  • girl version of honey badger voice

  • The voice over lady sound like a jew.

  • Outer space has the odor and taste of almonds.

  • Wow this girl's voice is annoying. The way she drags her sentences makes her sound like a typical stupid and superficial girl.

  • gosh...Bbiblethumpers as usual... man, these people should be banned from this kind of videos until they learn something about Astronomy and phisichs... just the basics... but I guess that is ask for too much...

  • Aren't those gamma ray bursts called quasars?

  • @amazinero pretty sure yeah just like the first one in our universe that occured to began composing everything right after the big bang

  • i think space is is just space

  • jkt ive seen this so called evidence and its fake and metrosexual. it might even be femenistic.

there is not a singel evidence for blackholes, if your talking about unexplained gravity in the center of galaxys, then how does this prove a blackhole in the center, when this is the brightest part of a galxy? it dont make sense at all.

even the thoery of universal expantion is bullshit

  • @FubarAndBoner Stupid dipshit lmao, jfgi ypos.

  • oh yeah, i'm really sure the black hole is thinking "i've got earth in my sight, lets shoot out some rays".

  • tottal bull shit, she says in the start that super massive black holes can be found in the center of galaxys, yet its just a thoery without any evidence.

  • @FubarAndBoner there is evidence tons of it google it sry but tht was a n00b statement

  • lol you u1tra n00b, the prooof your talking about, is that they dont know wtf they watching, and they seem to think that the gravity is to strong for what they are seeing? lol it dont even make sense talking about it. Find me 1 singel proof of a blackho (JK) blackhole, and il give you a million

  • @FubarAndBoner wow how ignorant no offense but did u even bother to google "black hole evidence" thers tons of it if u did tht u wouldn't hav bothered wit tht comment instead all of us could hav been discussing instead of arguing now of u want 2 continue argueing wit out even bothering 2 google the evidence then theres no hope gud day

  • As previously said, the answer to the question "Is there empty space and what does it mean?" is not easy. If you look up close, really really close, there exists fluctuations in the energy of a specific area of "empty space".

  • If space was completely empty, would there be gravity?

  • no. gravity is an effect of mass.

empty space = no mass = no gravity

  • what if i had matter - empty space - matter, wouldn't the gravity force have to travel through the empty space?

  • you got it all wrong.

whenever there is going to be matter, its going to have mass, cuz all matter has mass. and every mass has its own gravity, even you have force of gravity in you sice yu are matter and you have mass. and you exert a force of pull on the other masses, but its so negligible that you dun feel it.

Now gravity is felt between two masses, eg moon and earth. Earth is a mass and moon is a mass, both have a pull between them which is called gravity.

  • And just in very simple terms, if your are going to have matter, then it isnt empty space anymore.

Empty space means that there is absolutely nothing there, not even the tiniest electron exists.

If NOTHING exists then there is going to be no gavity. EVEN if the tiniest particles is going to exists it will have grvity

  • ah, thanks, i see what you're getting it.

  • Dude, that would be a nuts weapon.

  • Space is actually made of toxic chemicals put there by the government.

  • @ELIAXTRO

Empty space does not exist within the universe. We call it empty, but in reality, it does have some particles.

  • Source?

  • @iLikeDirtySpoons if empty space does not exist, what exactly is between the particles?

  • I just realized that the reason I first commented on this video is the title "What space is made of."

And after three weeks.. I've still not changed my mind.

Space is not "made of" Gamma Rays or Matter that is spit out by a Black Hole.

Space is OCCUPIED by those things, not "made of" those things.

    Good Grief

  • Empty Space contains absolutely nothing .. because of the very definition of the phrase "Empty Space." It has nothing to do with my perception.

If Empty Space doesn't exist .. that surely doesn't mean that it does contain something .. does it?

  • Didn't I say, "You're right .. Space is not empty" ?

When I started leaving comments here . it wasn't about whether Space is empty or full, rather about whether or not Space is something or nothing.

