i have two cattlemen for mounted shooting love them both i just dont see why people think the 357 better the 45 only has two down sides the price for ammo and the rang its good to
Saying that the 45 Long Colt doesn't exist is like saying that the hot dog doesn't exist. It's a question of etymology. The common use of the term as accepted by the majority makes it an existing term. It's use became so popular that manufacturers began using it on the products, making it a product name change. Claiming that it doesn't exist is pure ignorance. It's like saying we should call Snickers bars Marathon bars. Sorry, the name was changed, no matter how "old school" you think you are.
@chughi Well I believe he loads his own. Usually unless you pul bullets and weigh powder charges and such then you cant know how much powder is in a commercial load.
I have the uberti cattleman hombre in .45 long colt. It has a 4 3/4 inch barrel, walnut grips, the matte finish and the brass backstrap and trigger guard. It shoots just as beautifully as it looks. I got to hand it to uberti for making such nice six shooters.
OOOOPS my mistake my dad-in-law says his rifle is marked 45schofield not short...he also says the "long" was meant to set it apart from the 45schofield which some guys were calling the 45short....He's the gun guy in the family, but take it with a grain of salt.
My Father-in-Law has an antique Lightning rifle that says very clearly on it 45short ??....he says it was 1 out of only 400 built in that caliber, but I think he also told me once that he had fought at Gettysburg...he can get kinda confused at times, but the rifle does say 45short.
Actually, .45 colt and .45 long colt are EXACTLEY the same thing, there is NO real difference. But the guy that said you walk into a gun store askin for .45 colt they hand you ACP has pretty good point. still its personal preference, there is no real diff. and the schoffield smith and wesson WAS a .45 but shorter than the colt. i say, if you spend the money on an ACP your gay when you can have a much better gun, and more power in the regular colt .45.thank you and goodnight.
The 35 grain FFFg Swiss Blackpowder loads average right at 1000 fps from a 7 1/2 inch barrel, using a 255 grain lead bullet. It is a fairly potent load and will penetrate over 8 inches of pine with a round nose bullet. Recoil is pretty stout! The 45 Colt is a direct descendant of the Colt Dragoon C & B revolver service load of 41 grains of powder under a 220 grain conical bullet. The big Dragoons could drop grizzlies and buffalo and the U.S. Army wanted a handgun cartridge just as capable.
There's no such thing as a .45 LONG Colt. It's just .45 Colt. People started saying LONG Colt to differentiate between the Colt and the Schofield .45 Cartridge. The Schofield was a wee bit shorter, so they called the Colt a LONG Colt. Schofield .45 are no longer produced, so stop saying LONG Colt. Call it a .45 Colt.
The term long Colt was to differentiate between that round and the short Colt .45s. Yes, there was a short Colt .45. Not the ACP, and not the Schofield or S&W. Try reading before you spout ignorance.

Modern 3rd Generation Single Action Armys and their US and Italian clones have modern steel frames that can handle a 40 grain load much better than the original iron framed guns of the 1800s.
What type of BP did you use, Goex? I'm just getting into reloading and bought the Uberti stainless "outfitter" 1873 with 5 1/2" in .45lc. I have 250gr bullets and was wondering what BP loads to use, what would be the min and max? 35 gr seems a little heavy. My 3rd Dragoon cap and ball takes 50 though!!

the ONLY downside to this gun, is the price for the ammo.

@MichaelkSimmons That's why you reload. ;)

Do you load your own ammunition or is it store bought?

nice pistol; i've got one on the way, with the "old West" finish.

I love the sound. 35 grains of 3F is a pretty stout load at over 900 feet per second but a lot of fun.

i really like the sound of that gun

I also have a hombre, and love it.

I like the gunfighter with 4 3/4" matte black, and checkered grips!
Gladeator123 2 years ago
me too. the matte finish adds a bit in my opinion. makes it look mean.
telliottmb 2 years ago
yeah what your caliber?
Gladeator123 2 years ago
.45 colt. it was actually a rental. as far as i know, that's the only caliber available.
telliottmb 2 years ago

Gladeator123 2 years ago
on the cattleman? you can get .45LC and you can get it in .357magnum. i believe those are the 2 calibers you can choose from

Listen to that report! Sounds just like a Clint Eastwood move! Those old style revolvers and loads have a very distinct sound don't they.

here we go again.
yes there was a 45 colt short.
yes there was and is 45 colt long.
if you don believe it,you are simply not educated on the subject.(please take up ping-pong)it's less confusing.
dieselmac 3 years ago
You don't know what you're talking about. There is NOT a .45 Colt Short. YOU do some research. Wikipedia, dude.

Hahaha Wikipedia is written by ... anyone that wants to add. It is NOT authoritative.
stonewalljkrantz 3 years ago 6
@stonewalljkrantz, authoritative itself is a word that should be used sparsely. After all it is a social construct and highly subjective at best.

Actually, there is NO suchg thing as the .45 Long Colt.
This incorrect usage came about as a way to distinguish the .45 Colt cartridge from the .45 Schofield cartridge used by the military at the time.
Again, there is NO such thing as a .45 Long Colt cartridge.
The revolver cartridge is called simply ".45 Colt".
And, naturally, the semi-auto "version" is called, what else? .45 ACP.
Tuxster3 3 years ago 2
@Tuxster3 the name 45colt was changed by colt in late 1800s to 45long colt to avoid confuion with scholfield so name is real
skytrax152 1 year ago
@skytrax152 Yes, I know the history of the .45 Colt and the Scholfield cartridges.
In common parlance, the former is called ".45 Colt".
It's a minor quibble for some, but not for me.

Sorry buddy, but I'm pretty sure I saw ".45 LC" on the Uberti catalog. I think they know what caliber their own guns are.

umm correct me if Im wrong but im pretty damn sure it was a .44 schofield
DiVeronica 4 years ago
you walk into a store and ask for .45 colt ammo, and they WILL hand you .45 ACP. SO, people still use the term .45 LC.
Just because it annoys you, people aren't going to stop calling it .45 Long Colt.

I believe the original guns used 36 gr. they initially used 40 gr but it would crack the frame over time. I'm not sure with the modern versions.

Yeah,a friend did a load in 40grn...its brutal to say the least.
