I actually use tissue paper or cotton buds to blend the shading. Just have to make sure that the shading is darker than you want as rubbing it with a tissue or cotton bud will lighten it.

For all the people asking about the shading, I will actually use my thumb or index finger and smudge the graphite. It makes a perfect even shade and can be smoothly blended. I don't know if he used this technique, but the one I made up looks the same.
