@REMchout this song is such an underdog! rejected for chronic town AND murmur. it's hard to pinpoint why, exactly. my guess is that in light of their material at the time in seems a touch more naive/simplistic. and i think it's more of a reckoning style tune, but by that time they were sick of it.
Yeah, between this song and it's musical counterpart (as Peter has described elsewhere) Burning Down, you would thing one of them would of made it to a proper album!
I could only imagine being in a college town bar, when this newcomer band named "REM" got onstage, and played this. Not many folks remember this song; thanks to a younger brother of mine (now age 42) he played EVERYTHING REM on LPs/45s, I have had this bouncing around in my head for 30 or so years! Ah, the early years of great bands.....!
If you love this song, you guys should get a copy (or download, nowadays) the album "Dead Letter Office." It's a fantastic collection of songs that were recorded but not put on the first 3-4 albums. Great stuff. Viva REM.
Chronic Town is an excellent album, but I always thought this song was much stronger than anything on there (except Gardening at Night). It is a wonderful song.
This version is faster and more tightly constructed, I'll admit, but I'll always love the DLO version better. The bass on that one is more powerful and prominent. (That's not the only reason why I'll love it better, but...)
Apparently it didn't fit the feel and atmosphere of CT as well as what they put on instead. I like this song, but I can see why they made that decision.I forget what it was apparently bumped for. Stumble, I think.
I think it sounds too echo-y and where's the bass? Too soft and tin. And like the original take on Wolves, it probably would've been better at a slower pace, allowing for more feel and mood.
"christine indigo without...so preceeded one too much"

This is a neat little outtake. I still like the DLO version better...it's more twangy and fits in nicely with "Pale Blue Eyes" and "Femme Fatale".

@ailahusky in the liner notes to the IRS Years, Mike Mills said Stipe didn't like the lyrics, so it got dropped from Chronic Town. Too bad.

Thanks. The last version I heard was from It's Pittsburgh and it's Raining. This version is higher quality.