  • @ ELIAXTRO: well said....

@ qipowie: don't worry we know about dark matter and energy... and yes we agree space is "something" rather than "nothing", but i'd rather explaining that even to a layperson!

  • It's very much alright if you disagree with what I've said. There have been many opinions about this throughout history, and I've only been giving my own opinion.

  • "Nothing is a concept that describes the absence of anything at all." - Wikipedia

  • good.... so the vacuum of space is still something right? it's not nothing because "the absence of anything at all" does not fully apply for it!

  • I'm glad you said that.

  • Space, as you say, is not empty; but whether completely filled or completely empty .. Space is Space .. and is nothing.

    EMPTY Space contains absolutely nothing.

But if you fill that Space with the densest material known to man, it is still Space.

The confusing way of saying it is like this: "Nothing doesn't become Something just because you put Something in it."

And there is a good reason why we have a "Space-Bar."

    ( ) <-- what's inside?

  • how can people say that something is made of nothing? if something IS that something, then it's NOT nothing...

plus no human alive has ever experienced truly nothing (total emptiness)... because "nothingness" cannot be seen or heard or felt in any way.. what people are trying to say here is that empty space cannot be seen or heard(sound cant travel there).. but because there are forces of nature (like gravity) or gas, or rays that cannot be concieved but travel through it, then it IS something!

  • Thats not particles !

    Thats waves !

  • i dont get it :!

  • Get a new voice over chick!

  • agreeeeeeed

  • @livewiremjk

shut up, i love her voice

she's like all cold and neutral and scientific

  • Space is made of nothing, matter is made of something.

  • @ELIAXTRO space cannot be made of nothing. everything is made of somehting in the 3rd dimension

  • That which takes up space cannot be made of nothing.

  • you sir are an idiot, the third dimension is depth..

you know length by width by depth, time is the 4th just incase you go there too

  • everything is made up of matter

  • Nothing is not Matter... Nothing is only empty Space.

"Outer Space" is not a perfect vacuum, but it's close. This is why I first commented, "Space is made of nothing." Because empty Space contains absolutely nothing.

My understanding is that Space and Matter are seemingly dichotomic; in other words, Space can not be Matter, and Matter can not be Space.

Black & White... and Red all over.

  • perhaps somethings wrong with the ol red shift theory and we really arent that big?perhaps the energy differences time delay are from the inside and out side of a cosmic phenom just like the time it takes a photon to reach the surface of the sun

  • I like the info in these videos and its interesting and all, but, seriously, who decided that this woman was going to narrate? I don't mean to pick on her, but narrating is not her strong suit.

    Mmmmm... muddar.

  • space is made out of muddar?wow thanks russian girl with the annoying voice!

  • it's Madd'R ...it's pronounced Madd'R...OH Go to hell yew son of a bitch!!!

  • Look at all that madder

  • Unfortunately, at this point we're entirely into the realm of theory, we just don't have the data or the brainpower to fathom the universe in its entirety.

  • There's nothing wrong with being in the realm of scientific theory. That's what quantum and relativity are. Remember a scientific theory is different from the everyday use of the word theory. A scientific theory has to have lots of supporting empirical evidence.

  • in context to light in a vacumm no no no...

you see, with your eyes yes, the place we refer to as 'here', this is our frame of referance, please don't make it any more confusing by telling me light isn't affected by anything because its out of context...

  • stupid people read and stick with the human-made-bible,

    while,

smart people learn and explore space

  • How dare you doubt in the tachings of our god Sir Lord von Chuck Norris of Nottingham Christ

  • @Fromzon Do you have ANYTHING in between your ears? LONG before theories of spacetime came into being certain parts of the bible mention that "Yahweh" - yep that's the name of the God of Israel to whom your gonna bow down to one day - LONG before we worked out space might be expanding. .Yahweh said "I STRETCHED OUT the heavens by myself. ." How did some Jewish scribe know that space wasnt just 'nothing' - but was in fact an invisible 'fabric' that could be expanded ie "stretched out". .

