Actually I love this tune from 3.50 min, when the musicianship emerges with a great talent; instead the 1st part is only an experimental number at the synth, almost resembling the "Crimsonian" sound being characterized by a melody and vocalism that I don't like so much. The instrumental of the 2nd half is remarkable! Even though I prefer the original ensemble of UK in the seventies...
3:38 was like a different experience coming out of NIN. Then the Terry Bozzio kicked in. Loved the guitar stretch but then taken back to the NIN imitation. Come on EJ, you got more to give than this. Not saying this is wrong but I dare you to push the buttons without external influence
The Next Step—Music that conveys the end of ego, from one of the biggest egos in Progressive Rock. Maybe Jobson has learned something from the excesses of the past. This isn't "show-off" stuff—at least not by Eddie. It's really a band. I just how hard it must be to do something like this with iTunes being the coin of the realm.
They need to sit down and start solidifying some serious ideas into a major album. This is a great start, though I wish there was more UK showing in it. I guess Eddie is trying out new waters. Still... come on Eddie, I know you want to make a big album, maybe a double CD!
My god...just discovering this band...all of these musicians are SPECTACULAR. I'm a long time guitarist and I am absolutely blown away by Alex Machacek's blistering precise solos. Love this stuff.
it is a shame that the masses will never hear musicians like this. They will sell a billionth less than black eyed peas ,Justin Bieber and too many to name. All hail non commercial schloooock!!!!!!!!!!!!
My friend & I are going to see these guys in Whittier, CA tonight. I can't believe the # of people on Amazon who've dissed their EP--what they hell were they wanting? Because it didn't measure up to THEIR expectations, that makes the music crap? Some people need to let go of the past & move forward with the times. This music is nothing short of astounding.
i was a great fan of this band back then. also KC. wtf should i write? still listening to carrying no cross after all those years. but i think time moved on - the new uk is avishai Cohen among others - which bring jazz and popular musik together in a different way- all the best to ukz
This is just the beginning. I'm sure Eddie has something else in the can. And yes, it might sound like Nine Inch Nails meets King Crimson, yet I think its great. If anything, these guys took over where KC left it. This is the best you'll find out there.
"You all are going to hate me for saying this sounds like Trent Reznor, KC, and a great keyboard and violin player"
Why would anyone hate you for comparing this to great musicians?
"I'm sorry, folks but Fripp is King Crimson."
Why apologize for that? It has zero to do with UKZ.
"isn't the point of being progressive [...]"
No. The point=create music fulfilling to them. Don't be so self-centered as to say that if they dont play what you want, they've "stopped growing". How incredibly naive.
You guys saying this is "dated" reveal that you're just trend worshipers, which is a little sad. If Handel were contemporary, you'd say, "Sorry, Handel, but your writing sounds dated" instead of accepting it for the great music it is. The fact that a style was once more popular before than it is now is *NOT IN ANY WAY* an acceptable critique of a piece of music. Like it, or don't like it, but stop embarrassing yourself by saying you don't like it because it's not a popular style, aka "dated".
I didn't like it... good prog has always had good pop sensibility as well... UK's debut was great not only because it had the hottest players out there at the time, but it also had great songwriting... I don't think I'd sing these lyrics in my car.
Holy shit what have I found?? I just dropped our two year old baby.. There is a god!!! UKZ !!! My heroes hopefully are coming out with a cd. Are they touring???
Great music but sadly the singer does suck. He sounds like the type of singer that gets hired when a member of a famous band goes off to do a solo album. Also, to call this a "super group" is a bit of a stretch....sort of like a "new classic". The drummer however is terrific. Trey is always great. Eddie seems a bit rusty or crusty...I'm not sure which. Hate to say it but this sounds a bit dated right out of the gate.
More like the old King Crimson: Larks Tongues in Aspic mixed with Schizoid Man... and a bit of Nine Inch Nails for the Hellraiser Metal verse... but the Middle-section is prog heaven... and the drummer kicks ass.
its been a long wait indeed, the green album held much promise and was sadly to long in following up.. this ep goes some of the way to redress the balance.. but please, UKZ consider a tour outside america.. with UK , a little King Crimson and perhaps a bit of Zappa, there should be enough material for some european dates..Im in ireland and i would happily go to england to see these guys play...so, what about it?...
That's a bit harsh! Don't knock the singing unless you honestly think you could do better. Then, post it on YouTube and see what kind of comments YOU get!
I didn't say I could do better, I'm just saying the lead singer sucks. Just because somebody says a singer or musician sucks doesn't mean they should have to post a video of them self. I'm entitled to my opinion, which is this singer sucks. I'm not the only one who thinks so either.
Fair enough. But "the singer sucks" is stated as a fact, whereas an opinion might be "I don't like the singer" or "the singer doesn't have the same emotional resonance for me as Wetton did."
Personally, I would prefer this song without vocals at all. I think it would be much more powerful letting the music speak for itself without tacking on some NIN-style lyrical angst.
Sorry, I didn't mean to state it as a fact. Maybe people do like the singer, but I'm not one of them. I agree with you on that, the stand alone music would be fine without the singer.
The days of Holdsworht-UK are long gone. Musicians move on and that is how they grow. In a few years you'll say to yourself, gee, unamacarana was right. You need to grow up son, and by the way: Keep your beautiful poetry to yourself.

