  • Wow. That blue synth box is how they got the sound on Secret Journey, and later O My God. I always thought that was done on keyboards, but those spacey chords I now credit to Andy. Groundbreaking pop music. Beatles Schmeatles.

  • LOL 9:16 ~ 24 Andy is like!... WTF! LOL

  • they did this sketch in spinal tap didnt they?

  • Does anybody know where he got this footage from?

  • There probably isn't any style that Summers couldn't break into, he is such a pro.

  • Never, ever, EVER pull Andy Summer's Guitar Cable From His Guitar!!!

  • funny he's 10 years older than sting and stewart

  • at 9:25 andys thinking "im gonna throw him over the balcony" LOL

  • @44eelz check out the "andy summers tribute Telecaster" video on youtube its easier than trying to explain, Fender Custom Shop have made a replica and its a tad more complicated than a standard Telecaster

  • Always thought Jools Holland was a patronising Knobhead, he makes it blatantly obvious he's not impressed by the use of effects pedals, meanwhile Andy Summers influenced me right from the start and 30 years on I'm still using the pedals. So fuck you Jools.

  • @SteveBZ69 in peace, couldnt disagree more steve, you clearly know your onions but as a newbie to the guitar I feel that Jools is basically approaching this from a "pedals for dummies" perspective and gets Andy to unpack his genius for us mere mortals to appreciate. I have always loved the police and seeing this clip makes you realise that it was Andy who was the real engine at work in the band.

  • @SteveBZ69 What is it exactly They both say? what's jools saying and what's andy saying at the same time all I can make out is the "If you've got to" :S

  • andy summers is one of the geatest gitarists

  • anyone know what andy uses for OD?

  • The Police are a wonderful band. Andy is also one of the most versitile guitarist playing these days. His solo albums and his work with Robert Fripp(back in the 80's), are outstanding. Thanks for posting.

  • nice shirt

  • The synthesized guitar is what really grabbed my attention in the 80s. My mom used to play guitar and now I play, so I like playing police songs through my toneport gear box.

  • Ghost in the Machine LP - :)

  • Is that a very young Jools Holland interviewing him ?

  • the edge uses delay as a crutch to hide that he is a pretty unimpressive guitar player. take away the effects and andy summers is still a very impressive melodic guitar player. its sad that so many dopes praise the edge while better guitarists like the late james scott or will sergeant go unnoticed. cant forget alot of the edges sound had to do with producers like brian eno.

  • @Bruceholvenstot yeah but hang on... How can you disrespect edge because of that? Isn't it about how you use effects to determine how a song sounds? Because Edge used effects in the ways that he did... It made him a millionaire, and what is wrong with that? I certainly wouldn't mind that :P

  • @tomworshipsthecrue you're right he def does have his own sound and he is actually a pretty nice straight forward guy espeacially for a rock star. i def still think alot of players go unnoticed while flocks still strive to exactly copy the edges sound. thats not his fault tho so sorry if i came down a bit too hard on the guy

  • @Bruceholvenstot Oh yeah i wouldn't disagree... Too many people now don't focus on becoming a guitar player and more becoming a songwriter and using too many effects... Of course its not such a bad thing... But the idea is that you actually play the instrument... I hate pop-punk for that exact reason... They go out and buy a brand new les paul with the mainstream money they recieve, play 3 powerchords and expect to be reveared in the music world... Hell No

  • andy summers is one of my favorite guitar players <3

  • Sting un melodiste, Stewart et andy le coeur de police, des musiciens, c'est eux qui font le son unique de Police

  • Music is not about getting all technical stop it!!! You enjoy the music or you don't it's that simple.

  • the police is far beyond other ordinary musicians..

  • at 9:29ish Jools unplugs andy's guitar to cut him off and says "that's best left to james brown". andy says something about "i can smell your armpits" but what is the dialogue just before that? i'm not british and i can't make out what's being said. did anyone catch this?

