What a beautiful song about love...thank you so much for this english translation...it is amazing...wonderful...and wonderful....many greetings from my heart to you, dear friend...elke
What a beautiful song about love and sacrifice. It gives hope to lost/separated lovers who cannot be with one another. "God reunites those who love each other." Enough to move to heart to tears and sadness yet give us precious hope and unbelievable joy.
Édith Piaf wrote this song for her lover, Marcel Cerdan, a boxer.. whom died in a plane crash. (Hence the "In the sky, no more problems... God reunites those who love each other.") She once said something like 'He died in the heavens, so he must still be there.' So this song is for him.
I'm crying! Thank you Anna.....I know what this means. Love is the most beautiful gift we could give or receive! I believe Edith Piaf wrote it, but I am familiar with Vera Lynn's version, "If you Love Me".
This is fantastic! Oh, I'm so happy! I've been trying to learn this song (I'm a very poor French student) but I like to have an idea of why the song is so beautiful, and now I know. The pictures with the translation will really help me remember the song in French. =) Merci for uploading it!
The English translation in the video faithfully translates the French lyrics. The one to which you allude is a more poetic one with its necessary poetic license and is different from the French original.
The translation is a literal translation of the French words and is a faithful one at that. The translation mentioned below is a poetic one, and necessarily lends itself to poetic license.
Did you just totally make up those lyrics? Where did you get them?? It starts out "If the sky should fall into the sea and the stars fade all around me of the time that we have know dear I will sing a hymn to love We have lived and regained we two alone in a world that seemed our very own with its memory ever grateful Just for you, i'll sing a hymn to love" And so on. It's so much cuter with the real words... But very very very great job on the video! It's very cute!
Well, there are many ways to translate the lyrics; can't be exactly the same, of course. I found the translation online, but I also have been taking French classes for many years now and the translation fits pretty well.... Where did you get those ^(above) lyrics? ... Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad you liked my video :]
I just bought the "Closer" album sheet music , and at the beginning of the book are all the lyrics for the different language songs. So those are the "official" lyrics, but it doesn't matter that much, eh?
Hmm, that's strange. Because the lyrics on the Closer CD album have those lyrics (in my video). I don't know why they would be different for the sheet music. (man, I want to get Closer sheet music so badly lol). So, yeah... But the lyrics in the Closer album cover booklet/ my video are pretty correct. (Seeing as I know French) Hope that's cleared up.
PS. the original is done by/ lyrics written by Edith Piaf. About her love, who was killed in a plane accident. (the lyrics are about him)
I know where they got those lyrics (in the sheet music!)*Revelation lol* I searched it up, online. The song "Hymne à l'amour" was 'changed' in 1959 by a woman named Shirley Bassey, into "If you love me (Really Love Me)". It was also recorded by many other artists, such as Brenda Lee. So, many people have changed up this song; made their own versions. But the lyrics in the video are THE direct (as direct as you can get with translating between languages) lyrics to the original song by Edith Piaf.