Thanks Eddie for pushing the boundaries again and again.
Good prog rock. reminds me of NIN,. This kind of limits arrons incredible vocal abilty compared to EM's head to the ground album. You should see this guy sing live
If you go to eddiejobsondotcom he's building a very cool site, click the discography tab on top and all of the music he has been a part of comes up, you can click on the disc of interest it will give you the album info and link to buy. The first album, it's black, their faces on the front and says UK on an angle on the top right corner
This first album of their's I think is the best progressive art rock album ever made, in my opinion!
Phenomenal is all I can say, like the new direction with elements of UK and even a bit of Alan Holdsworth guitar sound as well. Please consider WNY for a tour date, love to see you guys live.
Cool! When I was 14 my brother brought me to my first concert, it was UK at the Paladium in New York City, 1979. Line up, Eddie Jobson, John Wetton, Terry Bozio, a great first concert!! And, then 15 years later I found a bootleg recording of that show at a flea market in the city.. They had opened up with Alaska, I'll never forget the rumble of the low end bass synthesizers at the beginning.. whole place shook!
Sorry, but after many listenings, I tried but the metal sequences are just not for me. From 3:42 through the end of Eddie's violin solo the bass line is a sublime frame of reference for the rest of the goings on...a truly remarkable soundscape. Now go bottle that you fine group of musicians...
give this several listens and it gets better each time, reminds me of other innovative progressive bands, it shows that they're on to something, mix great musicianship and a message, Eddie could really score with this, especially if he continues putting substance in there , like in middle portion of this one
I was hoping for a little more prog and a little (lot) less metal. And, the footage in the video is a bit dated, no? Regardess, good luck to Eddie. You've been out of the scene for too long.
The images of the burning cross against the backdrop of a nuclear reactor, and the image of Christ on the cross is very symbolic of Man killing God and Nature(as symbolized by the cows) The images of fanatical Islam and the marching armies is also very symbolic of the conflict which exists amongst mankind today; which is going to escalate.
As I live in NYC I was lucky enough to see UKZ last week-they did this song, but the real goodies were classic UK:In The Dead Of Night, Caesars Palace Blues, Alaska, The Only Thing She Needs, plus 2 others whose name escapes me as i only have the UK live LP, the 2nd one had Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto come out and join them.Levin played a 4 string bass, Mastelotto got on the drums while Marco Minneman got up and strapped on a guitar and played rhythm.Awesome.
Eddie, on the Green Album you said "the next one's pink". The center span of Radiation is it. The rest of it made me feel uncomfortable...I usually reach for Tool or NIN when I want to feel that way. You're asking listeners to use new synapses and I'm simply resisting...
Good thing world unrest and fear of nuclear holocaust is back. The prog rockers will have something to write about again. Neil Peart might be inspired to write some more stuff.
Just brilliant-the musicanship is awesome and i hope they play Britain soon. I was around to see the first UK band with Jobson, Bruford, Wetton and Holdsworth. More please Eddie.!!
Eddie Jobson Rules!!! Damn it...I hope they play out here in Los Angeles soon!
Check-out The Great Deceivers (a King Crimson tribute) here on youtube. Search for them on Myspace to find-out how to get into their 2-28-09 West LA show for FREE!!!!!
The middle part sounds a little too much like Yes but that's okay, this is a new band trying to find its feet. Overall, this is awesome. Trey is the man, but so are the other dudes I've never heard of dudes in this band. I want more.
damn right the best concert in a long time. It put the yes concert of nov 14,2008 to shame at hammerstein ballroom.
this band should consider it's longevity and hopes of a long form cdin the near future. I was lucky enough to get drums sticks from marco and pat.......now that's what I call a night out.
Hi, I'm 50 y.o. I was and I am a prog fan. It's wonderful to hear Eddy after so many years. It's a powerful music, something between Porcupine Tree and King Crimson, but I thing this kind of music is the future of progressive. Thank you Eddie!
