Wow. That blue synth box is how they got the sound on Secret Journey, and later O My God. I always thought that was done on keyboards, but those spacey chords I now credit to Andy. Groundbreaking pop music. Beatles Schmeatles.
@44eelz check out the "andy summers tribute Telecaster" video on youtube its easier than trying to explain, Fender Custom Shop have made a replica and its a tad more complicated than a standard Telecaster
Always thought Jools Holland was a patronising Knobhead, he makes it blatantly obvious he's not impressed by the use of effects pedals, meanwhile Andy Summers influenced me right from the start and 30 years on I'm still using the pedals. So fuck you Jools.
@SteveBZ69 in peace, couldnt disagree more steve, you clearly know your onions but as a newbie to the guitar I feel that Jools is basically approaching this from a "pedals for dummies" perspective and gets Andy to unpack his genius for us mere mortals to appreciate. I have always loved the police and seeing this clip makes you realise that it was Andy who was the real engine at work in the band.

@SteveBZ69 What is it exactly They both say? what's jools saying and what's andy saying at the same time all I can make out is the "If you've got to" :S
The Police are a wonderful band. Andy is also one of the most versitile guitarist playing these days. His solo albums and his work with Robert Fripp(back in the 80's), are outstanding. Thanks for posting.
The synthesized guitar is what really grabbed my attention in the 80s. My mom used to play guitar and now I play, so I like playing police songs through my toneport gear box.
the edge uses delay as a crutch to hide that he is a pretty unimpressive guitar player. take away the effects and andy summers is still a very impressive melodic guitar player. its sad that so many dopes praise the edge while better guitarists like the late james scott or will sergeant go unnoticed. cant forget alot of the edges sound had to do with producers like brian eno.
@Bruceholvenstot yeah but hang on... How can you disrespect edge because of that? Isn't it about how you use effects to determine how a song sounds? Because Edge used effects in the ways that he did... It made him a millionaire, and what is wrong with that? I certainly wouldn't mind that :P
@tomworshipsthecrue you're right he def does have his own sound and he is actually a pretty nice straight forward guy espeacially for a rock star. i def still think alot of players go unnoticed while flocks still strive to exactly copy the edges sound. thats not his fault tho so sorry if i came down a bit too hard on the guy
@Bruceholvenstot Oh yeah i wouldn't disagree... Too many people now don't focus on becoming a guitar player and more becoming a songwriter and using too many effects... Of course its not such a bad thing... But the idea is that you actually play the instrument... I hate pop-punk for that exact reason... They go out and buy a brand new les paul with the mainstream money they recieve, play 3 powerchords and expect to be reveared in the music world... Hell No
at 9:29ish Jools unplugs andy's guitar to cut him off and says "that's best left to james brown". andy says something about "i can smell your armpits" but what is the dialogue just before that? i'm not british and i can't make out what's being said. did anyone catch this?
@leconcorde after Jools pulls the jack out he just says, "Can i play a bit more funk? Umm wot? No i wont, its alright. I can smell your armpits!" Probably a little pop at Jools in the baking heat in a suit smelling "funky"
Jools Holland is overstepping the mark slightly probably just young naivety. Dont forget though, us brits have a lot drier sense of humour to the US. That Jools aint done to bad for himself though, hes probably one of the most respected musicians/interviewers in the business!
Andy uses the red witch chorus now, but back in the heyday of The Police he used an Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress and a MXR Dyna Comp to get his signature tone.
He used an Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress flanger pedal, set for a slow rate and low regeneration ("colour"). That gets that juicy syrupy swirly sound.
The compressor pedal is what makes the sound 'bigger', more present. He explains it in this video.
@Antonivs- Andy is a lot more technical than The Edge, and Andy had a great delay on Walking on the Moon, and others, But for Delay, the front man is The Edge, and the same for Andy and Flange/Chorus. You can't compare their styles really.
@HiggsFenderU2 Technical as a guitar player or as an effects user? The Edge is much more proficient in the use of delay than Andy Summers. I would agree with Andy Summers being a "better" guitarist than Edge.
@aranphor Yes, he does run his effects. Just because he doesn't remember where everything is routed doesn't mean he's out of touch with his rig. Check out the videos. Dave Evans spends so much time messing with effects it even drives him nuts. Edge is the most proficient effects user out there.
I said the he uses Flange/Chorus. Plus, I've met Andy, and he told me that he uses both Flanger and Chorus in his songs. He also told me, that for Deep, Reverberated sounds, he likes to turn down the Delay Effect Level way down aswell as the tone, then turn the Feedback way up to get a long deep sound. Ofcorse he has and uses Compressor and DELAY.
I can talk about guitar effects all day buddy if you want,
It sure looked like Andy was annoyed by this guy interviewing him. He was very pushy and wouldn't let Andy finish sometimes before asking another question.
This is another great lesson by Andy Summers, the POLICE. He starts his private interview at his home at the 3:52 POINT. FORWARD THE VIDEO TO THAT POINT.
Andy has holes in his shirt because that was fashionable in the 80's for some reason. I remember kids who bought brand new jeans and cut holes in the knees on purpose.
By all accounts, he was a wanker everywhere. And he should be thankful that he did not interview any gangsta rappers in his career. He'd be six feet under.
That was the climate of early 80s rock journalism really. Jools was a cunt to almost everyone on the Tube. Nice to see Sting putting him in his place.
Really enjoyed this glimpse at Andy's gear, especially, though the questions Hollands put to him sometimes seem dim -- I have a feeling he was trying to draw out things that would appeal to non-musicians, though, so he comes off seeming less intelligent than he probably is/was.
