It would be about $1000 more for the engine and then you would probably need a stronger tranny at another $1500 or so. The ammount of work would be about the same. The exhaust would be simpler and less expensive since you would only have to run it from the turbo out. I would estimate about $4000 for an sti swap if you spend wisely.

The Super Beetle is no bigger than a standard Beetle. The engine bays are identical. The only major differences between the two are the front suspensions (MacPhereson struts in the Super and beam-type in the Standard).
It is an EA81 8 valve engine.This engine was chosen over "bigger badder" engines due to it's physical size and simplicity. There is only 1 wire necessary for the car to run, and no computer.
Running way rich. I tuned it and had it running amazing until i threw a bearing in the motor... now i am putting a fuel injected subaru ea81 in it for comperable power and even more reliability and longevity
i have both ea18t and ej20t and have had a few of them. and the ea has lasted a lot longer than the ej. ej non turbos are good but turbos not so good, run big ends. and the ea motors last longer as they dont have the power out put of the ej 20. meny ej20t die after 100.000 kms but alot comes down to how you treat them.
subaru moved on from the ea to the ej when they got into motorsport. the ea engines just couldn't reliably make any power.
the legacy's that set and broke their own world continuous speed records and the winning rally cars all needed the reliable power advancements that the Ej series brought to the table.
there are many ej20g and ej22t engines running well over 200+k km's without problems.