  • @yastunt

I bet you weren't there yourself when He said it

    3 options:

    1) Yahweh has lost his voice today

    2) Yahweh has died before today

    3) The man just never existed, and was made up by humans like... you

My rational mind tells me it's number 3.

  • @yastunt

Please stop threatening people with your myths. No one is scared.

Also, no Jewish scribe would assume that everything he could see when he looked up was made of "nothing". Even the deepest philosopher of the time wouldn't have thought of such a thing. When they looked up, they saw what they called "Heaven", not knowing that it is actually nothing up there but a lot of stars.

You can look in the same book, by the way, and find them talking about stars falling to the Earth. How funny.

  • @HeadoftheHydra Em. . .the stars falling to the earth is referring to the language of appearance. .are you really That dumb?! When you say no Jewish scribe would have thought that space was made of 'nothing' - that's your subjective assumption - it's not reality. You're just trying to avoid the issue - how did they know 'space' could be 'stretched'.

  • @yastunt

They didn't. It's figurative because it spans the entire sky. Wow, that was really hard to explain.

And no, the Bible mentions several times stars falling to Earth, and one specifically that falls to Earth and poisons the water.

Don't worry, I already know your reply about how it's a metaphor or something, but your example isn't. I know how you guys work already.

  • @yastunt Dude, you misquoted the bible.

Isaiah 44:24 "This is what the LORD says— your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, who has made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself,

The Earth wasn't spread out and the bible calls the heavens a veil. And heaven is on the other side.

P.S. the quran makes the same sorts of claims but like christians no one noticed untell someone else figured it out for them.

  • @Fromzon

Stupid people are filled with ignorance and stubbornness,

A lot of people (That are Christians) are open to new ideas.

So please, be more.. Or less.. Judgmental.

  • @Fromzon I'm certainly not a christian, but most christians aren't that stupid. They accept those things, and shift their idea of god. Not the human looking god, but the pantheist god, as Spinoza describes.

  • @Fromzon Why I'm a atheist

  • @Fromzon space has nothing to do with anything

  • @Fromzon Who said all catholics did not support study on space?

  • @Fromzon So why can't we do both, explore space and have a God made, not man made, Bible?

  • @kdc43

come on grow up for christs sake

  • @Fromzon I did! For His sakes.

  • @0:49 "but all light should travel at the same speed"

no...they reckon they STOPPED light in the lab, your theory is destroyed annoying voice lady.

  • Nooooo, you can't "stop" electromagnetic waves. It is a fundamental law of nature that all such waves, including light, travels at the same speed speed. This is not just something they measured in a lab experiment, or even several thousand such experiments, but is a result pointed to by our entire understanding of electricity and magnetism. If it were wrong, the computer you used to blurt out your reply wouldn't exist.

  • Obviously she was talking in the context of the speed of light in a vacuum. Of course you can slow down photons by passing them through other media. There is nothing new about that. You're obviously thinking of the experiments where they parsed photons through a bose-einstein condensate.

  • light travels at a constant speed in a vaccum.

light travels at different speeds through different mediums. In a lab it's a different scenario.

also... ALL light particles travel at the same speed. meaning collectively they should be traveling together.

PS: and yes, I agree, the narrator is hella annoying.

  • space is made of jellybeans and marschmellows...

  • Bandgeek, you're ignorant...

you really think science researches stuff like this to simply disprove religion? You think that is the goal of most scientists? If so, then you are deluded. Scientists research into these type s of things because it gives us a better understanding of our universe. Now if that happens to disprove religion more and more, that is NOT the intention. Scientists simply try to seek out knowledge

  • I apologize for my previous statement. It was a little harsh. Previous conflicts wit people attackin my beliefs has given me a small attitude on th subject, and I apologize for it. But I do stand firm in my belief that more people should stop bickerin ovr past issues. it gets out of hand, people get mad on both sides, and tht keeps any progres from happenin. And for the record i am not pointing fingers at any one side, cuz both sides have th people that no one likes that just wanna cause trouble

  • Yes it is true and i don't know is ever anything discovered that can disprove religions except to unbelieving idiots that can not understand nothing more than three feet from their noises.