  • Comment removed

  • @leconcorde after Jools pulls the jack out he just says, "Can i play a bit more funk? Umm wot? No i wont, its alright. I can smell your armpits!" Probably a little pop at Jools in the baking heat in a suit smelling "funky"

Jools Holland is overstepping the mark slightly probably just young naivety. Dont forget though, us brits have a lot drier sense of humour to the US. That Jools aint done to bad for himself though, hes probably one of the most respected musicians/interviewers in the business!

  • Andy looks like he was holding back cause if it was Sting or Stu that pulled his plug, there would have been a serious throw down. LOL

  • Andy Summers= Master of Chorus

    The Edge= Master of Delay.

How does Andy get his choruses so rich and noticable??? tahnks, Matt.

  • Andy uses the red witch chorus now, but back in the heyday of The Police he used an Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress and a MXR Dyna Comp to get his signature tone.

  • @pob1989 Plus an Echoplex, a Big Muff Pi, and the overdrive of his Fender Telecaster with a switch out of phase for the humbucker.

  • @pob1989 He should have stayed with the Dyna Comp and Mistress!

  • He used an Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress flanger pedal, set for a slow rate and low regeneration ("colour"). That gets that juicy syrupy swirly sound.

The compressor pedal is what makes the sound 'bigger', more present. He explains it in this video.

  • @HiggsFenderU2 Wrong, Andy is the master of flanger and delay, "walking on the moon" or "driven to tears" are good examples.

  • @Antonivs- Andy is a lot more technical than The Edge, and Andy had a great delay on Walking on the Moon, and others, But for Delay, the front man is The Edge, and the same for Andy and Flange/Chorus. You can't compare their styles really.

There both great in their own ways!!!

    Matt.

  • @HiggsFenderU2 Technical as a guitar player or as an effects user? The Edge is much more proficient in the use of delay than Andy Summers. I would agree with Andy Summers being a "better" guitarist than Edge.

  • @muymalmoon

That's actually not so true as the Edge doesn't run his effects someone does that for him.

  • @aranphor Yes, he does run his effects. Just because he doesn't remember where everything is routed doesn't mean he's out of touch with his rig. Check out the videos. Dave Evans spends so much time messing with effects it even drives him nuts. Edge is the most proficient effects user out there.

  • @HiggsFenderU2 , coz it is not a chorus!

he used a flanger pedal to make a chorus effect. Plus he has a compressor & echo unit.

  • @petejt -

Since when did I say he uses just Chorus?

I said the he uses Flange/Chorus. Plus, I've met Andy, and he told me that he uses both Flanger and Chorus in his songs. He also told me, that for Deep, Reverberated sounds, he likes to turn down the Delay Effect Level way down aswell as the tone, then turn the Feedback way up to get a long deep sound. Ofcorse he has and uses Compressor and DELAY.

I can talk about guitar effects all day buddy if you want,

    Matt.

  • It sure looked like Andy was annoyed by this guy interviewing him. He was very pushy and wouldn't let Andy finish sometimes before asking another question.

  • This is another great lesson by Andy Summers, the POLICE. He starts his private interview at his home at the 3:52 POINT. FORWARD THE VIDEO TO THAT POINT.

  • Andy...one of the true greats of guitar!

  • wow, someone who's shorter than Jools Holland!

  • Andy has a very unique sound, one of my favorites...

  • very talented guitar player , no question. Not the grestest - Hendrix! Below is a list of achievements with out Sting.......

  • Very helpfull video,film.. Andy Summers is a verey Big Guitarplayer . Respeckt!!!!

  • LOL at 6:46

andy still got some of that punk influence left in him haha

  • Andy Summers in my opinion is the GREATEST Guitarist of all time.

  • Absolutely. Technical and creative genius!!!

  • like robert fripps guitar sound

  • They both used the Roland GR300.

  • I dunno if anyone's sussed this, but that's Squeeze keyboardist Jools Holland conducting the interview. I recognize his voice.

