to add something with all these fav comment- soumitra was an great actor.no doubt but even satyajit ray also admitted the thing that uttam kumar was an HERO indeed. thats why he made the film "nayak" only with uttam kumar... and surprisingly soumitra admitted that he wont be able to do that role... because the glamour required was only with uttam kumar... soumitra was appropriate for the intellectual role.. but UTTAM KUMAR was a true hero... you really cant compare between Einstein and Leonardo

@curiben indeed he(Soumitra) is that's why called him "great man".....I am also a huge fan of his. I think it is point less to compare the geniuses of the bengali cinema. becuase both of them are representatives of our culture.

All appreciations about Soumitra is very true indeed. but it as well remind me of an incident once Sharatchandra Chatterjee was asked why he is so easily understandable by the common people and why Rabi Thakur is so ambiguous....Sharatchandra replied "I write for the mass and Rabi Thakur writes for people like me(Sharatchanra)". Similarly Soumitra in an interview said "Anekei Soumitra fan hole ki hobe.... Soumitra nije kintu Uttam Kumar er fan". No doubt great men think alike!

@sanjuktaroy14 My prsonal opinion is dat, though Soumitra did represnt common ppl through his acting,most ppl didn't appreciate him,coz most ppl don't want to face harsh reality.Ppl want to dream of those things which dey won't b abl 2 do or achieve in real life.Uttam Kumar was the man who did those "unachievable" things on screen for the commoners & was applauded.In dis case Uttam not Soumitra represents Sharatchandra,also by opnly sayin he is a fan of Uttam Soumitra showd how big his heart is

Well, you're right. But you know there is a saying in english "out of sight, out of mind". I think that's what happened here with Manna De. Also the picturization of the song, the mood that it creates in our mind, the chemistry between soumitra and tanuja, makes us forget everything else.

Compared to his contemporary leading actors, I think he is the finest one. To me he is not a "HERO" like Uttam Kumar was but he is the protagonist. Uttam Kumar preferred glamour based roles whereas Soumitra preferred everyday life roles close to common man. He experimented a lot with himself while Uttam Kumar was fixed on stereotypical romantic roles. I can't say soumitra was a "Hero"; the heartthrob to young girls, but he is certainly the better actor compared to Uttam Kumar.