Eddie was understandably nervous at the beginning of the show (being out of public performance for 25 plus years). But he became more at ease once the show started to progress. I loved the "technical glitches" that occurred, especially at the end of the guitarists solo spot. Eddie was to start his solo spot only to find out the guitarists loop was still going (Eddie called him up to the stage to turn his rig off, then the audience started to call him too!) It all made the event more real.
To me, this is a logical follow-up to the last King Crimson masterpiece "The Power To Believe", released almost 6 years ago. With that 2003 album, I thought KC reached a crowing achievement, and I never thought this could be surpassed.
Well, apparently, UKZ took the vacant place and goes even further, developping the music that KC created in its last albums. And this is a compliment !
The "Radiation" EP is really great and I recomment it.
Gunn on stick and Minnemann on drums brought the highlight for me. I just compare all this stuff to Porcupine Tree and nobody touches Wilson for bringing it all together on the edge, no disrespect to Jobson.
having said that i don't think i understood most of what was being played. I wanted to mention trey gunn ripped it up too. he seemed to loom like Lord Humongous. very nice. perhaps it was just a motion to raise the bar to where these guys can play in the highest state of progressive music.
well it seemed that the general concensus was that it was by slim chance people heard of the show. people were one conversation away from having not heard of the it. you can't really gauge public appeal by such ephemeral methods. people felt lucky to having been there. 'prog event of the year' is what's said. i'lll be frank. i was a bit disappointed. there didn't seem to be enough key boards. i expected more. machacek and minnemann displayed their 'imits'. then again i could wrong here.
it seemed to me Eddie prefered the possition of 'overseer' rather than exhabistionist which is the context i'm used to seeing him in. So this offset my expectations.
Yeah, it was the best thing going on in Manhattan last night, but at $61.50 for the cheapest seat on a bitter cold night, it's no wonder that the place was 1/3 capacity. Great drummer. It had moments of brilliance and moments that dragged. Great musicians, good show.
I show the Town Hall show -- best concert in NYC last night for sure -- and the house was half full -- insane - these guys are a much needed shot in the arm for serious music -- somebody -- please -- give this incredible band a place to play! Isn't there room on the music scene for actual musicians who can actually play? Eddie is amazing!
"damn right" the best thing happenning in progressive rock, this band does not full around....all guns blazing, last time I saw eddie was with the original band in 1978, and then again in '79 at the palladium nyc 14th st. all the songs were on the top performance level that these guys played.....oh yeah....by the way we also ended up getting drums sticks from Pat and marco.....can't get better than this!!!!!
What an incredible show!!!!!! It was surely the highlight of the century for me! Unbelievably amazing!!!! All the players were beyond outstanding. It was such an incredible treat to see Eddie on stage again.
WOW! WOW! WOW! This is rock music at its best. Inventive, improvisational, bigger than life (with a smidgeon of seemingly Martin Barre-like guitar thrown in for good measure) music and lyrics. An absolutely astounding, but quite likely unintentional, mix of Tool and NIN. This music pushes the envelope light years beyond the current stale, homoginized, pop-culture cloned, crap that we have been forced to endure for some time now. Can't wait till the album comes out.
i've listened to the song quite a number of times. with each listen I pick out more. I see how the vocalist was picked. John Wetton is great. Bassist and vocalist. i assume John had the great part in the basic structure. (probobly 50/50 with Jobson.) Lippert does a good take on the wetton vocals. This song is not in that aspect. That daring expression that wetton did so brilliantly is what people might be critical of. Stay tuned. i'm sure we're in for some suprises.
Hey Eddie, I read through the comments and I see what you were talking about on Reynolds. I'd have to hear the whole album before commenting, but I'm not sure this particular song is what many would call 'prog' , so that may be setting them off on the wrong foot. Who cares. Glad to see you back in the game.
i agree ....king crimson meets U.K.