  • If he is he's a jerk yanking Andy's cable like that. Good thing he put it back before the body guard bounced him off the deck.

  • Impressive rig Andy had at the time, now we know how he bought his guitar sound to life in many Police recordings!!!!!

  • Jools!!

  • Bring on the night

  • I didn't know Sting played Sax too :)!

  • he can play alot of stuff

  • personally i like this tune but everyone has their own opioions. But yeah Andy Summers is better than this

  • The Police were freakin' great, of course.

  • the police really underutilized andy summers. He was better than their tunes would lead you to believe.

  • True re: Stewart's drumming. Sting just didn't want to showcase Andy's guitar skills and that's a shame.

  • Yeah, sting probably wanted people to incorrectly think that it was all him, so andy was underutilized so sting could sell his crappy jazz albums.

  • that's too true! its too bad that he couldn't cut loose on some of the albums!

  • at least we have live albums. he goes nuts on some of those!

  • boring tune. Andy Summers is better than this.

  • Stewart's drumming is just insane on this tune.

  • Stewart's drumming is insane on a lot of tunes. Almost all of them

  • why does andy have holes in his shirt??

  • Andy has holes in his shirt because that was fashionable in the 80's for some reason. I remember kids who bought brand new jeans and cut holes in the knees on purpose.

  • Cuz he's cool. Cuz it was the 80s. Were you there?

  • Because it's the early '80s.

  • Nice Piano playing from Jools Holland, shame about the guitar playing!!!!

  • How old would Andy Summers have been at that time?

I mean he's just such an amazingly versatile guitarist even at that age!

  • Andy Summers was born Dec.31,1942

  • Oh...he's actually a lot older than I thought!

I mean I'm not young (45) and he's only two years younger than my Mum!...LOL!

Still...all of that isn't relevant...he's still a great and interesting guitarist!

  • He's 10 years older than Sting and Stewart

  • No he aint :) He is 6 years older :P Sting is 59 today, and Andy is 65. Cheers ^^

  • sorry to break your bubble mate. Sting was born 1951 , Andy 1942. You do the maths!

Not that it matters, great vid.

  • Andy may have been in the middle of the 30's. :) Sting was about 29 :)

  • Can any one tell me why Summers is ALWAYS wearing that chain around his neck? I don't think I've seen a picture or video of him without it.

  • My three favorite guitar players:

Andy Summers, Angus Young, and Slash

  • i recommend Andy's book "one train later" pretty well written and loads of stories about the band and him..

  • i agree. such a good book =D

  • one of the best Police songs, for me....

  • uno dei piu grandi chitarristi,,,poche note ma buone e tanto tabto buon feeling e sound...yes

  • Holland's a right prick, wud've luv Andy to hav span round n kicked his cunt up

  • ticking baby bing in the labia carriage

  • I LOVE Andy! He's such an awsome guitar player, just the best...

  • Andy from Zoot Money! How he put up with Holland, I'll never know. I'dve chinned him one good.

  • I love watching musicians demonstrate their musical equipment, rather than be an arsehole and keep it hidden.

That journalist was a moron though for pulling out the cable.

  • Jools is WANKER here

  • By all accounts, he was a wanker everywhere. And he should be thankful that he did not interview any gangsta rappers in his career. He'd be six feet under.

  • I know that it's popular in Holland and Belgium. Featured at some jazz/blues festivals as well.

  • That was the climate of early 80s rock journalism really. Jools was a cunt to almost everyone on the Tube. Nice to see Sting putting him in his place.

  • excellent

  • jools holland was acting like a right cunt during this thing

  • Andy was/is an amazing guitarist. Great sense of melody and adventure on the guitar.

  • The opening to "Message In A Bottle" has to be one of the most instantly recognizable melodies in history.

  • I actually think Jools Holland is a little rude in some parts of this video

    yikes!

  • yeah i mean wtf with snatchin the cable out of the guitar ?

thats like snatching someones keys out of their car ...

