really think it's possible I wrote what I did because I admire Sarah Palin?!

  • Yeah, she did. She's a brain-dead creationist cunt with the mentality of a sack of cement.

  • I think you're confused. I responded because of your verbal attack on Katie Couric. Not because it is Katie Couric, necessarily, but because it's immature and vulgar. Grossly ribald, to say the least. As an English teacher you should be familiar with that word.

  • I'm sure the viewers of YouTube will be sleep better knowing you're on top of matters concerning propriety and chaste language. Now go fuck yourself.

  • Aw, you need a hug. I'm sorry that mom and dad didn't love you as a child. Or, maybe dad loved you too much? You know, in that "special" kind of way.

  • But she help a lot the way she did in that interview, can you tell me what Katie achieve ?

  • I would respond to your question, but I honestly don't know what you typed here. You're 57 and American? Is English your first language?

  • Yes !! why ?,did i said something wrong ? well let say that i hate this lady ,very simple, you know what happen here ? our media doing the big favor to the enemies of this country, based in a free speech, bla, bla, and they take advantage of this, they hate this country they hate the success of America.,i did not vote for Obama, few days later i realize maybe i was wrong but now ,the way he handle this whole situation ,i'm glad i did not vote for him,God Help us ,God Help America.and yes i'm 57

  • It is difficult to understand what you mean from the way that you write, so I choose not to get involved in a discussion that will inevitably end up no where.

However, I feel compelled to write just one thing in response to what it seems you've written, and that is, do you remember how the media tore apart Howard Dean when he yelled during his campaign? There is no liberal media, they are almost entirely lazy talking heads with no substance.

  • i'm totally disagree with you ,there is liberal media in this country, and also hurting this country,i remember Truman dropping the bomb, and over 60 years ,maybe not for you ,but for me this event save this country..

  • Ok, my first suspicion was correct. For a 57 year old American who speaks English, you can barely write a sentence that is literate. I would be surprised if you graduated from high school, yet you have such a great understanding of how the world operates? You are clearly uneducated and I cannot discuss anything substantive with you. Keep watching Fox "news".

  • Well ,the way to react ,you are not well educated also ,have a nice day ,Sr.

  • But I do have a college education. Although, I know that many people such as yourself consider that a detriment. People who are college educated are part of the liberal media agenda, right?

  • please don't put words in my mouth,i never say that, also i believe you need help related to that opinion of your;i said that there is liberal media ,not intentional, helping enemies of this country ,i love educated people ,do you know that when the 9/11 attacks ocurr,a lot of people in comunist countries celebrate the event ? and the media of this countr y never mentioned ,can you explain to me why ?seriously.

  • why stoop to this fools level just quit.

  • I can't more agree with you , i hate this lady

  • Be nice will you? She may have some really nice nipples.

  • I used to come home from high school and watch Johnny on Whom Do You Trust in the afternoon (circa 1963)

Then Every show on the Tonight Show from NY and watched when he moved to the West Coast. I know that every time I watch this tribute, I feel that my life was never the same with no Johnny Carson

He is the definition of a LEGEND

thanks to all who post Carson Clips

  • Anyone hear how Ed McMahon's doing?

  • He's not doing well. Last I read he's in the hospital with pneumonia and other ailments.

  • matt looked like a kid compared to today

  • He was in a class by himself!

  • I remember when this happened, I barely knew who Carson WAS (I was a dumb teenager.)

Now I watch the old shows, and there WAS no one like him.

It's because of him, and Groucho, and Letterman, that I can go home and dream of sitting in a desk like that, having all those laughs and guests and making millions happy-

Or even just, to borrow the phrase Letterman used, be "tucked in at night' by Johnny.

RIP Johnny I know you and Groucho and Jack Benny are sharing some great laughs up there

  • Johnny Carson was an NBC legend.

Matt Lauer and Katie Couric are bush-league hacks compared to this genius.

Carson diid it his way and did it best.

  • good bye mr. carson R I P

    GOD BLESS AND THANK YOU

  • I still cant watch this video without crying.

  • he died 4 years ago R.I.P

  • big J talk show KING R.I.P

  • I cried that day

  • That story isn't true

  • Did you know that Johnny was real nervous about being on the tonight show at first? He tried to turn it down, then became a genius at it.

  • what does the last 30 seconds talking about the weather have to do with this tribute to the legendary Johnny Carson?

In any case, this video made me cry uncontrollably, and I am not sure why. Maybe watching him reminds me of when I was younger, how I used to enjoy watching this with my mother, who is also gone from this Earth. I can't seem to get over my mother's death. I miss her so much...

  • nakedBison69,

Here is a big (((HUG))) for you.

  • aww, thank you! you are the first and only person that has ever hugged me on youTube. trust me, i need such affection sooooo badly...thanks again! you made my day! :-)

  • You're very welcome. And I hope that as time passes, your sadness will be replaced with a smile now and then. We never "get over" the death of our loved ones, and there will be times when we will feel sad and cry, but time does heal, even if only just a little bit. Take care of yourself. ttyl!!

  • :-)

  • my wife and i were at his star with flowers in hollywood after we heard the news. what a loss; nobody on tv today comes close to j.c. merry christmas!

  • merry christmas to everybody

  • Put them all together, Letterman, Leno, O'Brien and you still don't get close to Carson.