Can anybody please recommend an album to get me started?

If you go to eddiejobsondotcom he's building a very cool site, click the discography tab on top and all of the music he has been a part of comes up, you can click on the disc of interest it will give you the album info and link to buy. The first album, it's black, their faces on the front and says UK on an angle on the top right corner
This first album of their's I think is the best progressive art rock album ever made, in my opinion!
Cheers

Cheers!

You get lyrics like diving boards and a pyramid with no point. Yes, okay, anything but the point, please, not the point.
I don't know ... love the violin work, though.

Sorry, but after many listenings, I tried but the metal sequences are just not for me. From 3:42 through the end of Eddie's violin solo the bass line is a sublime frame of reference for the rest of the goings on...a truly remarkable soundscape. Now go bottle that you fine group of musicians...
nextonespink 3 years ago
give this several listens and it gets better each time, reminds me of other innovative progressive bands, it shows that they're on to something, mix great musicianship and a message, Eddie could really score with this, especially if he continues putting substance in there , like in middle portion of this one

I actually like the industrial sound and metal influence. Great work!

You're asking listeners to use new synapses and I'm simply resisting...

not bad but UK were much, much, much better!!!!

Good thing world unrest and fear of nuclear holocaust is back. The prog rockers will have something to write about again. Neil Peart might be inspired to write some more stuff.

The middle part sounds a little too much like Yes but that's okay, this is a new band trying to find its feet. Overall, this is awesome. Trey is the man, but so are the other dudes I've never heard of dudes in this band. I want more.
glockdoc 3 years ago
damn right the best concert in a long time.

Caesars Palace Blues was amazing and Sahara of Snow was one big surprise.
I hope last Saturday wasnt just a one city world tour. They should play again soon.

I just compare all this stuff to Porcupine Tree and nobody touches Wilson for bringing it all together on the edge, no disrespect to Jobson.
hockeyrocker 3 years ago
having said that i don't think i understood most of what was being played. I wanted to mention trey gunn ripped it up too. he seemed to loom like Lord Humongous. very nice. perhaps it was just a motion to raise the bar to where these guys can play in the highest state of progressive music.
nVei06 3 years ago
well it seemed that the general concensus was that it was by slim chance people heard of the show. people were one conversation away from having not heard of the it. you can't really gauge public appeal by such ephemeral methods. people felt lucky to having been there. 'prog event of the year' is what's said. i'lll be frank. i was a bit disappointed. there didn't seem to be enough key boards. i expected more. machacek and minnemann displayed their 'imits'. then again i could wrong here.
nVei06 3 years ago
it seemed to me Eddie prefered the possition of 'overseer' rather than exhabistionist which is the context i'm used to seeing him in. So this offset my expectations.

I never thought I would get to hear "Alaska" live, ever in my life. That show was like a Make-a-Wish Foundation for me.

Yeah, it was the best thing going on in Manhattan last night, but at $61.50 for the cheapest seat on a bitter cold night, it's no wonder that the place was 1/3 capacity. Great drummer. It had moments of brilliance and moments that dragged. Great musicians, good show.

Indeed It was an amazing show. What a surprise to hear "sahara of snow part 2". Hpe to see them again.
All the best Eddie!!!

I show the Town Hall show -- best concert in NYC last night for sure -- and the house was half full -- insane - these guys are a much needed shot in the arm for serious music -- somebody -- please -- give this incredible band a place to play! Isn't there room on the music scene for actual musicians who can actually play? Eddie is amazing!
tvinmyskull 3 years ago
"damn right" the best thing happenning in progressive rock, this band does not full around....all guns blazing, last time I saw eddie was with the original band in 1978, and then again in '79 at the palladium nyc 14th st. all the songs were on the top performance level that these guys played.....oh yeah....by the way we also ended up getting drums sticks from Pat and marco.....can't get better than this!!!!!

WOW! WOW!