  • Andy should've knocked him over the deck. What a d-bag.

  • @46lar What he was playing was garbage

  • o my god!!!11 its scary how cute andy is( and muscular)

  • Man Andy kills it in this song, amazing. But I think Omega Man is my favorite on the album even though all the songs are fantastic!

  • Omega man vs Demolition man... PPV jajaja

  • Andy Summers has always been my favorite guitarist. This is a good example of why that is.

  • You and me too. I've decided I'm gonna get a Tele made like his.

  • Really enjoyed this glimpse at Andy's gear, especially, though the questions Hollands put to him sometimes seem dim -- I have a feeling he was trying to draw out things that would appeal to non-musicians, though, so he comes off seeming less intelligent than he probably is/was. I'm sure he knew Coltrane and Coleman were jazz giants, for example, but the following question was put out to get something young listeners could understand.

  • yo he subido el mismo video pero subtitulado al castellano

  • Looks like Andy got attacked by a tiger.

  • stewart copeland rules,fuckin rules,he's a god

  • yea the police are awesome

  • Frankly, I like the beat up models, it acutally looks cool and special. More important, it got the vintage looks!

  • I have this old Strat that I had my friend/tech beat the hell out of and it looks just like those custom shop relic models.

  • i agree. i hate those "New Old Stock" models they put out now. why would you pay someone for the luxury of beating up your axe before you can? when i buy a new guitar, i want it kept as new as possible.

  • Mos def. I'd rather have personal knicks and scratches. It's cooler, and you've got memories to go with.

  • "yeah, I listen to a lot of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman."

    "Oh, what about Jazz?"

  • Ha! yes, Jools took lessons from Annie Nightingale "So Paul Simon, you're telling me you wrote all the songs, not Art Garfunkle??"

  • what about real feeling??... Stewart Copeland

  • Demolition Man from the Ghost In The Machine album. Great song!

  • what song is this

  • I love this video soooooooo much.

    Thank you for sharing us.

  • I actually feel bad about accidentally typing "The Police" with a lower case "P" in the previous message.

I have so Much Respect for each one of them, which is which is why I'm taking the time to write this sentimental message.

Good luck with the world tour!

    Long Live *The Police*

  • Andy is Extremely Talented and Versatile.

The police were all lucky to have each other.

    Btw, Andy is 10 years older than Sting & Stewart;

he was 39 years old when this video was shot, but doesn't look a day over 25!!

  • Yes, I've seen the interview with Stewart where Jools talks to him while behind the kit - in fact, it was on Stewart's web site for awhile. It's really cool. I haven't seen anything with Sting, though. I wonder if one can get the whole thing, with everything Jools did at Air studios...surely there must be a video somewhere other than youtube.

  • Was the Jools Holland part filmed in Montserrat? It sure looks like it.

  • Yes, it was. It was filmed while Police were recording "Ghost in the machine". Jools Holland interviewed Sting, Andy and Stewart. There's also a video on youtube where he interview Stewart. But there's only a small clip of the interview with Sting where he plays Message in a Bottle....

  • Haha, you can hear sting shouting something after Andy played that funkriff on his guitar!

The Police - best band in the world!

  • Thank you for this - I love the middle section where he explains his gear.

  • Andy rules...love his sounds.

  • Summers was and is a great guitarist. I love his eclectic and creative playing. This is cool footage.

  • Amazing band. Summers and Copeland are both extremely underrated.

  • It's all about the arpeggios, baby... ;-)

  • Greatest band of all time, without question.

    Nobody touches The POLICE!

  • Love this guy, loved that band, but I think I might be the only one wishing they wouldn't do this reunion tour.

  • this stuff is priceless - love it. Holland looks like a wet-behind-the-ears drip - even more irritating than he is now.

  • and a very young Jules Holland! Cool.

  • Oh yea dude, definatly, the police rock!

  • Surely one of the best bands ever!

  • wonderful