  • I don't know who sad it but i remember this sentence ''As many answers i understand as much more question i got'' So i don't believe that science ever prove is there something or not. Something realy is and I honestly hope so it is something good for all of us.

  • Since elements are made in stars when gravity forces together sub atomic particles, Do you ever wonder what elements are created by black matter densities? I don't call them holes since they are super dense matter and not actually a hole.

  • The narrator is annoying...

  • how come gamma rays can escape as jets? I thought "nothing can escape a black hole, not even light".

  • search up hawking radiation

  • not all particles fall into a black hole, some come close but are deflected away depending on their incoming trajectory. Due to the dynamics of the physical processes involved, most concentrate near at the poles which result in the aforementioned "jets"

  • Even black holes have a limit to how much they can consume.

  • I don't thin that.

They will be bigger, and then they can eat more. But they won't stop eating!

  • i reckon the gamma rays escape because they have no mass and are therefore not affected by gravity? i might be wrong tho

  • but light is affected by gravity even though it has no mass, so wouldnt gamma radiation act the same way if what you are saying is true? its quite a conundrum... :D

  • how do we know light don't have mass?

  • mabye gamma rays and x-rays can escape because they have a much smaller wavelength for some reason?

  • i know this is an old topic, but ever see one of those devices with the metallic square that spins when you put it next to a light source? Pretty sure they move by the impact of photons...without mass how could they move it? Strange indeed.

  • need stargate universe

  • amen.

  • Fuk, that womans voice is fuk***s annoying... *Shoots her* Head Shot XD

  • so fucking annoying ! :D

  • G@Y SH!T

  • You know, we've probably been to other systems and other planets but since the government always hides thing for retarded reasons then we dont know. maybe they made or discovered a new way of space travel such as warp drive but there too damn secrative with shit.

  • Wonder if always 4 minutes apart, might have stumbled on an instrument that can detect something exotic like gravity waves. Now where is that paris hilton vid I was about to click on.

  • The real question is whats dark matter and anti-matter. because space is a vacum a never ending void not containing anything other than the things we know like planets and stars and elements etc. Actually i think the real question is "What can we compare space to to get a better understanding of what it is"

  • it be awesome to put a rope and a video camera and see what happends xD

  • it'd be destroyed.

  • OH GOD, the LISP!

  • Soo... waht is space made out of then ;o ?

  • i feel claustrophobic when I watched this. :-/

  • Video Title" What space is made of"

Video Description: "Grainy bumps in the fabric of space-time might explain why light from a distant galaxy arrived four minutes later than expected. "

I feel like i was lied to :(

  • So.. What is space made of?

  • what?

  • they need a new narrator

  • omg she sounds like a deaf person who can hear how annoying she sounds

  • it's mean to make a comment about someone's voice like that.

  • To NewScientist:

Please stop using misleading titles. You've done this before.

You guys also tend to leave out one of the Who, What, Where, When and Why (sometimes how). It's just basic journalism.

  • So What is Space Made Of?

  • She said "quantum foam" but did not clarify what that meant. I think what she means is that space is not smooth - just like a coastline is not smooth. If you count all the tiny quantum wiggles in space then the distance from the black hole to us is more than if you don't count them. The low frequency rays ignore the wiggles so reach us before the highest frequency rays that follow every tiny wiggle. At least that's what I assume she is trying to say.

  • god her voice is horrible

  • Annoying voice: yes. I'd still like the clip to be longer though so we get a better explanation of what they're showing us.

Would be nice if they hired someone with a nicer accent to do the voice-overs though...

  • omg this chiks voice is so fucking annoying!!!

  • HOLY SHIT GET OVER IT Lol

  • So... What is space made of ?