  • why is he a prick?

  • leshager is a mean-spirited prick who does not give a crap about the people he has hurt. that is a fact

  • Bette Midler singing to Johnny on his second to last show is a memory I'll never forget. Absolutely stunning and beautiful.

  • thanks for the re-memories. I grew up in NY and used to watch Whom do you Trust in the early 60s and then Tonight show from NY before following him to CA. Never missed a night. Animals, Carnac, Celebrities, Nobody did it better

  • Carson was the last class act on late night TV. It has since descended into 9th grade locker room humor.

Real class is hard to come by.

  • :'(

RIP Johnny, thanks for the memories...

  • Losing Johnny was like losing my father who had passed away the same time three years earlier

  • The Best Ever.

  • I was at a local watering hole when someone came in and mentioned that Johnny had passed away. Everyone in there bacame silent.

  • Bush W years where wrong But johny was great

  • Man I loved Johnny Carson and his show. What a blast. A true legend indeed.

  • what year was that?

  • 2005

  • Very sad day, the KING of talk show is GONE (r.i.p) MR Carson.

  • He was my hero. The reason I am in show business. I cried so much when he died. I laugh and cry watching his clips. I was only 4 when he left The Tonight Show but Johnny is the King forever. We miss you Mr. Carson!!

  • dito!

  • dildo!

  • Man, 2005 was just one of those crazy years, and everything went wrong.

  • For a young "lady" of 16, you have a filthy mouth! Your parents should be supervising you while you are on the Internet. Where are they? Don't give me that adolescent crap that you are old enough to take care of yourself. When you are old enough to take care of yourself, you won't be living at home, and they won't have to pay for your food, clothes, and car insurance. In fact, at 16 why do you have a car? Share the wealth as oBOMBma want to do. Sell the car and donate the money to the ACLU.

  • not starting but he could say BARRACK HUISSANE OBOMBA im not starting i think its great that america has a black president.

  • Be sure to view the video clip that Wayne Newton did as his own tribute to Johnny Carson. Very interesting. I've heard similar stories.

  • TO MKA800: YOU ARE AN ASSHOLE. PERIOD!

  • Maybe so, but you clearly proved you are by this pointless commment.

  • Dear mka800: At least you aren't in denial. Why people like you can't enjoy a video clip without getting political clearly shows that you are a mean spirited democRAT. You need counseling to get the anger monkey off your back.

    Your Fiend,

    Uncle J.

  • I do enjoy this video. I made a comment. I didn't realize I'd walked into a room full of republicans. I am 16: I can't vote and I don't give a shit. I just think it was sad that Bush was in any way involved. Personally I am trying for a last minute run for Dakota and Elle Fanning for pres. and VP.

  • Dear mka800:

You need to realize that most Internet people are RepublICANs. democRATS cannot stand that. This is because most democRATS watch Opera and other nonsense on tv, whereas RepublICANs tend to listen to talk radio and watch CSPAN and other intellectual programs. RepublICANs do not like socialism nor government control. democRATS do. I commend you for being curious about politics, but you need to make up your own mind, and not have liberals (teachers) make it up for you. Regards.

  • Jesus Christ, I comment on a Johnny Carson video and I get a full-scale political education. I don't give a fuck WHO mostly watches youtube or Oprah or CSPAN or any of that. I am completely non-political, unlike you who are obviously lost in what the media told you to get lost in. I made my remark about Bush because, like millions of others on youtube, I wanted to inflect a little humor. You've turned into a fucking issue. I'm sure you're a nice guy, but stop jumping my ass.

  • Sometimes you lose something and it's just a loss. Other times you lose something that's a lot worse, because you know it can never be replaced.

  • When Jay Leno retires, they could just run all of Johnny's shows, commercials and all, we'd all tune in. I just don't know how the Tonight show will go on, especially with Conan O'brien.

  • He was the best. I wish they would bring out full episodes of his show on dvd just so we can watch them all again. Miss you Johnny...

  • God Bless!

  • a true GENTLEMAN

  • Johnny was the best but it was just like classless NBC to feature NBC's Leno and never mention Letterman, who followed Johnny on NBC for 11 years.

  • i remember something bob eubanks said about red skeleton. Red usually said may god bless. Then Bob said we were the blessed ones. Johnny Carson is not the only blessed one. I think every generation has been touched by his laughter. His kind nature. And his wit, perseverance, and love of his job quickly spread to all of us. This is just some of the main reasons why Johnny Carson is the greatest, the best, and the king of all late night for all time. God Bless us all and God Bless Johnny Carson.

  • I cried on this day...guess I just always though he would be there like he always was for me growing up.When he left the show all the class left with him and I stopped watching.

  • Rest in piece Johnny. You were the best.

  • i think you mean, "rest in PEACE" brother. but we all feel it. his leaving the tonight show was the end of an era. and you somehow hoped he'd come back for a bit here or there, but his passing made it undeniably (and gutwrenchingly) final.

  • A standard bearer for what a host should be in television. he will never be matched.

  • i second that

  • What a pro.

    Thanks for everything, Johnny!

  • There will never be another Carson he was the best! Now the man up stairs gets to emjoy Johnny's comedy for all time....Rest In Peace Johnny Carson...when I smile I will always think of you....

  • worst day of my life....

    what a Legend....

  • How about the day your