  • In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

    Douglas Adams

  • my thoughts exactly

  • k what ?

  • ...including god, I conclude.

  • Get your stupid god shit out of here.

  • /watch?v=kdJK1tfHthc Amazing Video...

  • ????????????????

  • the sound or tone of her voice is irrelevant. I care more about the awesome news, that is, what she is actually talking about.

besides, there's nothing wrong with her narration.

  • Comment removed

  • nine9s' comment strikes a chord with me.

Albert Einstein expressed several times that the more he learned, the more ignorant he believed himself to be.

Tragically, this humility is alien to today's scientific community. We're so impressed with our stone knives and bearskins. If phenomenae cannot be detected/measured by them then the phenomenae doesn't exist.

Baseless hubris is what makes modern materialist science a quasi-religion, and an embarrassment to real intellectuals.

  • "So then please try to slow the time for one second please"

What the hell are you talking about?

  • Nonetheless I wd guess Sandrine's first language is English. I don't hear any particular accent...

  • Low energy and high energy light shd both travel at the same speed since they are both made of the same stuff. This is way beyond me, in fact I'm still choking on the quantum thing, without this as well...

  • man dat bitch gotta bad voice

  • constructive interference anyone?

  • horrible annoying voice

  • I agree, they'd get way much more views if they got rid of her..

  • it is very mono-toned. someone should tell her it's ok to be excited about science.

  • Yea true, they need a new person to do the monologue for this.

  • did god make turbulant quantum foam?

  • my theory : because of those super massive blackholes our galaxy as a whole is turning around itself with the planets and stars so then those create a gravity and they placed around the constants perfectly in a balance since its giving our planet its quantum we can say because of that we are living now but the same energy will consome us eventually... ironic...

  • Religion exists in people's mind and not in reality.'

  • Aint that some shit

  • wow thats crazy

  • voice.. AARRRRRGRGGHGGHGHGHHHHH

  • @southanjuna

This is a fact and you will have to accept it.

'Science is a part of life and what we are TODAY'

  • and why religion is just belief (:

  • Interesting video, shame about the voice.

  • agreed they need a new narrator

  • Amen

  • At the start when she said 'supermassive black hole' I so wanted it to burst out into muse :D I know, I'm childish.

  • lol me and my sister did the same thing hee hee XD

  • i hate the narrators voice its annoying other than that its interesting

  • You'd need the car.

  • Or one good comfy camel

  • Five Hundred Million Light Years away? Not walking distance then?

  • What are you talking about? I walk there every day to do my grocery shopping.

  • Ha ha ha ha

  • Oooo baby don't you know I suffer...

  • Quite like starlight myself.

  • LOL Supermassive black hole. best muse song ever

  • It's oh so quiet...

  • you're a disgrace to mankind by saying "this world will be going down the drain". what science has contributed and you appreciate none of it.

  • "southanjuna

what the hell are you trying to prove.

Man had this knowledge called science and you are trying to change to concept of it.

What bullshit are you implying that the law of physics is wrong.

    Man discovered gravity,

Man invented machines for us to travel in cars and airplanes.

Man help us to communicate from far distances.

Man traveled and make discoveries through science.

so dont make your own shit ideas and say your right and the book is wrong . what a disgrace

  • lol you know, guys like southanjuna are the kind to yell that science is the work of the devil and that god is the only way in life, and when they get sick they turn to science to cure them cuz praying doesn't do shit.

  • When i went to school we read alot of books, they are there to help educate people and expand our minds. How can someone honestly imply that someone who reads physics books is dumb? Thats madness, are you religious or just looking for a good arguement?

  • space is made out of all the bad shit in the universe

  • Great video!

  • 500 MILLION Light years away huh?

I think it's okay if it's 4 minutes off. Just sayin'.

    heh heh

  • that means in one place universe expands and in other it shrinks

or in one place it expands more then the other

how the hell would that make some waves reach us faster?? anybody??
